Coyotes' Smith on Dubnyk: 'He can definitely be a really good goaltender in this league'
The Arizona Coyotes took a chance on Devan Dubnyk, signing the 28-year-old to a one-year, $800,000 contract after the goaltender was bounced around from the Edmonton Oilers to the Nashville Predators to the Montreal Canadiens last season, finishing the year off in the AHL.
If anyone knows a thing or two about getting a second chance in the NHL, it's Coyotes starter Mike Smith; it wasn't until his sixth season that he found his stride, posting the best numbers of his career in the desert.
As such, he's a big believer in his new backup, who will also be entering his sixth season in the League after being drafted 14th overall back in 2004.
"It happened to me so why not other people?" Smith said, as per azcentral sports. "[Dubnyk] is a big guy. He moves fairly well and I think under the right guidance, I think he can definitely be a really good goaltender in this league for a long time still. … I've been there. I know what that feels like, and I'm sure he just wants to come in and get his feet back under him and I think there's no better place to do that than Arizona."
While Dubnyk won't be afforded the opportunity to jump right into Arizona's starting gig as Smith was upon his arrival, some time with the Coyotes under head coach Dave Tippett may be the right thing at the right time in terms of getting his career back on track.
