</ul><p>What's the point of playing fantasy football if you aren't willing to take some bold stands? Many of us have been waiting a long time for things to click for him as a passer. At this point, it's possible it never happens.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>But that doesn't mean he can't still be a valuable fantasy asset. Think back to that incredible 2022 season. While Fields' shortcomings as a passer were undoubtedly a problem for the Bears in real life, his 1,143 yards and eight touchdowns on the ground still helped him finish as a top-six QB in fantasy.</p><p>Fields will get plenty of runway as the Jets' starter after signing a two-year, $40-million deal in free agency. And with a defenive-minded head coach in Aaron Glenn, you can bet New York will favor a run-heavy approach in complementing its defense. The Jets rounding out an impressive young offensive line at the top of this year's draft sets the stage for Fields to lead the charge on that front. He's currently being drafted as the 14th QB off the board. Bold, I know. But hey, it's probably worth touching on this one. Last season's injury issues seem to have had a major impact on the fantasy community's willingness to count on the 49ers running back. His 9th overall ADP is the lowest its been since 2018.</p><p>On one hand, it makes sense. The 29-year-old has a pretty extensive injury history. And there aren't many running backs who maintain elite levels of production at this point in their career. But this is still McCaffrey we're talking about.</p><p>There's a reason he's been a top-two fantasy pick for six years running - no other back can offer this much upside both as a runner and as a receiver out of the backfield. And his role as the centerpiece of a Kyle Shanahan offense pushes the fantasy potential through the roof. Will he be able to stay healthy enough to deliver? Beats me. There's something about veteran savvy that all too often tricks me into believing they can produce at a high level for longer than is actually possible. Sue me. I assure you, though, this is not one of those occasions.</p><p>Adams' 37th overall ADP - the cheapest he's been since 2017 - can only be explained by fantasy managers overthinking the age. Despite a midseason move to New York, and some clear issues getting back on the same page with longtime teammate Aaron Rodgers, Adams posted 854 yards and seven touchdowns in just 11 appearances with the Jets. Extrapolate that out to a 17-game schedule, and you're looking at 1,300 yards and double-digit touchdowns.</p><p>The 32-year-old is one of the best route-runners this league has ever seen. His game was always going to age gracefully. Joining the Rams affords him the perfect situation to prove how much he's got left in the tank. Matthew Stafford is an enormous QB upgrade over a fading Rodgers, Puka Nacua is an ideal running mate, and you can bet Sean McVay has big plans for a new weapon so adept at winning one-on-one matchups on the outside.</p><figure class="article-segment--embed"><iframe title="George Pickens" aria-label="Table" id="datawrapper-chart-wi4kV" src="https://datawrapper.dwcdn.net/wi4kV/1/" scrolling="no" frameborder="0" style="width: 0; min-width: 100% !important; border: none;" height="99" data-external="1"></iframe><script type="text/javascript">!function(){"use strict";window.addEventListener("message",function(a){if(void 0!==a.data["datawrapper-height"]){var e=document.querySelectorAll("iframe");for(var t in a.data["datawrapper-height"])for(var r,i=0;r=e[i];i++)if(r.contentWindow===a.source){var d=a.data["datawrapper-height"][t]+"px";r.style.height=d}}})}();

He can go up and get it as well as anyone, but the rest of his game leaves a lot to be desired. That's probably part of the reason the Steelers were content to move on for little more than a 2026 third-round pick.</p><p>And yet here we are getting excited about Pickens anyway. Why? Well, for starters, the situation upgrade is staggering. For as many faults as he may have, Pickens overcame some truly horrific quarterback play to produce at a fairly consistent level in Pittsburgh. The move to Dallas hooks him up with Dak Prescott, one of the 10 best QBs in football when healthy.</p><p>Defenses focusing their attention on CeeDee Lamb, mostly lined up in the slot, should open up plenty of opportunities for Pickens to do his thing on the outside. And if the current state of the Cowboys backfield is any indication, it's possible that this ends up being an extremely pass-heavy offense. Aller / Getty Images Sport / Getty</span></figcaption></figure><p>Metcalf will be a fascinating player to watch after making the move to Pittsburgh. Going from Geno Smith to a fading version of Aaron Rodgers is a pretty clear downgrade at quarterback. And an Arthur Smith offense is bound to be more run-heavy than what we saw from Ryan Grubb in Seattle last year.</p><p>Barring another aggressive move from the Steelers, though, there is effectively no competition for targets. Metcalf is the clear No. 1 receiver, and his areas of dominance - slants and fades - would appear to be a particularly strong fit for what his new quarterback likes to do most.</p><p>Nobody in Pittsburgh is going to develop a Davante Adams-like relationship with Rodgers. But the way targets shook out for Adams with the Jets last season - 114 in 11 games - demonstrates Rodgers' clear willingness to feed his top target. Now picture what those numbers could look like on a team that doesn't have Garrett Wilson as the No. 2. Metcalf being drafted at the top of the fifth round feels way too late to me.</p><p><strong>More from this series:</strong></p><ul>

Nobody could reasonably argue otherwise after he ran for 1,144 yards with 15 total touchdowns in 2023 before then turning things up a notch with 1,299 rushing yards and 16 scores in 2024. But the risk involved in this pick, as is the case for so many other fantasy-related questions, isn't about talent.</p><p>The Rams once again added to the backfield in this year's draft, landing Jarquez Hunter in the fourth round. Scoff at the draft capital if you will, but it hasn't been difficult to gather that Sean McVay was head over heels for the Auburn product. Might he see Hunter's big-play ability as something of a missing piece for this run game?</p><p>Factor in that the Rams also have 2024 second-rounder Blake Corum in the mix, and it seems entirely possible that this backfield looks a lot different than the one-man show that produced 350 touches for Williams last year. He'll remain the lead guy going forward, but Hunter and Corum cutting into his workload might make it tough to see the return value you're expecting from a running back with a 26th overall ADP, according to FantasyPros.</p><figure class="article-segment--embed"><iframe title="Joe Mixon" aria-label="Table" id="datawrapper-chart-qctGx" src="https://datawrapper.dwcdn.net/qctGx/1/" scrolling="no" frameborder="0" style="width: 0; min-width: 100% !important; border: none;" height="99" data-external="1"></iframe><script type="text/javascript">!function(){"use strict";window.addEventListener("message",function(a){if(void 0!==a.data["datawrapper-height"]){var e=document.querySelectorAll("iframe");for(var t in a.data["datawrapper-height"])for(var r,i=0;r=e[i];i++)if(r.contentWindow===a.source){var d=a.data["datawrapper-height"][t]+"px";r.style.height=d}}})}();

