Buccaneers' Jameis Winston files counterclaim against sexual assault accuser
Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston filed a counterclaim Friday against the woman who accused him of sexual battery, assault, false imprisonment and inflicting emotional distress after a 2012 incident.
Winston captured the Heisman Trophy and national championship in 2013, posting a 27-1 career record at Florida State. The former collegiate star was selected first overall by the Buccaneers in the 2015 NFL Draft.
In his counterclaim, Winston alleges that his accuser's accusations are "false, defamatory … and have maliciously and impermissibly interfered with Mr. Winston's business and personal relationships." He is counter-suing for damages in excess of $75,000.
Winston's accuser filed her lawsuit against him on April 16 and is a former student at Florida State.
The Buccaneers' quarterback was the subject of three separate investigations. However, the Tallahassee Police Department, Florida State Attorney's office and Florida State-appointed Justice Major B. Harding could not find evidence to arrest, indict or suspend him from the university.
