Blue Jackets president Davidson: This team is capable of 'doing some damage'
The Columbus Blue Jackets haven't exactly had the busiest offseason, but team president John Davidson says the team is in better shape now than it once was.
"To see the depth we have, not only with our team here but the youngsters coming, I think that getting [forward] Nathan [Horton] in healthy is going to be a big boost for us,” Davidson said, via NHL.com.
Horton underwent offseason shoulder surgery last summer and played 35 games last season after returning in January.
Davidson believes the Blue Jackets are going to be a force to be reckoned with this season.
“It’s about knowing you have a chance to do some damage," he added. "This isn't on a wing and a prayer any more. This isn’t hoping [goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky] stops 55 shots. This is a team that has capabilities of winning at home, winning on the road, and doing some damage.”
The Blue Jackets acquired winger Scott Hartnell from the Philadelphia Flyers for center R.J. Umberger in June, but have otherwise been fairly quiet on the free agency and trade fronts.
Davidson says that's because they're content with the team they have.
"This is a team that I think now is being recognized not just as a team that is young and up-and-coming, it's a pretty good hockey club," the team president said. "We have a chance here to make a real good statement with this upcoming season."
Columbus won its first two playoff games in franchise history last April in the team's first-round series against the Pittsburgh Penguins, before losing in six games.