The former Bengals running back overcame an early ankle injury to post his fifth career 1,000-yard season, topping the century mark in seven different games. It was an incredible return on the Texans' investment after getting him from Cincinnati for a seventh-round pick.</p><p>It's possible that the soon-to-be 29-year-old has another RB2 season in the tank, but be careful with this one. Mixon's output was extremely inconsistent over the second half of the 2024 campaign, a stretch that included three games averaging less than 2 yards per carry. And before we put all the blame on the offensive line, consider the possibility that this year's unit, albeit with some different names after a busy offseason, could be every bit as bad.</p><p>And then there's the presence of Nick Chubb. I'm going to go out on a limb and wager a guess that the former Browns star wasn't going to sign anywhere as a designated backup. He expects to play. Mixon will remain the starter, but it would be a surprise if Houston's newest addition didn't have some sort of meaningful role. Returning value on a fourth-round ADP might be difficult without the kind of volume Mixon was getting last year.</p><figure class="article-segment--embed"><iframe title="Tyreek Hill" aria-label="Table" id="datawrapper-chart-FbBp8" src="https://datawrapper.dwcdn.net/FbBp8/1/" scrolling="no" frameborder="0" style="width: 0; min-width: 100% !important; border: none;" height="99" data-external="1"></iframe><script type="text/javascript">!function(){"use strict";window.addEventListener("message",function(a){if(void 0!==a.data["datawrapper-height"]){var e=document.querySelectorAll("iframe");for(var t in a.data["datawrapper-height"])for(var r,i=0;r=e[i];i++)if(r.contentWindow===a.source){var d=a.data["datawrapper-height"][t]+"px";r.style.height=d}}})}();

Hill has been one of the league's most unstoppable players for the majority of his pro career. While his production dipped in 2024, he was also playing through a wrist injury that required surgery at season's end.</p><p>It's entirely possible that a healthy Hill immediately recaptures his previous level of play and actually outperforms his third-round ADP. It'll certainly be tempting to scoop him up so much later than was possible at any point over the last few years. I'm probably going to let someone else be the one to take that gamble, though.</p><p>Even with the wrist injury, the timing of the down year raises too many alarm bells to be overly confident about his prospects in his age-31 season. It was only a matter of time before he lost a step. As a player who has won with an unparalleled combination of speed and quickness, it was always hard to imagine Hill's game aging particularly gracefully. It's only fair to assume that a player that many hailed as a generational prospect would take a significant step forward after a largely frustrating rookie year. Maybe that's exactly what happens.</p><p>Personally, if we're talking about fantasy investments, I'd like to see it first. Harrison didn't separate nearly as well as expected as a rookie, and a sub-par contested catch rate - 42.1%, according to PFF - did little to compensate. In general, it was clear that he and Kyler Murray simply couldn't get on the same page. Are we sure that's something that will naturally get smoothed out with reps, and not actually a matter of clashing play styles?</p><p>Harrison's early fourth-round ADP may not seem like an unreasonable price tag, given the potential, but it's still more than I'm willing to pay on account of what we saw last season. Rashee Rice going a few picks later, despite a far better fit with the best QB on the planet, drives this one home for me. And it's not like you're passing up elite talents to get him in the seventh round of your drafts. But the market correction has still been a little slow for my liking.</p><p>While the Chiefs legend has mastered the art of just leaving enough gas in the tank for some more postseason magic, the regular-season output that matters to fantasy managers is bottoming out in a hurry. Kelce remained a target machine in 2024, but he did staggeringly little with the opportunity. His 823 yards represents the lowest total from any tight end to receive 130-plus targets since at least 1992.</p><p>Kelce remained a high-volume player, in part, because of a lack of options elsewhere in the Chiefs receiving corps. But with Xavier Worthy heading into Year 2, and a healthy Rashee Rice likely becoming the go-to target short and over the middle, Kelce's opportunities could drop substantially this year. It's tough to wrap your mind around it, but Kelce is probably still overpriced. Reaching to fill your tight end spot with a familiar name, rather than waiting another three-plus rounds to take an ascending tight end like Tucker Kraft, could prove costly.</p><p><strong>More from this series:</strong></p><ul>

<p>How's this for a way to spice up the NFL's summer break?</p><p>The long-awaited Jalen Ramsey move came down Monday morning, with initial reports indicating that the Miami Dolphins had finally found a trade parter in the Pittsburgh Steelers. But the star corner was only one part of what turned out to be a <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3306062" href="https://thescore.com/news/3306062">blockbuster deal</a>.</p><p>Pittsburgh will also get tight end Jonnu Smith while sending three-time All-Pro safety Minkah Fitzpatrick the other way. </table></div></figure><p>Let's break it down from each side.</p><h3>Steelers</h3><p>The Steelers are all-in on trying to win in 2025. While that may prove to be a little ambitious with this version of Aaron Rodgers under center, we have no choice but to respect the effort. This is exactly how Pittsburgh should be following up its gamble on the 41-year-old future Hall of Famer. Consider it a pleasant surprise, given the conservative way in which this team has typically done business.</p><p>Ramsey figures to be an outstanding addition to the defensive backfield. He turns 31 in October, so there is some risk of a steep drop-off in the near future. But he was still playing at a high level last season in Miami. And with Darius Slay and Joey Porter Jr. already in the mix at corner, he could be headed for a slot-heavy role that may well be the ideal way to prolong an incredible career.</p><p>Don't rule out further steps in the Charles Woodson career arc, either. Fitzpatrick's surprise departure leaves a void at safety, and Ramsey has the smarts, athleticism, and tackling skills to make an impact from any spot in the secondary.</p><p>Smith isn't quite the same level of game-changer, and tight end probably wasn't the most glaring need for this offense. But the Steelers were evidently seeking playmakers wherever they could get them. The 29-year-old is coming off a career year in Miami, where he racked up 88 catches for 884 yards and eight touchdowns. He was particularly effective with the ball in his hands, ranking fourth among all tight ends with 510 yards after the catch.</p><p>Adding that kind of ability as a complement to the possession skills of Pat Freiermuth gives the Steelers an interesting one-two-punch at the position. Offensive coordinator Arthur Smith is a big fan of heavy personnel, and he's plenty familiar with his new tight end's capabilities, having coached him at previous stops in both Tennessee and Atlanta.</p><p>Giving up Fitzpatrick does take a bit of steam out of this deal overall, as he's long been one of the leaders of a consistently strong Steelers defense. But there were some real signs of him slowing down over the last two years. The 28-year-old has recorded just one interception since posting a league-best six picks in 2022, and he's coming off a season in which he allowed five touchdowns and a career-worst 132.1 passer rating in coverage, according to PFF.</p><p>The $15.5 million in 2025 cap savings will help cover the arrivals of Ramsey and Smith while also allowing the Steelers to maintain some additional flexibility ahead of camp. If it's all about 2025 in Pittsburgh, there are still some interesting options when it comes to rounding out the roster and giving this team a real chance to compete.</p><p>Could the Steelers replace Fitzpatrick with a veteran free agent like Justin Simmons? The 31-year-old, who has earned second-team All-Pro honors on four separate occasions, fits this short-term timeline. And what about another receiver alongside offseason trade acquisition DK Metcalf? Rodgers would certainly appreciate the route-running skills of an Amari Cooper or Keenan Allen. Gabe Davis was recently in Pittsburgh for a visit, too.</p><p>Threading the needle with an overwhelmingly veteran roster will be no easy task in a loaded AFC. But for a team that has so consistently done nothing with its high floor for competitiveness under Mike Tomlin, why not give it a shot before the potential rebuild that lies ahead? If nothing else, the Steelers are going to be a fascinating watch this season. It's been a while.</p><p><strong>Grade: B+</strong></p><h3>Dolphins</h3><p>This deal isn't easy to piece together from the Dolphins' perspective.