The 8 potential outcomes for Group A

With only a single match remaining, we're at that dreaded stage of the tournament where we get out our calculators, and nervously attempt to figure out exactly how it's still possible for our hopeless side to advance to the Round of 16.

Here's what has to happen for your team to get out of Group A:

There are eight different scenarios that could play out in Group A.

1. 1st Place: Brazil; 2nd Place: Mexico:

• If Cameroon wins or draws vs. Brazil, and Croatia vs. Mexico draw;
• If Brazil wins vs. Cameroon, and Mexico wins vs. Croatia, but Mexico scores fewer than three goals, and doesn't increase their goal differential to match or surpass Brazil's.

2. 1st Place: Brazil; 2nd Place: Croatia:

• If Brazil wins vs. Cameroon, and Croatia wins vs. Mexico.

3. 1st Place: Croatia; 2nd Place: Brazil:

• If Cameroon wins or draws vs. Brazil (but not by more than 2-0), and Croatia wins vs. Mexico (but not by a single goal).

4. 1st Place: Croatia; 2nd Place: Mexico:

• If Cameroon wins vs. Brazil 3-0, and Croatia wins vs. Mexico by only one goal.

5. 1st Place: Mexico; 2nd Place: Brazil:

• If Mexico wins vs. Croatia, and Cameroon wins or draws vs. Brazil;
• If Mexico wins vs. Croatia by a score of 3-0 or better, and Brazil wins vs. Cameroon by only one goal.

6. 1st Place: Mexico; 2nd Place: Croatia:

• If Croatia vs. Mexico draw, and Cameroon wins vs. Brazil.

7. 1st Place: Croatia; 2nd Place: Brazil and Mexico draw lots:

• If Cameroon wins vs. Brazil 2-0, and Croatia wins vs. Mexico 3-2.

8. 1st Place: Brazil and Mexico draw lots:

• Brazil wins 1-0 vs. Cameroon; Mexico wins 3-1 vs. Croatia.
