Cubs chairman: 'It's a little surreal when Donald Trump threatens your mom'

On Monday, Donald Trump warned Chicago Cubs ownership to be "careful" amid financial reports that indicated Marlene Ricketts - whose family owns a 95 percent stake in the club - contributed $3 million to a group publishing ads and videos opposing the controversial Republican presidential candidate.

MLB commissioner Rob Manfred attempted to slough off the remarks, in which Trump said the Ricketts "have a lot to hide," but Tom Ricketts - the Cubs' chairman - wasn't sure what to make of the pointed tweet from the businessman-turned-politician.

"It's a little surreal when Donald Trump threatens your mom," Ricketts told reporters Wednesday. "The fact is, whether it's my mom or my dad on his spending stuff or my sister on marriage equality or my brothers and what they do or what we do with the team, we're pretty much an open book."

Ricketts, who is also the chief executive officer for a prominent investment bank in Chicago, also shrugged off the accusation that his family has "something to hide."

"Look, if we had something to hide, you guys (the Chicago media) would've found it by now, I'm sure," Ricketts said. "I have no idea."

It remains to be seen whether Trump's newfound hostility towards the Ricketts family will affect his popularity in the Chicago area, as the Republican presidential primary for the state of Illinois will be held March 15.