</p><p>Ramsey's exit had long been in the works, so there's no surprise there. It's never going to be easy to part with a player of his caliber, though. That's especially true when the move comes just one season after a three-year extension that had, at the time, made him the highest-paid cornerback in football. The Dolphins will be taking on dead-money hits from that deal for each of the next two seasons.</p><p>Smith is the weird one here. There had been some rumblings about trade talks in the spring - apparently a result of the veteran tight end seeking a new contract after his first Pro Bowl nod. Having established himself as an outstanding fit in the Dolphins' offense, it's tough to understand why he was facing so much resistance for a new deal in Miami.</p><p>The asking price clearly wasn't going to be all that prohibitive, as the 29-year-old is getting a one-year, $12-million extension upon arrival in Pittsburgh. A short-term commitment with an annual salary that ties for ninth among all tight ends seems more than reasonable.</p><p>Maybe the Dolphins simply liked Fitzpatrick enough to part with both Ramsey and Smith. Safety did indeed become a glaring need after they lost Jevon Holland in free agency. Reuniting with their former first-round pick, who was traded to Pittsburgh early in his sopohomore season in 2019, is a pretty fun way to make a splash at that spot.</p><p>But Fitzpatrick's game has been trending in the wrong direction of late, and now the Dolphins have major needs to fill at both cornerback and tight end. Striking a deal with Asante Samuel Jr. could be a step in the right direction to address the former. But signing a player who is only available because of offseason neck surgery also comes with plenty of risk.</p><p>And while the Dolphins are reportedly turning to the trade market in an effort to replace Smith, it's tough to imagine they'll be able to find a player who provides such a seamless fit as a high-volume pass-catcher. Smith was second only to Tyreek Hill among Dolphins players with 111 targets last season.</p><p>Miami deserves some credit for landing Fitzpatrick in a deal that easily could have ended up as Ramsey and Smith in exchange for a few mid-round pick swaps. But the roster is still moving in the wrong direction on both sides of the ball, and this trade doesn't give them any sort of relief from a precarious cap situation. That's not going to help matters in what could be a make-or-break season for this staff.</p><p>Nobody should be surprised if we're right back here at the midseason mark, with the Dolphins playing a central role in trade deadline festivities. <p>Some things never change.</p><p>For a brief moment, it seemed like the Cincinnati Bengals were flirting with a different organizational identity. At least that was the optimistic way to interpret early-offseason deals for Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins. As it turns out, we should have known better.</p><p>Any hope that this notoriously frugal organization would finally start operating like a serious football team was short-lived. Owner/president Mike Brown, the 89-year-old son of team founder Paul Brown, wasted little time in returning to the franchise's usual way of doing business.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>The first sign came just a few weeks after Chase and Higgins cashed in together: Trey Hendrickson, having put together back-to-back 17.5-sack seasons, was up for a new contract of his own. As the lone star on an otherwise barren defense, it was logical to assume he would be a priority for Cincinnati. The front office's actions indicate otherwise.</p><p>Contract negotiations can get complicated for any team - the Bengals aren't alone in that. But it shouldn't be difficult to give Hendrickson a deal in line with his well-established market value. The team also hasn't done itself any favors in allowing this to devolve into an uncomfortable standoff playing out through the media.</p><p>"I think he should be happy at certain rates that maybe he doesn't think he'd be happy at," executive vice president Katie Blackburn <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3256694" href="https://thescore.com/news/3256694">said</a> at the NFL owners meetings in April. "I think some of it is on him to be happy at some point, and if he's not, you know, that's what holds it up sometimes."</p><p>Hendrickson was understandably disappointed by those remarks. He later made it clear that he wouldn't play for the Bengals under his current contract and shed some light on the contentious situation.</p><p>"I think over the last week or so, it's become personal, unfortunately," Hendrickson <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3285319" href="https://thescore.com/news/3285319">said</a> while sitting out team workouts in May. "When there's a lack of communication in any relationship … (it) leads to animosity, and that leaves my narrative only to me with no clear direction."</p><p>Recent <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3300468" href="https://thescore.com/news/3300468">reporting</a> suggests the two sides have resumed contract talks, leading to some renewed optimism about Hendrickson's future in Cincinnati. We'll see. We heard the same things in March before the relationship started to fall apart.</p><p>No strangers to fighting multiple fires at once, the Bengals are also in a standoff with first-round rookie Shemar Stewart. The Texas A&amp;M product was a spectator at spring workouts due to a dispute over void language the team wants to include in his yet-to-be-signed contract.</p><p>"The Bengals are trying to set a new precedent in terms of their contract language, putting in ... default language that, if you mess up once, it voids the rest of your contract," NFL Network's <a href="https://youtu.be/4RCovbyKrKg?feature=shared&amp;t=230">Tom Pelissero</a> said. "They have not historically had that language in their contracts. ... They're trying to put it in the contract now."</p><p>This isn't a completely new idea; other teams around the league include similar language as a form of protection. But what did the Bengals expect to happen when they decided that this would be the year they set a new standard? 2024 first-rounder Amarius Mims didn't have to accept such terms, so why would Stewart?</p><p>And Stewart's teammates, who are well aware of how these things work, appear to have his back.</p><p>"It's made it very easy when the people in here, in the locker room, say 'you're doing the right things,' especially the star players," Stewart said, according to <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6417289/2025/06/10/shemar-stewart-bengals-nfl/">The Athletic's Sarah Jean Maher</a>.</p><p>Both of these situations could be resolved over the next few weeks. If Hendrickson and Stewart are on the field when training camp gets underway at the end of July, we'll all get to pretend it was much ado about nothing. But the painful journey to get there still sheds an unflattering light on this organization's priorities.</p><p>Spending big on both Chase and Higgins - a uniquely bold investment within a single position group - should have been the Bengals' first step in committing to do everything to win while quarterback Joe Burrow is in his prime. These contract squabbles, like so many other decisions from this front office over the years, run counter to that kind of commitment.</p><p>In Hendrickson's case, there shouldn't be much to figure out. A three-year deal worth something in the range of $90 million probably would have settled the matter months ago. If that number seems too big, just imagine how much worse this 25th-ranked defense would be without one of the league's most consistent edge rushers. There's no excuse for messing around - the Bengals have $31.9 million in cap space.</p><p>Stewart, drafted to give Hendrickson some help on the defensive line, is an exciting but raw prospect who already faced an uphill battle in terms of making an impact as a rookie. Not getting on the field until training camp at the earliest only makes that more difficult. If he's a nonfactor in Year 1, it's fair to wonder how this defense will be any better than the unit that held Cincinnati back last year.