Ducks coach Boudreau not satisfied despite sitting 1st overall

Kirby Lee / USA TODAY Sports

Bruce Boudreau isn't prepared to allow his team to coast towards the postseason.

While his Anaheim Ducks are sitting first overall in the NHL standings with 70 points through 49 games, there are areas in which he'd like to see definite improvement.

"(I'm) never satisfied," Boudreau said as his team prepares for Friday's game against the Chicago Blackhawks.

"Our numbers in everything aren't what the record indicates," he added, according to Mark Lazerus of the Chicago Sun-Times. "We find ways to win."

To wit, the Ducks sit outside the top ten in goal differential, ranking 11th with 146 goals scored and 130 goals allowed. The Ducks also rank 11th after averaging 30.6 shots on goal per game and 2.84 goals per game, and ninth in shots allowed per game with 28.6.

In terms of special teams, Anaheim ranks 18th in terms of power play success (17.7 percent) and 18th on the penalty kill (80.9 percent).

Without even diving into the realm of advanced stats, therefore, one can see that the Ducks success may not be as hard and fast as their record indicates.

As such, Boudreau, who has seen his fair share of regular season success followed by playoff failure, is right to keep pushing his squad to improve, lest the Ducks become another President's Trophy winner to flame out in the playoffs.
