Overview
Ehlers played youth hockey in Switzerland before debuting with the senior EHC Biel team during the 2012-13 season, scoring one goal and adding one assist in 11 games. Ehlers was with the team during the NHL lockout, giving him the opportunity to practice with displaced stars Tyler Seguin and Patrick Kane.
After being selected sixth overall in the QMJHL import draft, Ehlers exploded as a member of the Halifax Mooseheads. He racked up 49 goals and 55 assists in 63 regular-season games, added 11 goals and 17 assists in 16 playoff games and was named the CHL's rookie of the year.
EliteProspects.com describes him as "an explosive player who can beat even the quickest defensemen wide with his speed." He possesses incredible skill, making plays with lightning speed while also willing to get himself to the front of the net to create scoring opportunities.
He's even drawn comparisons to Halifax teammate Jonathan Drouin, who was drafted second overall in 2013.
Based on his final ranking, Ehlers appears to be a borderline lottery pick, with the Washington Capitals slotted to pick in that spot. It's not hard to imagine teams like the Phoenix Coyotes or Nashville Predators scooping him up one or two picks earlier.

Scouts are saying
Dan Marr, NHL Director of Scouting
The big question was how he would handle the durability of playing in the [QMJHL] and playing more games. But he's proven to be a skilled forward who can work some magic with Drouin. He's got that quickness where he can separate from a check and get to the net. He's got soft hands and passes with authority, is a clever playmaker and very unselfish. Most teams are viewing him as a first-round candidate."
Craig Button, TSN
Nikolaj is a dynamic player who - while not being really big - plays big and is elusive. A very quick player, he is able to see opportunities and take advantage. He is equally adept at finishing plays as he is making them.