</p><p>The optics are generally pretty bad too. When was the last time an organization got put on blast by its first-round rookie?</p><p>"I'm not asking for nothing y'all (the team) has never done before," Stewart <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3298613" href="https://thescore.com/news/3298613">told reporters</a> last week. "But in y'all (the team's) case, y'all (the team) just want to win arguments (more) than winning more games."</p><p>Stewart is exactly right about his new employer. We're incessantly reminded that the NFL is, first and foremost, a business. However, plenty of teams have navigated that reality while also doing what it takes to put themselves in the best possible position to win.</p><p>The Bengals have never been part of that club. <p>The Baltimore Ravens have sat comfortably among the NFL's elite for most of the Lamar Jackson era. Yet all they have to show for it is a painful collection of playoff disappointments.</p><p>If there's ever been a time for that to change, it's now.</p><p>With each passing year, the challenge of getting through a gauntlet of AFC contenders is becoming more difficult. An equally daunting Super Bowl matchup awaits whoever emerges in 2025. But the Ravens have never been better positioned to get over the hump.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Last year's team had the makings of a champion before eventual heartbreak in Buffalo. Jackson took his well-established game to even greater heights as the Ravens offense posted the <a href="https://ftnfantasy.com/nfl/final-2024-dvoa-ratings">fourth-best rating</a> in the history of DVOA (defense-adjusted value over average), which dates back to 1978. Individually, Jackson became the first player to throw 40 touchdowns with fewer than five interceptions, and no other signal-caller has ever topped 4,000 passing yards while rushing for 800. MVP voting aside, Jackson produced one of the best seasons we've ever seen from a quarterback.</p><p>Derrick Henry's arrival provided a dream complement in the ground game, with the future Hall of Famer defying running back regression models to rack up 1,921 rushing yards and a league-best 16 touchdowns. Paired with Jackson, the superstar tandem created a pick-your-poison scenario in which opposing defenses would almost always be wrong.</p><p>We have every reason to expect more fireworks from Baltimore's offense in the season ahead. The Ravens are returning four of five starters on a solid offensive line to lead the way for Jackson and Henry. DeAndre Hopkins provides key depth for a strong group of pass-catchers, and coordinator Todd Monken is back after being passed over for head coaching jobs.</p><p>The ceiling for the defense is every bit as high.</p><p>Baltimore rebounded from a rocky start under first-year defensive coordinator Zach Orr to take flight over the second half of the 2024 season. Combined with the historic output they got from the offense, that run was a big reason I considered the Ravens <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3182070" href="https://thescore.com/news/3182070">the team to beat</a> when the playoffs got underway.</p><figure class="article-segment--table"><div class="table-responsive"><table>

</table></div></figure><p>The same unit now heads into training camp bolstered by three new potential game-changers: first-round safety Malaki Starks, second-round pass-rusher Mike Green, and two-time Pro Bowl cornerback Jaire Alexander. The latter <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3301580" href="https://thescore.com/news/3301580">joined</a> the club Wednesday after the Green Bay Packers recently released him.</p><p>Starks, an instinctive coverage defender out of Georgia, figures to be an excellent running mate for superstar safety Kyle Hamilton in the deep middle. Green was a consensus Day 1 talent who offers the explosiveness and rush arsenal to become the kind of consistent edge threat this defense has long been missing.</p><p>Alexander could be the cherry on top of an already excellent offseason for Baltimore's front office. There's certainly some risk involved, considering the move was only made possible by recent injury issues that limited him to back-to-back seven-game seasons in Green Bay. But the Ravens weren't exactly in dire need of another starter at cornerback. They're simply chasing the upside that comes with one of the most talented cover men in football.</p><p>Adding that kind of player next to first-team All-Pro Marlon Humphrey and sophomore breakout candidate Nate Wiggins - with Chidobe Awuzie sliding back into a high-level depth role - likely gives Baltimore the NFL's premier cornerback group. Given how the Ravens can dominate in the trenches, this defense could be even better than the one that terrorized opposing offenses down the stretch.</p><p>We may very well be looking at a juggernaut with top-three potential on both sides of the ball. All things considered, this might be the only roster in football that rivals the defending champion Philadelphia Eagles. Still, the Ravens know as well as anyone that none of it matters until you do something in the playoffs.</p><p>With Jackson's cap number jumping to $74.6 million in 2026, several impact players (Mark Andrews, Tyler Linderbaum, Odafe Oweh) nearing free agency, and Henry's inevitable drop-off, Baltimore may never get a better opportunity than this.</p><p>Now's the time for the Ravens to make it happen.</p><p><em>Dan Wilkins is theScore's senior NFL writer.</em></p>

The Cardinals sophomore likely won't need nearly as long before carving out his own path to superstardom. <p>The Pittsburgh Steelers finally have their guy.</p><p>If that feels like a weird thing to say about a declining 41-year-old quarterback who flirts with retirement annually, it is. Waiting nearly three months for his decision, and passing up any and all alternatives in the meantime, was an especially odd way for a competitive team to resolve its issues at the most important position in sports.</p><p>Nevertheless, the Aaron Rodgers experience - and everything that comes with it - will head to Pittsburgh. He <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3238555" href="https://thescore.com/news/3238555">reportedly</a> plans to join the team in advance of next week's mandatory minicamp. Now, the question is whether he'll prove to have been worth the wait.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>It's understandable that the Steelers felt the need to take a big swing in an attempt to address their quarterback woes. Pittsburgh's dreadful stretch at the position dates back to early 2019, when a season-ending elbow injury marked the beginning of the end for Ben Roethlisberger. The Steelers legend would return to play two more years, but he was never quite the same. And the quarterbacks they've run out since have been no better.</p><p>That underwhelming run has been a thorn in the side of an otherwise consistent team. Head coach Mike Tomlin has been able to extend his streak of 18 straight seasons without a losing record, but the postseason results have become predictable: four playoff berths in the last five years and four first-round exits (all by at least 11 points). The Steelers are hoping that a future Hall of Famer can be the one to help them get over that hump. Coming off a disaster two-year run in New York, is that even a realistic expectation for Rodgers?</p><p>The numbers say no.</p><p>It wasn't too long ago that Rodgers appeared to be on a Tom Brady-like path toward immortality, winning back-to-back MVP awards in 2020 and 2021, his age-37 and -38 seasons. </script></figure><p>In 2022, Rodgers threw for a career-worst 217.4 yards per game, set a (short-lived) personal low for passer rating (91.1), and served up 12 interceptions, the most since his first year as a starter in 2008. Those sudden signs of regression, along with a deteriorating relationship between player and team, made the Green Bay Packers more than happy to part ways and turn things over to Jordan Love.