Seven players who you forgot played for both the Kings and Rangers
In addition to sharing the stage for the 2013-14 NHL Stanley Cup Final, the New York Rangers and Los Angeles Kings have shared many players of the years. We will be reminded on a nightly basis how the Rangers gave up on Marian Gaborik and shipped him to Columbus, and how he's become the Kings most dangerous finisher not named Justin Williams. Brian Boyle, too, shares ties to both clubs.
While it's usually guys of the superstar variety, like Wayne Gretzky, Marcel Dionne, and Luc Robitaille who come to mind when we think of players who have played for both the Rangers and the Kings, there are several other notable NHLers past and present who have donned both jerseys, albeit for considerably a shorter tenure on one side or the other.
Here are seven players who you may have forgot played in both New York with the Rangers and Los Angeles.
Jari Kurri
The first Finnish player to be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, Jari Kurri, returned from a mini exile in Italy to join the Los Angeles Kings for four plus seasons beginning in 1991-92. He played 14 regular season games and 11 playoff games with the Rangers in 1995-96 following a trade deadline exchange.
Anson Carter
The 2003-04 NHL campaign was a move-filled affair for Anson Carter. The Rangers pulled off a heist in midway through the season by trading Carter to Washington for Jaromir Jagr in one-for-one deal for the ages. The Capitals turned around and sent Carter to Los Angeles in March of the same season for Jared Aulin. Carter played a total of 54 games for the Rangers and 15 for the Kings.
Russ Courtnall
Russ Courtnall was one of the fastest skaters the game ever saw, but he was never as quick as his own 29 total game tenure in New York. The former 7th overall pick capped his career with two seasons in Los Angeles after serving as a rental for the Rangers in 1997.
Ray Ferraro
Ray Ferraro signed with the New York Rangers in the summer of 1995, but he was shipped to the fading Gretzky Kings in the Kurri deal at the trade deadline in March of the 1995-96 season. He played three more full seasons with the Kings before signing with Atlanta in 1999.
Olli Jokinen
The Kings selected Olli Jokinen third overall behind Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau in 1997, but he played just 74 games over two seasons with Los Angeles prior to finding himself in the middle of blockbuster draft day trade in 1999 with the New York Islanders. Long Island would be one of several brief stops in Jokinen's career, including a 26 game dance with the Rangers at the end of the 2009-10 campaign.
Marty McSorley
Marty McSorley played eight seasons with the Kings, with one abrupt stop in Pittsburgh breaking his L.A. days into two terms. He was another one of the veteran pieces along with Shane Churla that the Rangers brought in through the swap involving Kurri and Ferraro. He played all of nine regular season and four postseason games with the Rangers. Images from McSorley's time in New York are scarce, so you get what we have here, which is the airbrush treatment.
Mattias Norstrom
The Rangers shortsighted acquisition of Kurri and McSorley for a playoff run in 1996 cost them future two-time NHL All-Star Mattias Norstrom. Norstrom served as the Kings captain for five seasons in the early-to-mid 2000s. Although he spent parts of three seasons up with the Rangers, Norstrom played in just 43 games.
