Mike Pettine: Johnny Manziel 'in a better place' but Browns still need to find a QB
Cleveland Browns head coach Mike Pettine recently visited quarterback Johnny Manziel at a rehab facility and found his quarterback's overall health to be greatly improved, Pettine told reporters at the NFL Scouting Combine on Wednesday.
Nonetheless, Pettine admitted Manziel's status for 2015 remains murky at best and said the Browns will approach free agency and the draft as though they need to find a starting quarterback.
Pettine indicated the Browns are open to re-signing Brian Hoyer, but hinted the team will explore other avenues of acquiring a quarterback. The Browns are reportedly interested in free agent Josh McCown.
The coach kept most details of his visit with Manziel private, but said the Browns are proud of their second-year star for seeking treatment for his substance abuse issues.
"(Manziel is) in a much better place now than when he went in," Pettine said. "He's determined to be better for it."
