Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton entered the NFL's concussion protocol Sunday after absorbing a high hit from Atlanta Falcons linebacker Deion Jones, the team announced.

Newton exited the game, a 48-33 win for the Falcons, and did not return.

The injury occurred on a two-point convert attempt after the Panthers cut the Falcons' lead to 34-16 early in the fourth quarter. On a quarterback keeper, Newton appeared to try to walk into the end zone when Jones dropped him with a high hit.

Newton still managed to score the convert attempt, but it was his last play in the game.

It's the latest in a series of high hits Newton has taken taken this season, with several coming on national television in the Panthers' season opener against the Denver Broncos.

After that game, Newton's teammates complained that he's not afforded the same protections as other quarterbacks in the league.

The Panthers' Week 5 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will be played next Monday, so Newton will have an extra day to be cleared to play.
