Report: Rex Ryan aware of Jets' plan to fire him before season began

The New York Jets are in danger of missing the playoffs for a fourth consecutive season, which has many speculating that head coach Rex Ryan could be on his way out. But according to Mark Cannizzaro of the New York Post, Ryan has been aware of his fate all season long.

Cannizzaro reports that Ryan was told by scouts and coaches from around the NFL during the offseason that Jets general manager John Idzik had been telling people that he planned to replace Ryan after the season.

"Did he think that wasn't going to get back to me?" Ryan told one confidant, according to Cannizzaro.

Ryan has reportedly hinted to those close to him that if the Jets do decide to cut ties with him, he is prepared to go directly to television, which Cannizzaro says is a surprising development considering Ryan's coaching history.

With the Jets sitting at the bottom of the AFC East at 2-9, Ryan's firing would hardly come as a surprise. His comments following Monday's loss to the Buffalo Bills suggest he knows what lies ahead too.

"We're running out of tomorrows," Ryan said Tuesday. "I recognize it and that's a challenge that's in front of me. We've got to get a lot better in a hurry."
