Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid said star running back Jamaal Charles recently underwent a procedure on his injured knee to have his meniscus trimmed, which necessitated the move to put him on injured reserve.
Reid would not rule out the possibility that Charles could return later in the year after sitting out the mandatory eight games.
"I haven't even got that far. I can't tell you that," Reid said.
Charles was evaluated by noted orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews this week after swelling developed in his injured knee, prompting the procedure.
Backup running back Spencer Ware has been ruled out of this week's game against the Jacksonville Jaguars with a concussion. Charcandrick West will feature as the lead back.