</p><p>The Jets, desperate to get a quarterback for the first time since, well … ever, were eager to bet Rodgers would bounce back. Any excitement over the blockbuster acquisition was sapped four plays into the 2023 opener when he went down with a torn Achilles. The good vibes ramped up ahead of last season, but it quickly became clear the Jets weren't getting the player they hoped for. Rodgers' output plummeted even further over the course of a chaotic 5-12 season.</p><p>Steelers fans searching for reasons to be optimistic about this move can point to the fact that Rodgers didn't have much help on the Jets. They dropped 39 of Rodgers' passes last season - 11 clear of the second-highest total among quarterbacks and the most for any passer since 2019, according to PFF. Pittsburgh's offseason trade to acquire DK Metcalf ensures Rodgers has at least one reliable weapon at receiver, but the team subsequently shipped George Pickens to Dallas.</p><p>New York's offensive line ranked 23rd in pass-block win rate last season, according to <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/41040723/2024-nfl-win-rates-top-teams-players-rankings">ESPN</a>, but Rodgers didn't deliver at a high level from a clean pocket either: He managed 0.01 expected points added per dropback on snaps where he didn't face pressure, tied for 34th among qualified passers.</p><p>Rodgers had some mildly encouraging moments down the stretch, highlighted by a four-touchdown finale against Miami, his first such performance since 2021. But there was also that horrific showing in Buffalo the week prior, where he put together the single worst quarterback performance of the entire season by EPA/dropback (-1.15).</p><p>Being another year removed from his Achilles injury could at least slow the deterioration of his fading movement skills. It's probably a positive that he's entering a situation where he'll have less control over scheme and personnel. And Tomlin manages big personalities like no other.</p><p>But we're still talking about a 41-year-old quarterback who's been in a noticeable decline for multiple seasons. Rodgers hasn't been among the top half of league starters since 2021, Roethlisberger's last year in Pittsburgh. The list of quarterbacks who have magically bucked a trend like that at this point of their career is nonexistent.</p><p>Even if the stars align for a major rebound, it's tough to imagine Rodgers' ceiling as anything higher than league-average quarterback play. That's not going to be enough for the Steelers to truly challenge the AFC elite in January.</p><p>Maybe Rodgers makes a big play here and there, and Pittsburgh stumbles into its first playoff victory since 2017. But with no real upside beyond that, all it would really accomplish is forestalling the inevitable: drafting a new franchise quarterback.</p><p>The Steelers better hope that none of the rookies they passed up in April come flying out of the gate this season. <p>The tush push lives on.</p><p>Things looked like they were heading in the opposite direction when the NFL, after an informal 16-16 vote in April, tabled discussions on a proposal from the Green Bay Packers to ban the play, planning to circle back in May. The language was revised in an effort to get at least eight more owners on board for the required three-quarters vote share. In the end, 10 teams still didn't see grounds for a rule change.</p><p>The dissenters are right.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Proponents of outlawing the Philadelphia Eagles' signature play consistently pointed to player safety as the reason. This would be an entirely different discussion if there was concrete data to support that sentiment, but there simply isn't. The NFL's internal numbers show a 0% injury rate on tush push plays, as <a href="https://x.com/jjones9/status/1894862540393320867">CBS Sports' Jonathan Jones</a> reported in February. Not a single injury has been attributed to the modified quarterback sneak since Philly first brought it into the mainstream on a regular basis in 2022.</p><p>The Eagles ran the play 108 times over the last three seasons, according to <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/44012335/nick-sirianni-says-unfair-eagles-tush-push-banned">ESPN research</a>. There have also been copycats around the league, with the Buffalo Bills leading the pack by running the play 55 times. Injury concerns based on hypotheticals don't hold much weight when that kind of sample size actually exists.</p><p>Officially, the proposal also cited pace of play as a consideration. However, the tush push doesn't take up any more time than your average QB sneak, so that must be a response to the Washington Commanders going offside four times in five plays in an attempt to jump a goal-line snap in the NFC title game. A defense desperately flailing because it can't stop an opponent seems like a weird reason to change a rule.</p><p>Realistically, the apparent push from the league office could be a sign that the NFL wanted to outlaw what's widely perceived as an automatic play. It's easy enough to understand how the league might consider that a damper on its overall product. But does the play really produce a predetermined outcome if other teams can't manage the same kind of success? That sounds more like a skill issue.</p><p>Any offense can easily replicate the mechanism of backfield players pushing the pile after the snap. Many have tried, with middling results. Yet Philly's accounted for 27 of the league's 52 tush push touchdowns over the last three seasons, according to ESPN. The Eagles and Bills have an overall conversion rate of 87%, while the rest of the league sits at 71%.</p><p>So what's the difference? Probably the fact that the push from the backfield isn't even one of the top three factors driving Philly's dominance on the play.</p><p>The sheer power of the NFL's premier offensive line is the biggest key; no other unit is as consistent at creating that kind of movement off the ball. Coaching is also crucial: The innovative design and technique are a credit to Nick Sirianni and legendary offensive line guru Jeff Stoutland.</p><p>"I can't tell you how many times we practice the snap, we practice the play," Sirianni said at the combine. "We work really, really hard, and our guys are talented at this play. And so it's a little insulting to say we're good at it so it's automatic. We work really hard at it."</p><p>And then there's the added benefit of a powerhouse ball carrier who can squat 600 pounds. Jalen Hurts is a unique quarterback when it comes to leg drive. More often than not, he's getting the line to gain before the push from behind even happens.</p><p>All of this to say: The Eagles would dominate short yardage with or without the ability to run the full tush push. Hurts and the offensive line had a 92.9% success rate on traditional QB sneaks in 2021 before introducing the now-polarizing version, according to <a href="https://x.com/JeffKerrCBS/status/1906525672056451313">Jeff Kerr of CBS Sports</a>. And now the Eagles' backfield has Saquon Barkley, the NFL's premier running back, coming off a 2,005-yard season.</p><p>The play's survival should be regarded as a big win for logic and - most importantly - competition. With no history of related injuries to back up the apparent safety concerns, the rest of the league coming together to implement a ban would have looked a lot like an attempt to rein in a juggernaut Super Bowl champion.</p><p>The NFL has avoided that slippery slope for at least another year. Now teams can go back to the drawing board and take the old-fashioned approach: actually figuring out how to stop an opponent's play. <p>The pressure is on for Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch.</p><p>Brock Purdy's reported five-year, $265-million extension involves plenty of layers. The numbers, though staggering, shouldn't come as much of a surprise. Any young quarterback who's seen as a long-term starter has the leverage to top $50 million per season. And the San Francisco 49ers were never going to allow the cost of business to send them back to the drawing board at the most important position on the field.</p><p>Purdy may be several steps below the NFL's truly elite passers, but he's not a quarterback who's exclusively being propped up by Kyle Shanahan's system. He's mastered it, and that's value in itself. This payday was inevitable from the moment the former Mr. Irrelevant selection led the way to a Super Bowl appearance as a sophomore.