Lightning's Bishop out to prove he's not a '1-hit wonder' after signing 2-year extension
Coming off a season in which he was a Vezina Trophy finalist as one of the National Hockey League's top goalies, Ben Bishop signed a two-year, $11.9M contract extension with the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday.
The new deal - which kicks in after the 2014-15 NHL season - carries a cap hit of $5.95 million, fair valuation for a goalie that posted a record of 37-14-7 with a .924 save percentage last season. 2013-14, however, marked Bishop's first run through the League as a No. 1 (and was cut short due to injury), and the 27-year-old is out to prove his performance was no fluke.
"I had one really good year this year - I think I've still got to prove myself," Bishop said, as per the Tampa Bay Times. "I want to be consistent year in and year out. I don't want to be a one-hit wonder. I want to be even better this year. I thought it was a fair deal on both sides."
Bishop is set to return to the ice this week after having screws removed from his injured wrist, and plans to be ready for training camp in September and what should be an exciting season for the Lightning.
"There's a lot of good things going on here," Bishop said. "And I'm really excited."
A big factor in the Lightning's ability to move forward will be Bishop's continued success; at the very least, his new deal allows prospects Andrei Vasilevskiy and Kristers Gudlevskis more time to develop.
