Panthers' Alexander: Latest violation is from many months ago

Dale Zanine-US PRESSWIRE / Reuters

Carolina Panthers defensive end Frank Alexander's latest violation of the NFL's substance abuse policy occurred months ago, according to a statement he released through the NFLPA.

I’m very sorry to the Panthers organization, my teammates, and Panthers fans that my mistakes from many months ago will prevent me from contributing for several more weeks. This discipline arose from a violation that occurred many months ago. Since that violation, I have continued to grow, and I will continue to work hard, as I have been doing, to stay in shape and be a major contributor upon my return. Through God's favor, I will continue to show through my behavior that I have learned some valuable life lessons.

The 2012 fourth-round pick was handed a 10-game suspension on Wednesday mere days after he finished serving a four-game ban for violating the league's substance abuse policy.

Alexander will be eligible to return to the Panthers' active roster on Dec.15.
