Packers cut All-Pro guard Josh Sitton
The Green Bay Packers cut three-time All-Pro guard Josh Sitton, the club announced Saturday.
Green Bay was reportedly attempting to move Sitton, but presumably wasn't able to find any suitors.
"We want to thank Josh for his contributions during his time in Green Bay. He has been an important part of the success we have enjoyed on the field," general manager Ted Thompson said. "While these decisions are never easy, this was done with a focus on what is best for the team and the growth of the offensive line. We wish Josh and his wife, Kristen, all the best in the future."
While Sitton's play declined somewhat in 2015, he's still among the better guards in the league, and should garner significant attention on the free-agent market.
"I'm sad I will be leaving Green Bay. I am thankful for my time here," Sitton said in a text message to ESPN's Jason Wilde.
"I really don't want to talk, man. I'm thankful to the organization. It's a tough business."
The Packers' decision to move on could be partly motivated by money, as Sitton had a $6.85-million cap hit in 2016, the final year of his contract.
But from an on-field standpoint, it's tough to see the benefit in taking away one of Aaron Rodgers' best protectors just before the season starts.
