Federer donates $1M to families in Switzerland impacted by COVID-19

Roger Federer has joined the rapidly growing list of professional athletes helping to combat the global coronavirus crisis, announcing that he and his wife, Mirka, are donating just over $1 million to aid families in Switzerland.

"These are challenging times for everyone and nobody should be left behind," the former world No. 1 wrote on social media. "Mirka and I have personally decided to donate one million Swiss Francs for the most vulnerable families in Switzerland."

Switzerland has 10,456 confirmed cases of the new coronavirus, which has resulted in 145 deaths. Over 400,000 people have been infected globally.

"Our contribution is just a start," the 20-time Grand Slam champion added. "We hope that others might join in supporting more families in need. Together we can overcome this crisis."

Federer, 38, is recovering from a knee surgery he underwent in February. He was aiming to return in time for Wimbledon, but, as with the rest of the sporting calendar, the tennis season is in limbo due to the pandemic.

The ATP and WTA Tours have both suspended play until at least June 7.
