The Montreal Canadiens have signed forward Alex Semin to a one-year contract.

The deal is worth $1.1 million, according to TVA's Renaud Lavoie.

Semin, who was an unrestricted free agent, scored six goals and added 13 assists in 57 games for the Carolina Hurricanes in 2014-15.

"I like Montreal. I like this town. I like the fans here," Semin said. "There are good people on this team. It's a good organization."

The 31-year-old knows he struggled last season but believes he's capable of rediscovering the form that allowed him to score 40 goals playing alongside Alex Ovechkin with the Washington Capitals in 2009-10.

"I want to try (and start again)," he said. "Last season, I had a bad year. I didn't play well. I want to get back to how I can play."

Semin confirmed he didn't consider jumping overseas to the KHL, which aligns with what was previously reported.

"I never considered going to the KHL. I'm still young. I want to play here. My family likes living (in North America)," he said.

Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin said Semin will help boost the team's offense.

"We are very pleased to have reached a short-term agreement with Alexander Semin.

"Alex is a pure goal scorer with a good shot. We believe his addition to our group of forwards will strengthen our offensive production and our power play. A veteran winger with size, Semin has reached the 20-goal plateau seven times since the beginning of his NHL career 12 years ago. His signing represents a great opportunity for the organization and for Alex’s career."

Semin spent three years with the Hurricanes, scoring 22 goals in 2013-14.

He played six seasons for the Capitals after they selected him 13th overall in 2002.

Semin carried a $7 million cap hit last season.
