MacKinnon claims Calder Trophy as NHL's top rookie
As expected, Colorado Avalanche super-freshman Nathan MacKinnon topped Tampa Bay Lightning teammates Odrej Palat and Tyler Johnson to claim the Calder Trophy as the NHL's top rookie.
MacKinnon, the first overall pick in the 2013 draft, led all rookies in points (63) assists (39) and goals (24, tied with Johnson), while emerging as a major contributor to Colorado's complete franchise turnaround (The Avalanche finished with a franchise record 52 wins after closing out the previous season in last place in the Western Conference).
The Halifax native even etched his name into the record books, registering a point in 13-straight games, breaking Wayne Gretzky's record for the longest point streak by an 18-year-old.
That Calder Trophy win will earn Nathan MacKinnon a bonus of $212,500 from his entry-level contract. #avs