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>The real question is whether the 49ers can build another championship-caliber roster with a contract like this on the books. It certainly won't be easy.</p><p>First and foremost, there's a ton of work to be done. San Francisco had to reset its salary-cap situation after years of going all-in to chase a title, as well as in preparation of the looming Purdy contract. The result: a mass exodus of talent on both sides of the ball.</p><p>Dre Greenlaw, Talanoa Hufanga, Charvarius Ward, Aaron Banks, and Jaylon Moore all found new homes in free agency. Deebo Samuel and Jordan Mason were traded, and the defensive line was left depleted after Javon Hargrave, Maliek Collins, and Leonard Floyd were released.</p><p>Superstars remain, but Nick Bosa, Fred Warner, Christian McCaffrey, George Kittle, Trent Williams, and Brandon Aiyuk are all on top-of-the-market deals at their respective positions. Purdy joining the mix - and doing so with the biggest contract of the bunch - ensures there won't be much financial flexibility. That makes it all the more imperative for the 49ers to consistently find cheap talent in the draft.</p><p>Shanahan and Lynch, like anyone else, tend to run hot and cold when it comes to that aspect of team building. They undoubtedly deserve credit for drafting many of the top talents listed above, thus laying the foundation for an outstanding run of success, but recent seasons have been a bit more of an adventure.</p><p>The Trey Lance fiasco in 2021 was the start of a bizarre stretch. Getting nothing out of a No. 3 overall selection is bad enough, but trading multiple first-rounders to do so made it hurt even more. First-round receiver Ricky Pearsall showed some flashes down the stretch, Renardo Green looks like a potential starter at corner, Dominick Puni was an instant-impact player on the offensive line, and Malik Mustapha is a tone-setter flying downhill from safety. That could be an important group for the future.</p><p>There's a lot to like about what San Francisco did in this year's draft, too. The defensive line should be much improved against the run, as Mykel Williams, Alfred Collins, and CJ West all have the potential for immediate contributions. Williams, the No. 11 overall pick, also offers some untapped potential as a power-rusher, making him an intriguing long-term running mate for Bosa.</p><p>This year's class did continue San Francisco's trend of curious third-round decisions, though. Nick Martin and Upton Stout were surprising picks at their respective draft slots. Martin, selected No. 75 overall, was the 170th-ranked player on the <a href="https://www.nflmockdraftdatabase.com/big-boards/2025/consensus-big-board-2025">NFL Mock Draft Database</a> consensus big board. Stout, selected No. 100 overall, was 175th.</p><p>Good class or bad, the 49ers are making a habit of going way off the board on Day 2. In 2022, it was running back Tyrion Davis-Price in the third round. He saw 40 carries over two years before he was cut. In 2023, it was Jake Moody (a kicker!) and blocking tight end Cameron Latu. The 49ers are bringing in competition for Moody this offseason, and Latu was cut after one year.</p><p>Every front office has its fair share of misses, and the 49ers have had enough hits over the years that their whiffs weren't too costly. But the financial weight of Purdy's contract on an already top-heavy roster makes the margin for error decidedly narrow.</p><p>Shanahan and Lynch need to be at their absolute best for the team to overcome the new challenge of building around an expensive quarterback. Draft well enough, as they've done at times throughout their shared tenure, and the Super Bowl window doesn't have to close. <p>The NFL officially unveiled the <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3285402" href="https://thescore.com/news/3285402">2025 schedule</a> Wednesday night. Opponents have been locked in since the end of last season, but the layout of the games matters, too.</p><p>Here are a few key takeaways from the announcement.</p><h3>Starting with a bang</h3><p>The Super Bowl champion Eagles hosting the division-rival Cowboys in the Thursday night opener was a no-brainer. And that's only the appetizer for what figures to be an electric opening weekend.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>The rest of the prime-time matchups are every bit as good as you'd expect. The Chargers always play the Chiefs well, and they'll get their shot at the defending AFC champs on Friday night in Brazil. The Ravens get an immediate opportunity for playoff redemption against the Bills on Sunday night, while Ben Johnson and the new-look Bears are immediately put to the test in hosting the Vikings on Monday night.</p><p>Lions-Packers is the main draw of the Sunday afternoon slate, but there are also some less obvious games with some juicy storylines. The Jets open the season against the Steelers, who are still expected to sign Aaron Rodgers. If the future Hall of Famer's disaster tenure in New York wasn't enough to set the stage for that one, his candid recollection of a meeting with new head coach Aaron Glenn should do the trick. Consider it a two-sided revenge game.</p><p>Elsewhere, the Patriots kick off the Mike Vrabel era at home against the Raiders. Tom Brady will be in the broadcast booth somewhere else, but Las Vegas opening the year in New England after an offseason in which the organization was reshaped in his vision is a pretty cool tidbit. That unit only got better this offseason. Ex-49ers Dre Greenlaw and Talanoa Hufanga can be true game-changers when healthy.</p><p>And while most were expecting Denver to upgrade the offense in the first round of this year's draft, passing on Jahdae Barron at No. 20 wasn't going to fly. The versatile Texas defensive back, fresh off a Jim Thorpe Award, now joins Patrick Surtain Jr. and Riley Moss in rounding out the league's most exciting young cornerback room.</p><p>A date with this defense could be a rude introduction to the NFL for the Titans' No. 1 overall pick.</p><h3>Early Super Bowl rematch</h3><p>Schedule-makers wasted no time getting us a Super Bowl rematch, as the Chiefs will host the Eagles in Week 2. Oddly, it'll be a late-afternoon game instead of a prime-time affair.</p><p>Kansas City will be eager to get one back after an embarrassing result on football's biggest stage. The Eagles losing some of the key defensive-line pieces that terrorized Patrick Mahomes will surely be a factor here, as would the healthy return of Chiefs wideout Rashee Rice.</p><p>But Philadelphia still has the most talented roster in football, and it may not be all that close. But a schedule like this won't do them any favors in the short term, and it's easy to see how that could eventually lead to the turnover we were all expecting in January.</p><h3>Now or never</h3><p>The Bengals have been notoriously slow starters throughout Zac Taylor's six years as head coach, posting a 1-11 record across the first two weeks of the season. The only win was an overtime victory over the Vikings back in 2021.</p><p>Kicking off the 2025 campaign with games against the Browns and Jaguars should give Cincinnati every opportunity to buck that trend, but the same could've been said about previous cupcake matchups. Last year's season-opening loss to a dreadful Patriots team was ultimately the difference in the Bengals missing out on the playoffs despite a hot finish.</p><p>Starting fast will be especially important this fall, as Cincy's next four games come against the Vikings, Broncos, Lions, and Packers. And three of the four are on the road. Recent head-scratchers include the post-Drew Brees Saints getting blown out at home against the Bills in 2021 and the pre-Jayden Daniels Commanders barely putting up a fight in Dallas in 2023, and the Giants had no business on that stage last year. We'll go ahead and blame the NFL for forcing the nation to start their holiday festivities by watching Matt Eberflus' historically inept clock management, even if the Bears were supposed to be mildly interesting in 2024.