Seahawks, Sherman dominate 49ers in defensive battle

Kyle Terada / USA TODAY Sports

The Seattle Seahawks (8-4) got a huge 19-3 road win in San Francisco Thursday, as the 49ers (7-5) offense was nowhere to be found all evening. The Seahawks are still alive in the NFC West with a Week 16 matchup against the Arizona Cardinals still ahead of them.

The 49ers are now in jeopardy of missing the playoffs, and will have to battle for a wild-card spot. Their offense is in shambles, and though they will face the Seahawks again, as well as the Cardinals, they are trending toward missing the postseason.

Here's what you need to know:

  • The 49ers bungled the end of the first half with missed opportunities they could ill afford. First they fumbled a punt that should have been blocked. Then the clock was severely mismanaged when they had an opportunity to drive for a field goal.
  • Seahawks corner Richard Sherman had two interceptions and seemed to be inside the head of 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who struggled all night, throwing for just 121 yards on 16-of-29 passing.
  • Defense was the name of this game, with the Seahawks holding the 49ers to just 164 yards of total offense.
  • Russell Wilson played well, passing for 236 yards on 15-of-22 passing and a touchdown. Wilson routinely extended plays and drives with his legs, frustrating the 49ers' pass rush.
  • The Seahawks sacked Kaepernick four times on the night and pressured him into ugly throws throughout the game.
  • 49ers receiver Michael Crabtree injured his knee and ribs on the second play of the game but was able to play the rest of the night.
