McDavid says he wants to play in Oilers gear for 'the rest of my life' after 1st practice
Connor McDavid's first day with the Edmonton Oilers tested the youngster, but he enjoyed it so much that he wants to wear orange and blue forever.
"Today was a lot of fun," McDavid told Robert Tychkowski of the Edmonton Sun. The fitness testing wasn’t a whole lot of fun, but it was really cool to throw on the Oilers gear, the gear that I want to play the rest of my life wearing.
"It was very special to put it on and step onto Rexall with all the history."
The first-overall pick and future star of the league is considered the best prospect to hit the NHL since Sidney Crosby, after the youngster ran rampant through the OHL as a member of the Erie Otters.
With high expectations, McDavid's attitude and focus remained on point during orientation camp Wednesday, which can be tough once the spotlight hits and the game transitions to a new level.
"I’ve known him for about 24 hours … all I can say is he seems like a very nice, very humble guy and obviously everybody knows what he is capable of on the ice," said teammate Leon Draisaitl. "He’s a special guy and I think the whole organization should be very excited about him."
McDavid is being looked to as a savior of the franchise, but he'll get plenty of help from fellow youngsters Taylor Hall and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, along with a slew of new teammates, including Andrej Sekera, Griffin Reinhart, Cam Talbot, Eric Gryba, and Mark Letestu - all of whom were recently acquired by general manager Peter Chiarelli as he looks to rebuild the franchise.
Edmonton finished last season with one of the league's worst records at 24-44-14, so the Oilers hope the fancy new additions, led by McDavid, can help them turn things around.