</p><p>Anything can happen, but the on-paper matchups suggest that there won't be many fans prioritizing naps this year. Packers-Lions is a great way to start the day, Chiefs-Cowboys is as marquee as marquee gets, and Bengals-Ravens always provides fireworks. And then we get Bears-Eagles on Black Friday, putting one of the league's most exciting up-and-coming teams against the defending champs.</p><p>The Cowboys also getting some Christmas Day shine is probably a little much for the average fan to stomach, but it's tough to argue with featuring America's Team against the suddenly fun Commanders. Lions-Vikings in the late afternoon slot should have plenty of playoff implications, and the same can be said about Broncos-Chiefs as the night cap. All in all, no complaints about the holiday scheduling this year.</p><h3>WTFalcons?</h3><p>Counting up prime-time games is one of the big draws of schedule release day. Fans want to feel as though their favorite team is getting an appropriate amount of respect on a national level, and it's always good to make sure that we're not getting too much of a team that doesn't deserve it.</p><p>The Chiefs lead the way with seven such games this year. Fair enough. The Cowboys have six, because of course they do. And then there's a big group of teams with five. The Eagles, Lions, Commanders, Bills, Chargers, and 49ers all make sense for various reasons. The Dolphins earning a spot in that group is pretty weird. The Falcons doing so is downright bizarre.</p><p>In all fairness, this has the potential to be a pretty fun season for Atlanta. The front office was aggressive in addressing the defense, and it's possible Michael Penix Jr. has the offense poised to take off in Year 2. But this is the Falcons we're talking about here - a team that hasn't won double-digit games since 2017. Everyone is used to the one-off matchups by now. The Vikings playing consecutive weeks across the pond is a new one.</p><p>Minnesota will meet Pittsburgh in Dublin in Week 4 before making the quick trip to London for a game against Cleveland. On first glance, it seems like a brutal schedule for the Vikings. But we should note they're officially the visiting team for both games. That means two of their nine road contests are at a neutral site, and they don't lose any of their eight home games.</p><p>Plus, if you're going to make the trip across that many time zones, you might as well get multiple games out of it, right? If nothing else, that should give the Vikings a major advantage over the Browns in Week 5. From there, they'll come home to a bye week before heading into a gauntlet stretch: vs. Eagles, at Chargers, at Lions, vs. Ravens.</p><h3>Late-night doubleheaders</h3><p>As someone who'll take all the standalone games we can get, it gives me great pleasure to share that the NFL is bringing back the late-night Monday games for the first time since 2020.</p><p>Two of the four Monday night doubleheaders on the schedule will have kickoffs at 7 p.m. ET and 10 p.m. ET. Chargers-Raiders is in that extra-late spot in Week 2, while Texans-Seahawks gets it in Week 7.</p><p>The other two doubleheaders are sticking to the NFL's more recent format, with kickoffs an hour apart, so this isn't exactly a full shift back to the old days. Perhaps it's the NFL's way of testing which way works best for viewership. The late-night spot does complicate scheduling matters, as it requires the home team to be on the west coast. But the additional standalone is a great way to cap the week. Plus, overlapping Monday night contests defeat the purpose of prime-time games, don't they?</p><h3>Chargers' social team undefeated</h3><p>Is the NFL's annual schedule release a little overhyped? Probably. It's not like we didn't already know who everyone was playing. But this is also the Super Bowl for social media teams around the league. Team announcements are getting more and more creative every year. And while this is hardly an official count, the Chargers have to be the five-time defending champs at this point.</p><p>This year's schedule reveal was done in Minecraft. Familiarity with the video game is not a prerequisite for enjoyment here. Pay close enough attention and you'll see some truly incredible potshots taken at each of L.A.'s opponents.</p><figure class="article-segment--embed"><blockquote class="twitter-tweet">

Once considered a potential No. 1 pick, at least in media circles, the Colorado quarterback appeared destined for a bit of a slide when word emerged that teams weren't nearly as bullish.</p><p>Nobody could have predicted the way things unfolded Thursday night. And then Friday. And then Saturday. Eventually, some of us were probably wondering whether he'd be drafted at all. Sanders did finally get the call, going to the Browns in the fifth round, 144th overall. The most staggering fall in NFL draft history makes Aaron Rodgers' green-room wait seem like a walk in the park.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>The reason we couldn't have seen it coming? Sanders' draft stock appears to have been complicated by factors beyond what those of us on the outside can see on the field.</p><p>"Throughout the pre-draft process, Shedeur Sanders very much proceeded as if he was dictating to clubs where he was going to go," <a href="https://x.com/TomPelissero/status/1916139354897993920">NFL Network's Tom Pelissero</a> reported Saturday.</p><p>Pelissero added, "At the combine, it is now well-documented, some of his formal interviews did not go well. One assistant coach told me, in all his years, it was the worst formal interview he'd ever been through. People said that Shedeur was trying to dictate how he wanted things to go and made them feel small." </p><p>That would be one thing if teams saw him as a Day 1 starter at quarterback. Evidently, they did not. So one after another passed, 143 times.</p><p>None of it matters now. Sanders will set out to make teams look foolish for passing on him. But it's fair to wonder whether he has much of a chance in Cleveland. He'll face an uphill battle to get on the field as a rookie, as the team has also made investments in Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, and third-round pick Dillon Gabriel.</p><p>Plus, the Browns picking up a 2026 first-rounder in their trade down with the Jaguars gives them all the draft capital they'll need to get one of the top quarterbacks in next year's class. It really is one of the most fascinating draft trades we've ever seen.</p><p>The Jaguars, frankly, are not remotely close to contention. And even if they were, trading a future first-rounder to move up three spots for anyone other than a quarterback generally could, and should, be seen as reckless. But this is a unique situation. Travis Hunter isn't your average non-quarterback.</p><p>The Colorado star offers legitimate Pro Bowl upside at both receiver and cornerback, two valuable positions. He truly is unlike any player this league has ever seen. There was some question whether NFL teams would allow him to play both ways, with the thought being that such an unprecedented workload could impact his durability. The new Jaguars staff appears intent on taking advantage of his two-way skill set.</p><p>It's a fitting first move for new general manager James Gladstone, who joined the Jaguars this offseason after learning under Les Snead and Sean McVay in Los Angeles. You may remember that the Rams won a Super Bowl while trading away one premium pick after another.</p><p>"I've probably got some familiarity with the '(F--k) them picks' sort of process," Gladstone told reporters Thursday night. "For our fans, I'll tell you, don't be scared. This is something I'm uniquely positioned to navigate."</p><p>Is it risky? Sure. But you have to love the aggressiveness in this case. The role reversal may prove to be short-lived.