The ATP fined Nick Kyrgios $12,500 Thursday and served him with a "Notice of Investigation" for remarks he made to Stan Wawrinka during their match at the Rogers Cup on Wednesday.
The fine represents the $10,000 on-site maximum that can be imposed, plus an additional $2,500 fine for comments Kyrgios made to a ball person.
Kyrgios made an insulting comment connecting Wawrinka's girlfriend to Thanasi Kokkinakis. The world No. 5 urged the ATP to discipline Kyrgios.
When asked to explain why he'd made the crude comment, Kyrgios claimed Wawrinka had been getting "lippy" with him and that it was "in-the-moment sort of stuff."
Wawrinka retired due to injury in the third set of the match.
