Ducks sign John Gibson to 3-year extension worth a reported $6.9M

John Gibson has signed a three-year contract extension with the Anaheim Ducks, the team announced Monday.

"I have some security now, that's the bottom line," Ducks general manager Bob Murray said.

"I'm very comfortable where we are," he added. "Before I was a little bit up in the air because of so many things that could happen. Now, we have one of our good, young goalies going forward locked up for four more years right now."

The contract - set to kick in when his entry-level contract expires at the end of this season - carries a $2.3-million average annual term, but will see Gibson earn a gradual increase in real dollars throughout the life of the deal, Eric Stephens of the Orange County Register reports.

Widely considered one of the best goaltending prospects in the NHL, Gibson was limited to just 34 appearances for the Ducks and their American Hockey League affiliate in Norfolk last year after an early-season groin injury derailed his year.

He finished with a 13-8 record to go along with a 2.60 GAA and .914 save percentage in his 23 NHL appearances.

Frederik Andersen will enter the season as the No. 1 option, but Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau has a trio of capable goaltenders at his disposal.

Anaheim acquired Anton Khudobin, who will count $2.25 million against the cap in a contract season, in an offseason trade.

Gibson, however, is the only backstop signed beyond the 2015-16 season.
