Overview
Falling just outside the top tier of center prospects, Jared McCann should make for an intriguing selection in the middle of the first round. McCann matured into a leader at both ends of the ice in his second season with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds and while his game is rarely flashy, he possesses the talent and vision to make defenders pay for giving him too much room.
McCann's offensive inconsistency and lack of pro-level physicality are his biggest drawbacks, but his surprisingly powerful shot, playmaking intelligence, and defensive awareness all offset those concerns. He played in all situations against the toughest opposition for a division-winning team as a 17-year-old.
McCann is more of a long-term prospect who should have at least one more junior season ahead of him to mature physically and develop the dominant offensive game he seems capable of playing.

Scouts are saying
McCann is a gifted all-around player, and has a strong hockey IQ. ... He regularly lined up against the opponents' best players in tough even-strength minutes, and was effective in doing so. ... His best offensive asset in the attacking zone is his shot. He's got a bullet ... McCann certainly needs to get stronger, and despite a good physical work ethic he projects as a below-average physical player at the top level.
TSN director of scouting Craig Button:
Centres who play every situation in the game, are involved in all areas on the ice and contribute both with and without the puck are in high demand. The cliche of being a '200 foot player' applies to Jared.
Red Line Report (Top Prospects Game):
Was the most consistently dangerous forward on the team, creating chances for himself and linemates with intelligent, imaginative passes off both sides of the blade. Showed excellent touch on short area passes. Sees the ice and anticipates very well. Ripped a beautiful snap shot for the game winner in 3rd period, and also fired inches wide on a great chance that he created in the 2nd. Smooth, fluid stride with acceleration. Great hockey sense.
NHL Central Scouting's Chris Edwards:
His work ethic is excellent and he does so much to help his team -- penalty killing, power play. I am not sure I would have any concerns over a few quiet nights. He is contributing even when he is not producing points.
