Djokovic suggests he might skip grass-court season

After his French Open ended with a quarterfinal loss to Marco Cecchinato on Tuesday, a disappointed and agitated Novak Djokovic suggested he might sit out the impending grass-court season.

"I don't know," Djokovic said during his brusque post-match press conference when asked where and when he plans to play next. "I don't know if I'm gonna play on grass."

The reporter who asked the question was taken aback. "At all?"

"I don't know if I'm gonna play on grass," Djokovic repeated.

The issue came up again later in the presser, and Djokovic cut in before the questioner could finish.

"I don't know what I'm gonna do, I really don't know," he said. "I just came from the court, I don't know. Sorry guys, I cannot give you that answer."

Djokovic also lost in the quarterfinals at Roland Garros a year ago, and while he did go on to play grass - winning the Eastbourne title and making the quarters at Wimbledon - he shut his season down and had elbow surgery immediately thereafter.

It's unclear if injury is the reason Djokovic is considering taking another hiatus. He took multiple medical timeouts during the loss to Cecchinato to have his shoulder, neck, and leg worked on. He said "a couple things" were bothering him, but "nothing major, really."

The 12-time Grand Slam champ hasn't won a major since the 2016 French Open, hasn't been past the quarters at one since the US Open that same year, and hasn't reached a final of any kind since that Eastbourne run nearly a year ago.
