Fantasy Spotlight: Alexei Ramirez
Throughout the month of March, theScore examines hitters who represent their team's most intriguing fantasy plays. This edition focuses on San Diego Padres shortstop Alexei Ramirez.
2015 in Review: 622 PA, .249/.285/.357, 54 R, 10 HR, 62 RBI, 17 SB
The Good: Relative to his position, the 34-year-old Ramirez had a strong season in terms of counting stats. He also stayed healthy yet again, featuring in 154 games; since 2010, he's played in at least that number of contests each season. He stole 17 bases, though he's been trending downward in that regard since registering 30 steals in 2013.
The Bad: His rate stats have never been all that strong, and both his batting average and OBP fell to career-low levels in 2015. The White Sox opted not to re-sign him, and Ramirez joined the Padres.
Best Comparison: New York Mets SS Asdrubal Cabrera
What's in Store: San Diego ranked 23rd in runs scored in 2015, with primary SS Alexi Amarista (.204 average, .257 OBP in 357 PA) not helping the offensive cause. With Ramirez, Matt Kemp and a hopefully-healthy Wil Myers, the outlook is better, though Ramirez projects to bat sixth in the order.
The White Sox ranked 28th in runs scored, however, and Ramirez still managed to produce a season of counting stats in line with his career norms. Some positive regression would bring his batting average and OBP closer to his career averages of .273 and .310, respectively, though neither marks are much help for fantasy purposes.
Draft Outlook: Ramirez likely won't be drafted in mixed leagues until very late, if at all. He's more likely to be an in-season waiver pickup. He has more value in NL-only leagues, but RBIs and steals look to be the only categories in which he'll provide above-average production.
