Sharks sign Alex Stalock to 2-year contract
The San Jose Sharks have agreed to terms with backup goaltender Alex Stalock on a two-year contract extension, the team announced Tuesday. The Sharks had a busy Tuesday afternoon, and also inked fourth-line forward Mike Brown to a two-year pact.
Stalock was a pending Group 6 unrestricted free agent. In 27 appearances at the NHL level this season - his first full year in the NHL - Stalock amassed a 13-5-3 record and posted an impressive .931 save percentage. Those results are tremendous, although Stalock's .909 save percentage in 145 AHL starts may be more indicative of his true talent level.
The 26-year-old puck stopper sustained a career threatening injury when he was a skate cut him in the back of his knee during an AHL game in 2011. This is Stalock's fifth NHL contract and the first one-way deal of his NHL career.
According to David Pollak of the San Jose Mercury News, Stalock's new contract will pay $3.2 million for the 2014-15 and 2015-16 NHL season. That gives him an annual average salary (or cap-hit) of $1.6 million.
