Lions engaging in contract talks with DeAndre Levy, Haloti Ngata
Detroit Lions general manager Martin Mayhew has opened contract talks with the agents of both defensive tackle Haloti Ngata and linebacker DeAndre Levy, according to Tim Twentyman of the team's official website.
Both veterans are entering the final year of their deals, with Ngata set to make $8.5 million in 2015 and Levy on a team friendly $3.5 million contract.
When the talks are cut off is still up in the air as the Lions get set to enter the season with a revamped defense.
"We're in discussion with DeAndre at this time. That's about all I can say about that at this time," Mayhew said Tuesday, according to Kyle Meike of Mlive.com. "I don't know (whether we'll keep talking) for sure. I think we'll decide it as we go. If we continue to make progress, then we'll talk."
A long-term extension for Levy is likely the biggest priority for the Lions as the former third-round pick has become a cornerstone at linebacker and Mayhew's most successful draft pick.
For Ngata, the team may take a wait-and-see approach, with the big veteran in his first year with the team and entering the twilight of his career. A long-term deal may have to wait until after the season when Ngata becomes a free agent.
