Steve Moses breaks KHL single-season scoring record, drawing NHL interest
An American has made Russian hockey history.
Following a succesful penalty shot attempt in Jokerit's 4-2 win over Atlant on Wednesday, Steve Moses set a new KHL record with 36 goals in a single season.
Moses, a Massachusetts native who attended the University of New Hampshire, is playing his third season with Jokerit, a club in the midst of its inaugural season after moving over from the Finnish league.
The forward's success is believed to be raising eyebrows from NHL teams, as reported by Nick Mallard of the Sentinel & Enterprise:
Showing he can play with that caliber of players has begun provoking interest in the former St. Bernard's star in North America, according to sources like TSN's Bob McKenzie.
McKenzie speculates that Moses could draw interest from several teams, including the Columbus Blue Jackets and their general manager, Jarmo Kekalainen, who once brought Moses to Jokerit as the team's GM.
The TSN insider also says that Moses would likely seek a one-way NHL deal, meaning he wouldn't be mired in the AHL if he returned.
Moses's 5-foot-8 frame may be the biggest hindrance to catching on with a team in North America.
The 25-year-old sits ahead of former NHLers Nigel Dawes (31) and Stephane Da Costa (30) in the KHL's goal-scoring race.
