<p>Duke head coach Jon Scheyer signed a two-year contract extension that runs through the 2030-31 season, vice president and director of athletics Nina King announced Thursday.</p><p>The 38-year-old Scheyer took over after the legendary Mike Krzyzewski retired in 2022. He had spent the previous eight seasons as an associate head coach and assistant under Krzyzewski.</p><p>Duke's reached the NCAA Tournament in each of Scheyer's three seasons in charge, including a Final Four run in 2025.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>"Jon's remarkable impact over his first three seasons has positioned Duke basketball for sustained excellence, and we are proud to ensure his leadership well into the future," King said in a statement.</p><p>"He has delivered championships and national prominence, and he continues to lead a program built on character, connection, and a relentless pursuit of greatness."</p><p>Scheyer's 89 victories are tied with Brad Stevens and Brad Underwood for the most by a head coach through their first three seasons at the Division I level, according to ESPN Research.</p><p>Scheyer is excelling on the recruiting trail as well. The Blue Devils are bringing in a trio of McDonald's All-Americans this upcoming season, including No. 3 overall recruit Cameron Boozer.</p>

The Lynx outscored the Mercury in the first quarter in three of the four matchups, including Game 2, when Phoenix trailed by 16 points at halftime and was down by as many as 20 before mounting a comeback to avoid a 0-2 series deficit. In Game 4, the Mercury fell behind 25-14 through the opening 10 minutes and didn't make a field goal until the midway point of the quarter. The 29-year-old is punishing foes in the short roll, beating her counterparts off the bounce, and making contested fadeaways. She's come through for Las Vegas in the biggest moments, topping the 35-point mark in each series-clinching win. Wilson's defense has been equally impressive as she's recorded 5.4 stocks per contest.</p><p>The Aces went 3-0 against the Mercury this season with Wilson in the lineup as the All-Star center put up a dominating 25 points and 15.7 boards per game.</p><p><strong>Biggest strength: Championship experience</strong></p><p>Las Vegas is no stranger to the bright lights. It returns five players from its previous two championship squads, including Wilson, Chelsea Gray, and Jackie Young.</p><p>Wilson and Gray both have Finals MVP awards in their trophy cabinet. Meanwhile, Young is playing the best basketball of her career and was a key contributor in the Aces' most recent championship appearance, posting back-to-back games of at least 20 points, five rebounds, and four assists in their 2023 triumph over the Liberty. However, she has shot the ball better since being moved to the bench midseason, making 40.9% of her threes across 19 appearances as a reserve. The playoffs have been a mixed bag for the six-time All-Star. Las Vegas could use Loyd's shot-making prowess to clear more space for Wilson to operate down low.</p><p><strong>Reason for concern: Big Three's minutes</strong></p><p>How much does the Aces' Big Three of Wilson, Young, and Gray have left in the tank? The trio is leading the WNBA in minutes played during the postseason and has collectively been on the court for 113 more minutes than the Mercury's troika of Thomas, Kahleah Copper, and Satou Sabally. That might loom large entering the first best-of-seven series in WNBA Finals history, especially after the league's longest regular season ever.</p>

