Kings take 2-0 series lead in Stanley Cup Final with double-overtime win
The New York Rangers deployed an entirely different strategy in Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final, but the Los Angeles Kings weren't about to be defeated by their own brand.
Dustin Brown scored the double-overtime winner and Jonathan Quick turned aside 34 shots as the Kings held serve in Los Angeles, building a 2-0 series lead with an exhausting 5-4 triumph.
It was the second straight game in which Los Angeles failed to seize the lead until overtime, but on Saturday, they overcame a team steadfast in matching its physicality.
With heavy hitting and some superb goaltending, the first period looked more like a Stanley Cup Final than the previous 64 minutes and 36 seconds, but once again, the Rangers built a two-goal advantage. After Ryan McDonagh's seeing-eye point shot opened the scoring, his next attempt, from same left point, hit Mats Zuccarello and nestled in the crease for him to bang home.
The Rangers had a great chance to steal a game on the road after another strong start, but withstanding Los Angeles' resolve was simply too tall of a task.
New York subdued Los Angeles in the second, quickly righting goals from Jarret Stoll and Willie Mitchell to have the scoreboard read 4-2 for the visitors after 40 minutes. But in the third, they weren't able to prevent the walls from closing in. As they always seem to do, the Kings forced extra time and set the stage for Brown's first-career postseason overtime goal with tallies from Dwight King and Marian Gaborik.
The puck will drop on Game 3 Monday at 8 p.m. ET.
Star Performer
Jonathan Quick allowed more than two goals in a Stanley Cup Final game for the first time in eight starts, but he was absolutely sensational in the third period and overtime.
His best moment was this point-blank stop on Brad Richards.
Turning Point
After having the pace dictated through two periods, the Kings started to assert themselves, but their means weren't without controversy. The Rangers were furious when King, wedged in the crease between McDonagh and Lundqvist, fell on top of the goaltender after his deflection made it 4-3.
Highlight Reel
A knack for placing puck under bar, Martin St. Louis did it again by finishing off this beautiful rush midway through the second period.
Quote of the Night
Lundqvist was livid after King's goal, and he continued to voice his displeasure after the game.
Henrik Lundqvist on the referees in the wake of thew Dwight King goal: "They just have to be better."

Lundqvist: "I don't expect a penalty...but they need to blow the whistle. A goalie can't move when you have a guy like that on top of you."
