New Devils GM Shero: 'We would want to score more goals'
He may have just taken the reigns, but it looks as though Ray Shero already has a plan in place for the New Jersey Devils.
Upon being announced as the team's new general manager Monday, Shero explained to reporters how he feels the Devils need to improve and in what direction he plans to move the team.
"Looking at the team from the outside, since I just got here, up front is an area we'll look at," said Shero. "We would want to score more goals and create more offense without abandoning a defensive structure and accountability that has been in place for years."
For nearly two decades, the Devils have been known for their defensive play, usually sacrificing offense in the process. Shero sees this as the biggest crutch for the club.
This season, the Devils finished 28th in the league with 2.15 goals per game, ahead of only the Arizona Coyotes and the Buffalo Sabres. Clearly, change up front is imperative.
It looks like the Devils could be big players entering the NHL Draft and free agency, according to Shero. They will also look to fill a coaching vacancy.
"I will have a very open mind to everything," said Shero. "I have no preconceived notions coming in, and we certainly have time on our side before NHL Draft and NHL free agency to get to know everybody. There is nothing concrete on adding a coach right now."
It's safe to say with Shero at the helm that the Devils will look like a different club come next season.