<p>Guard <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/96039" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/96039">Quentin Grimes</a> is signing a one-year, $8.7-million qualifying offer to remain with the Philadelphia 76ers, his agent told <a href="https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/46451477/quentin-grimes-signs-87-million-qualifying-offer-76ers">ESPN's Shams Charania</a>.</p><p>Grimes was a restricted free agent and had until Wednesday at 11:59 p.m. ET to sign his qualifying offer.</p><p>The 25-year-old can now veto any trades involving him this upcoming season and is slated to hit the open market next summer as an unrestricted free agent.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Grimes and the 76ers had a lengthy contract negotiation process with the two sides <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3353166" href="https://thescore.com/news/3353166">reportedly</a> "very far apart" on a new deal as of last week. The former first-round pick wasn't in attendance for the club's media day and didn't travel to Abu Dhabi for their preseason games against the New York Knicks.</p><p>Grimes' side initially sought a contract in the $30 million range, according to Charania. His agent said the 76ers' first formal proposal was a four-year, $39-million contract offer that came on Sept. 24.</p><p>Grimes' representatives countered with a one-year contract worth $17 million while waiving the no-trade clause or a two-year deal at $34 million with a player option, adds Charania. The 76ers rejected both proposals, leading to Grimes signing the qualifying offer.</p><p>Philadelphia acquired Grimes from the Dallas Mavericks last February in exchange for Caleb Martin and a 2025 second-round pick. He had a strong showing for the 76ers in the latter stages of the 2024-25 campaign, averaging 21.9 points, 5.2 boards, 4.5 assists, and 1.5 steals across 28 appearances.</p><p>Grimes' addition is significant as both <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/31932" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/31932">Joel Embiid</a> and <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nba/players/1889" href="https://thescore.com/nba/players/1889">Paul George</a> have no timelines for a return. "Year after year, the only thing that remains consistent is a lack of accountability from our leaders."</p><p>Collier added, "Fans see it every night. Coaches - both winning and losing - point it out every night in pregame and postgame media, yet leadership just issues fines and looks the other way. They ignore the issues that everyone inside the game is begging to be fixed. That is negligence."</p><p>Collier, who serves as vice president of the WNBA players' union, revealed that she met with Engelbert at Unrivaled in February to discuss how the commissioner planned to address the league's officiating issues.</p><p>The five-time All-Star says Engelbert told her that "'only the losers complain about the refs.'"</p><p>Collier said she also asked Engelbert about increasing the value of rookie-scale contracts with the current CBA set to expire in October and the likes of <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///wnba/players/121626" href="https://thescore.com/wnba/players/121626">Caitlin Clark</a>, <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///wnba/players/121629" href="https://thescore.com/wnba/players/121629">Angel Reese</a>, and <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///wnba/players/171763" href="https://thescore.com/wnba/players/171763">Paige Bueckers</a> driving so much revenue for the WNBA.</p><p>"'Caitlin should be grateful she makes $16 million off the court because without the platform that the WNBA gives her, she wouldn't make anything,'" Collier said of Engelbert's response. "And in that same conversation, she told me, 'Players should be on their knees, thanking their lucky stars for the media rights deal that I got them.'</p><p>"That's the mentality driving our league from the top. We go to battle every day to protect a shield that doesn't value us. The league believes it succeeds despite its players, not because of them."</p><p>Clark had no response to Collier's recollection of Engelbert's comments, the Fever told <a href="https://x.com/alexaphilippou/status/1973093461986296182">ESPN's Alexa Philippou</a>.</p><p>Engelbert responded to Collier in a statement released later Tuesday.</p><p>"I have the utmost respect for Napheesa Collier and for all the players in the WNBA. "My focus remains on ensuring a bright future for the players and the WNBA, including collaborating on how we continue to elevate the game.</p><p>"I am disheartened by how Napheesa characterized our conversations and league leadership, but even when our perspectives differ, my commitment to the players and to this work will not waver."</p>

The former MVP suited up for Team USA at the 2024 Paris Olympics but was held out of Philadelphia's preseason slate and its first nine regular-season contests to manage the surgically repaired joint.</p><p>Embiid tried to play through the issue and reportedly received injections to treat it. However, the seven-time All-Star continued to experience swelling and was shut down for the campaign in February.</p><p>Embiid had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee in April, 14 months after undergoing a procedure to repair a torn meniscus in the same knee. The former No. 3 pick had previously admitted he probably needed a second knee surgery to recapture his peak form.</p><p>While there's no timetable for Embiid's return, the big man said he feels "pretty good" and is taking things day by day.</p><p>"There's not necessarily an expectation. ... Being 100%. <p>The New York Liberty won't be renewing Sandy Brondello's contract for the 2026 season, the team announced Tuesday.</p><p>The move comes just one year after Brondello guided the Liberty to its maiden WNBA title.</p><p>New York will begin its search for Brondello's successor immediately.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>"We would like to thank Sandy Brondello for her everlasting impact on the New York Liberty," Liberty general manager Jonathan Kolb said in a statement.</p><p>"Sandy finishes her tenure in New York as the winningest coach in franchise history, and she took us to never-before-seen heights as the first head coach to lead the Liberty to a championship. We wish Sandy the very best in her next chapter."</p><p>Brondello went 107-53 over four seasons and made the playoffs in each of those campaigns. The former Coach of the Year led the Liberty to their first Finals appearance in 21 years during the 2023 season before breaking through the following campaign.</p><p>New York began its title defense with nine straight wins but was hit with injuries to multiple key players throughout the season. The team finished fifth in the league standings with a 27-17 record.</p><p>The Liberty subsequently fell in three games to the Phoenix Mercury in the opening round of the WNBA playoffs.</p>

