Ray McDonald charged with felony false imprisonment in domestic violence case
Free-agent defensive lineman Ray McDonald will be arraigned Thursday afternoon in Santa Clara County, Calif., on multiple charges stemming from a May 25 domestic violence incident.
McDonald is charged with felony false imprisonment, misdemeanor domestic violence, child endangerment, and violating a court order that he stay away from the victim. If convicted, he could be sentenced to up to three years in prison.
"It is unconscionable and illegal for any woman to be trapped, whether it be behind a dining room table or in a relationship filled with fear and violence,” Deputy District Attorney James Demertzis said in a statement, according to Lisa Fernandez of NBC Bay Area.
While a member of the Chicago Bears, McDonald was arrested in late May after allegedly assaulting his then-fiancee as she held their 2-month-old baby.
Having posted bail, McDonald was arrested again on May 27 for violating the terms of his restraining order.
The Bears parted ways with McDonald in the hours following his initial arrest, and he remains an unsigned free agent.
McDonald was released by the San Francisco 49ers in December 2014 after being the subject of multiple police investigations over several months.
