Predators' Roy dedicating offseason to getting into 'the best shape' after sub-par seasons
After several down years, Derek Roy is set on joining the Nashville Predators in the best shape of his career.
The 31-year-old, who signed a one-year, $1-million contract with the club on Tuesday, enrolled in former NHL forward Gary Roberts' vaunted fitness program after averaging only 36 points per season since 2010.
"I wanted to come in the best shape I could possibly coming into the season, and that's why I sought out Gary Roberts and his workout program," Roy told The Tennessean.
"I'm feeling great right now and hopefully at the end of the summer I'll be feeling better and not focusing on injuries."
Roy is a 0.74 point per game player over the course of his 666-game NHL career, and he's hoping that Roberts' training program, known for being intense and for getting players in tremendous shape, will pay off when he puts on the Predators' jersey.
"From a nutrition standpoint and working with some of the best athletes around has been good," he said. "It has been good for my health."
Roy posted career highs in goals (32) and assists (49) back in 2007-08 as a member of the Buffalo Sabres.
