The New York Giants' head coaching search could be a lengthy one.

The Giants, who parted ways with Tom Coughlin after 12 seasons, are searching for a "proven" head coach to replace him, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports.

Rapoport notes that given the climate of candidates in the NFL right now, the Giants' desire for a proven coach "really limits their options."

Giants coordinators Ben McAdoo and Steve Spagnuolo, former Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Adam Gase, Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Teryl Austin, and Jacksonville Jaguars assistant head coach Doug Marrone have all interviewed for the job so far.

Gase was hired as head coach of the Miami Dolphins on Saturday, which puts him out of the running. Spagnuolo posted a 10-38 record during his three-year tenure with the St. Louis Rams, while Marrone's decision to opt out of his contract with the Buffalo Bills after two seasons was perceived by some as him quitting on the team.

The Giants have also reportedly scheduled an interview with former Atlanta Falcons head coach Mike Smith, who fits the bill of what they're looking for. He posted a 66-46 record with the Falcons and advanced to the playoffs in four of his seven seasons.
