NFL, NFLPA officially announce new drug policy, reinstate suspended players

Mark J. Rebilas / USA TODAY Sports

After weeks of intensified discussions, the NFL and NFLPA officially announced a new drug policy Wednesday.

The new policy includes the implementation of HGH testing as well as changes to the discipline and appeal processes for positive PED tests.

The two sides continue to work on changes to the substance abuse policy, but are expected to announce an agreement when reached. However, that point appears to be near, as retroactive adjustments were part of the league's initial release and three players were deemed eligible to return to their teams this week.

Previously suspended players now reinstated are Denver Broncos wide receiver Wes Welker, Dallas Cowboys cornerback Orlando Scandrick and St. Louis Rams wide receiver Stedman Bailey.

Cleveland Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon was not part of the announcement, but the league will likely bring clarity to his situation when the substance abuse policy changes are made official.
