Kerr: Warriors want wins record, players have earned say in whether they rest

Though his players haven't shied away from the subject, Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr has largely avoided discussing the team's pursuit of the regular-season wins record his 72-10 Chicago Bulls set 20 years ago.

But on Wednesday night, before the Warriors beat the rival Los Angeles Clippers (again) to improve to 64-7, Kerr was ready to answer questions about chasing 73 wins.

"I think it's a good question now," Kerr told reporters, according to ESPN's Ethan Strauss. "It was a good question then; it just wasn't anything I was interested in addressing, because it was so early.

"But you're right now, we're right there. We're 12 games away; we need to win 10 to set the record. That's pretty enticing."

With the win over the Clippers dropping those remaining roadblocks to 11 and nine, respectively, the Warriors are a step closer to being immortalized as the best regular-season team of all time.

Kerr has talked about needing to stay focused on winning a championship, and thus prioritizing rest down the stretch. Before the Warriors' blockbuster matchup against the San Antonio Spurs on Saturday (which the Spurs won), Kerr said, "if I had any guts at all, I'd sit everybody."

Now, though, Kerr feels compelled to leave those decisions in the hands of his players.

"It's the players who are setting a record," he said Wednesday. "It's not the organization. It's the players who are doing it. So they will absolutely have some say in matters down the stretch in terms of how we approach everything. But again, we could lose the next couple games, and all that's thrown out the window.

"I know they want to get it. So we'll act accordingly. If the players want to go and they're fine physically, we'll probably play them."
