Report: NFLPA believes Bucs' Schiano is source of Freeman leak
According to USA TODAY Sports, the NFLPA believes Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Greg Schiano is behind the leak of quarterback Josh Freeman's confidential information.
In correspondence obtained Saturday by USA TODAY Sports, the NFLPA says it has no confidence in the NFL's separate investigation and wants the league to join or support its own investigation.
The NFLPA reportedly contends that it has information that the original breach occurred when Schiano discussed Freeman's participation in the league's substance abuse program with his then-teammates. The union does not have the power to question Schiano or other team officials, hence why it reportedly wants the league to join or support its investigation.
Freeman, who was released by the Bucs on Oct. 3, admitted that he had voluntarily agreed to randomly tested after switching from Adderall to Ritalin for his treatment of ADHD. He also said that he had passed 46 league-administered drug tests over the past 18 months.
Schiano has denied leaking Freeman's information.
USA TODAY Sports reports that in correspondence obtained Saturday, "the union laid out nine cases in which the NFL said it would investigate a breach of confidentiality but never announced discipline, which the league has threatened could be substantial."
One of the nine cases reportedly involves Denver Broncos linebacker Von Miller, whose past drug use appeared in various media reports while the league and union negotiated his six-game suspension.
