Fantasy: 5 players to target on the Los Angeles Kings
Top Targets
Anze Kopitar
Kopitar, who is going off the board as an average pick of 19.3 in Yahoo! leagues, was actually below his career average in points-per-game last year with 0.85 (career 0.90) but still managed 29 goals and 41 assists in 82 games. Kopitar played well with Marian Gaborik last season, and he should be alongside him again this year.
His 23 power play points put him in a tie for 20th in the league one season ago, and his shooting percentage of 14.5 was his best since posting a 15.9 percentage in 2007-08.
Consider him late in the first or real early in the second round. Don't expect a Stanley Cup hangover from the 27-year-old despite plenty of hockey last year with the Olympics and playoffs.
Proceed With Caution
Jeff Carter
Carter is coming off a 27 goal season in 72 regular-season games, but what was more impressive was his playoff performance. In the 26 games, the former first round pick in the 2003 draft scored 10 goals and added 15 assists, with four power play goals.
Carter has been going off the board as an average pick of 76.2 in Yahoo! leagues, around the likes of David Krejci and T.J. Oshie.
Two out of the last three years, he's average 0.38 goals-per-game, but the assists aren't there, recording just 43 in his last 175 games.
Jonathan Quick
The two-time Stanley Cup Champion looked great during most of the Championship run last year, but his regular season numbers the last two have been anything but.
The 28-year-old played in only 49 regular-season games in 2013-14, posting 27 wins, 17 losses with a 2.07 GAA and .915 GAA. In 2012-13, he posted a career-low in save percentage (.902) and a 2.45 GAA. Not terrible numbers, but nothing like 2011-12, when he posted a 1.95 GAA and .929 GAA.
With two rings to his name, fantasy owners seem to draft him earlier than they should, and this year is no exemption, going off the board as an average pick of 12.3 overall.
Consider taking him closer to the third round.
Marian Gaborik
Gaborik's tenure in Los Angeles after a trade from the Columbus Blue Jackets was a good one, as the former first round pick in the 2000 draft recorded 16 points in 19 games, and 22 points - 14 goals in 26 playoff games.
His chemistry with Kopitar was evident throughout the playoffs, but be cautious during your draft, as he has only 23 goals over the past two regular-seasons. (88 games)
Take A Flier On
Tyler Toffoli
Last year's rookie was riding high after an impressive playoffs that may have just put him on the fantasy map.
His 29 regular-season points in 62 games was a nice start to a career, but his seven goal, seven assist effort in 26 playoff games is what has fantasy owners excited this season.
Tanner Pearson and Jeff Carter are his expected linemates to begin the season, and a strong start to the year may make him the steal of the draft.
