Sharks trade up to No. 31, select defenseman Jeremy Roy

The San Jose Sharks moved up eight spots in a trade with the Colorado Avalanche to select Sherbrooke Phoenix defenseman Jeremy Roy with the 31st overall pick in the 2015 NHL Draft.

San Jose parts with a second-round pick in 2016 and a sixth-round pick in 2017.

Overview:

Besides being a force offensively on the back end, one of Roy's biggest qualities is his off-ice intangibles. He is a true leader, as part of Canada's leadership core at the U-18 World Championships in April and has the character that all coaches look for in their stars.

He has the smarts and the compete to be an elite defenseman, complementing his good hands. His speed is not great, but is not a huge liability. He needs to work on his skating and shot.

"The scouting report on Jeremy Roy is that of a player who has real command of the puck and makes a significant difference when it's on his stick," TSN's director of scouting Craig Button said. "He has excellent ability in all areas defensively, offensively, and in transition. He is always thinking of how to exploit the opponent, regardless of where he is on the ice. Great poise with the puck. Though his speed is not exceptional, his mental pace of player is outstanding."
