Report: Wild pursuing Jarome Iginla
The Minnesota Wild have been in contact with Boston Bruins forward and pending free agent Jarome Iginla, according to Michael Russo of the Minneapolis Star Tribune.
It is unclear whether the interest is mutual, Russo reports, but it is "definitely clear" the Wild would like to sign Iginla.
Minnesota struggled offensively last season, finishing 24th in goals scored with 199. Adding Iginla, who has 67 points (37 goals and 30 assists) in 70 career games against the Wild, would surely help the team improve in that department.
Russo speculates that the Wild could acquire an offensive-minded defenseman and scoring winger via trade, but are more likely to do so through free agency.
Whichever route the team takes, though, general manager Chuck Fletcher wants to ensure the player fits in with their long-term plans.
"We've tried to be aggressive if the move makes sense, but there's times, too, where you need to take what's there," Fletcher said. "Sometimes you have to lay off the pitch. You can't just swing at everything. This summer could be one of those summers where maybe you just accept what's there and not try to overpursue or push something that may not make you better."
Iginla is expected to hit the open market Tuesday, but remains in negotiations with Boston, his preferred destination.
