Washington Redskins head coach Jay Gruden's decision to bench starting quarterback Robert Griffin III in favor of Colt McCoy heading into Sunday's game against the Indianapolis Colts may have taken the rest of the team by surprise, but at this point, they're at least publicly supporting their coach's decision.

“Anytime you see your starting quarterback (get benched), obviously, you’re just like, ‘Man, that (stinks),’” fullback Darrel Young told CSNWashington's Tarik El-Bashir. “I feel for him. I know what type of guy he is. You always want the best for a guy.”

Still, Young knows that with a disappointing 3-8 record, it was up to Gruden to shake things up in hopes of righting the ship.

“Coach said from Day 1 that he was going to put us in the best situation and do what’s right for the team. And this is what he feels is right for the team. So that’s the direction we’re going,” Young said.

Tight end Niles Paul echoed Young's sentiments, agreeing that Griffin's benching was a surprise while throwing his support behind Gruden's decision to roll with McCoy.

“It was surprising,” Paul said. “I had no control over it, but I know that it’s a business at the end of the day. Coach Gruden is the head coach and whatever decision he makes, we all support. (Gruden) said he wanted put us in the best position to win and he feels like this is a decision he had to make.”

McCoy has appeared in two games this season, completing 36-of-42 passes for 427 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He's also rushed for 19 yards and a touchdown on nine carries.