"He's meant a lot to me. I've expressed that to him publicly and personally. He's meant a lot to my career.</p><p>Brunson joined the Knicks in July 2022 during Thibodeau's third season at the helm. The Villanova product blossomed under Thibodeau's tutelage, earning his first two All-Star selections and All-NBA nods.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Brunson averaged a career-high 28.7 points in 2023-24 en route to finishing fifth in MVP voting. The 27-year-old played a key role off the Lynx's bench since her arrival, averaging 8.6 points and 1.2 steals to go with a 45.5% clip from deep across 11 appearances.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Carrington scored 11 points in 14 minutes during the team's series-clinching win versus the Valkyries.</p><p>The Connecticut Sun selected Carrington with the 20th overall pick in the 2021 WNBA draft. She had a breakout season last year during her final campaign with the Sun, winning Most Improved Player honors and earning her maiden All-Defensive first-team selection.</p>

Cheryl Reeve's squad won a record-tying 34 games and owned the league's best offensive and defensive unit during the regular season.</p><p>Minnesota produced a dominant two-way performance in its series-opening victory over the Valkyries, getting 42 of its 101 points from the bench and limiting the expansion club to 33.9% shooting. The team's next performance was far from perfect with Golden State leading by as many as 17 points. While both players were instrumental in the Fever's first playoff series win since 2015, their supporting cast also made some vital contributions.</p><p>Natasha Howard had 12 points in each of Indiana's victories, providing the club with a rim-running big in transition and an aggressive driver. Lexie Hull found ways to pitch in despite her shooting struggles, including a clutch steal to seal Game 3. Odyssey Sims took some playmaking responsibilities off Mitchell's plate, tallying 15 assists in the opening-round series.</p><p>Indiana's second unit also did a great job of buying some minutes for the starters. Veteran big Brianna Turner brought energy on the glass and a shot-blocking presence. With the Aces facing elimination against the Seattle Storm, the seven-time All-Star rose to the occasion, tying a playoff career high with 38 points in a narrow Game 3 win.</p><p>Wilson had amassed 50 points through the first two games of the series. The Storm found success in the fourth quarter of Game 2 with rookie center Dominique Malonga guarding Wilson. But neither Malonga nor three-time All-Defensive selection Ezi Magbegor provided much resistance against the Las Vegas center with both teams' seasons hanging in the balance.</p><p>Wilson showcased the offensive repertoire that helped her capture a second straight scoring title. She drained midrange pull-ups, attacked off the bounce, scored off the pick-and-roll, and made several contested turnaround jumpers. The point forward's all-around play made her one of five finalists for this season's MVP award. Her versatility was on display all series and took the spotlight Friday evening as the Mercury knocked out the defending champion New York Liberty.</p><p>She dropped 20 points, 11 boards, and 11 assists in Game 3 for her record-extending fifth career playoff triple-double. Thomas joined Sheryl Swoopes as the only players in WNBA history with a triple-double in a winner-take-all postseason contest. No other player has registered a 20-point triple-double in the playoffs.</p><p>The six-time All-Star used her brute strength to punish mismatches in the post and power through defenders when driving to the basket. Thomas found open shooters off the drive-and-kick and was attentive to teammates making backdoor cuts or leaking ahead in transition. The change guaranteed at least one home game for the lower seed instead of having to play the first two contests on the road before hosting a potential Game 3.</p><p>All four opening-round matchups would've gone the distance if the Lynx hadn't rallied past the Valkyries. The tweaked format produced some memorable playoff moments, even though not all the lower seeds prevailed.</p><p>Malonga had a true coming-of-age performance in the Storm's Game 2 comeback win, while Indiana's blowout home victory set the stage for its dramatic series-clinching win over the Atlanta Dream. The rest of the league also got a taste of the "Ballhalla" experience when Golden State hosted Minnesota for Game 2. The 1-1-1 arrangement couldn't have worked out any better.</p>