</p><p>The first offseason under Mike Vrabel's watch isn't even complete, and it's becoming increasingly easy to see how this team might soon return to a competitive level. Free agency got things started in the right direction, with the Patriots flexing their salary-cap muscle by adding four impact starters on defense and at least a few more on offense, including new No. 1 receiver Stefon Diggs. Campbell fills a major need on the offensive line, while Henderson provides both big-play ability and a rare level of pass-protection skills for a rookie back. Williams is a sudden athlete who runs good routes and has the ability to take the top off the defense. He'll operate as the No. 2 target alongside Diggs for now, and he's got sneaky WR1 upside long term.</p><p>The next four selections have plenty of potential, too. Wilson is a supremely athletic center who should be pushing Garrett Bradbury for the starting job before long. Woodson is a versatile safety talent who was one of our <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3269279" href="https://thescore.com/news/3269279">hidden gems</a> in this class, while both Farmer and Swinson offer some intriguing pass-rush upside for their respective draft slots on Day 3.</p><p>All things considered, it doesn't get much better than this. The outstanding haul earned the Patriots an A+ in our final <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3264295" href="https://thescore.com/news/3264295">draft grades</a>, putting them in a class of their own this year.</p><p>A poor run of drafting in the latter stages of the Bill Belichick era had put this team in a real hole. Getting the quarterback last year was a big step in the right direction. </script></figure><h3>Biggest steal</h3><p><strong>Simmons falls to Chiefs</strong></p><p>Josh Simmons was always bound to slide at least a bit in the first round, as a torn patellar tendon suffered in October complicated his draft evaluation. Teams will probably regret letting him get all the way to the Chiefs at the end of the first round. If healthy, he had a real case to be the No. 1 offensive lineman in this draft, as the Ohio State standout is far and away the best pass-protector of the group. And while Kansas City may have to be patient, all reports suggest his recovery is going well. Adding this kind of talent at left tackle, be it for this season or next, will address one of the few problem areas that has given opposing teams hope against the Chiefs.</p><h3>Worst draft decision</h3><p><strong>WYD, Falcons?</strong></p><p>The Jaguars got a pass for trading a future first-round pick for a non-quarterback, but the Falcons get no such consideration. While we can all appreciate the effort to double down on edge rushers after getting Jalon Walker at No. 15, giving up their top pick in 2026 to move up 20 spots for James Pearce Jr. is easily the worst move of the weekend. That's no slight to Pearce, either. The Tennessee product offers plenty of pass-rush juice, and he's a perfectly fine value at his draft slot. But giving up a future first to sneak back into the end of Day 1 is awful asset management. The bizarre move spoils what was otherwise an exceptional draft haul for Atlanta.</p><h3>Early OROY pick</h3><p><strong>Kaleb Johnson, RB, Steelers</strong></p><p>Johnson felt like a boom-or-bust pick heading into this draft. He wasn't going to be a good fit everywhere, but an outside-zone system would allow him to translate the success he enjoyed at Iowa. Pittsburgh provides that ideal landing spot from a scheme perspective, and the free-agent departure of Najee Harris leaves a massive early-down workload up for grabs. While it's certainly more of a long-shot pick for OROY, Johnson should be in a position to put up big numbers as part of a Steelers offense that will always remain committed to the run game.</p><h3>Early DROY pick</h3><p><strong>Abdul Carter, EDGE, Giants</strong></p><p>Maybe this one is too obvious. It's just tough to pick anyone else considering the talent and situation Carter is stepping into. The Giants have their fair share of shortcomings, but this won't be a case where a top pick is asked to do it all himself up front. Carter will have the luxury of working opposite Brian Burns, with Dexter Lawrence and sleeper third-rounder Darius Alexander on the inside. Barring a trade, 2022 first-rounder Kayvon Thibodeaux will be in the mix, too. That's a ridiculous collection of talent up front. Opposing offenses won't be able to send slide-and-chip help at Carter all game, potentially clearing the way for some major production right out of the gate.</p><h3>Free agency/trade fallout</h3><p>As of Monday, remaining free agents will no longer be a part of next year's compensation pick formula. You can bet that a few of the more savvy front offices were waiting on that date before dipping back into the market and trying to scoop up some of the established veterans still looking for a new home.</p><p>The Bears, for example, could turn to free agency after missing out on top running backs in the draft. JK Dobbins is still available after a breakout season with the Chargers, and Nick Chubb would be an interesting addition a year removed from his major knee injury.</p><p>Keep an eye on the trade market, too. There weren't many veterans on the move on draft weekend, but talks will likely pick up now that teams have a better idea of roster needs. On the running back front, <a href="https://x.com/JosinaAnderson/status/1915460243334615228">NFL insider Josina Anderson</a> reported this week there's been talk of the Jets making Breece Hall available. Elsewhere, the Dolphins are exploring trade options with Jalen Ramsey, Jaire Alexander could be on the way out of Green Bay, and the Steelers reportedly received calls about George Pickens.</p><h3>2026 lookahead</h3><p>Already getting curious about the 2026 class? Most had Denver looking at playmakers, but a potential top-10 talent is too good to pass up that late. Barron's playmaking skills and versatility should make him an excellent addition to an already strong secondary. Plus, the Broncos got a really fun pair of playmakers on Day 2. Harvey is an explosive back who's always making defenders miss. Bryant flew under the radar due to his average speed, but his route-running, ball skills, and run-after-catch ability should still make him a productive pro. Jones could also emerge as a key piece of the pass-rush rotation with some more development. He's still working his way back from a torn patellar tendon suffered in October, but he's the best pass-protector in this class. Simmons probably would've been a top-10 pick were it not for the injury. Norman-Lott and Gillotte provide some exciting pass-rush upside, and Williams is a great fit for a defense that loves to have its cornerbacks play press coverage. And it's easy to see Royals, my No. 7 receiver in this class, becoming a productive player. </script></figure><p><strong>Grade: B+</strong></p><p>There's always a case to be made against drafting a running back early, but Jeanty is a special case. The unique combination of vision, contact balance, and creativity made him my No. 3 overall player in this class. Bech is a physical wideout who should be a great addition to the receiver room, and Porter is an elite athlete with the size and ball skills to make him a playmaker in the secondary. Keep an eye on Thornton, too. He'll need to expand his route tree coming from that Tennessee offense, but there aren't many 6-foot-5 receivers with 4.3 speed. His ability to stretch the field could be a nice fit with Geno Smith. Picking Hampton felt like a bit of a misstep with so many needs elsewhere and so many good players available at running back. The subsequent selections helped balance things out, though. Harris can be the big-play receiver they needed on the boundary to complement Ladd McConkey. Caldwell is a high-end run defender, and Kennard could provide some pass-rush upside in sub-packages. Getting Higgins and Noel on Day 2 is a nice haul to address the receiver depth after a tough season for that group. Higgins is a big body who runs good routes and can make plays above the rim. Noel is a smaller, more explosive target who creates easy separation. Ersery is also an interesting addition to the new-look offensive line room, bringing a combination of size, power, and athleticism at tackle. Trading up for Marks in the fourth round is a strange one here. That's no slight against the USC product, but giving up a 2026 third-rounder feels unnecessary in a stacked running back class. The position was the most glaring need on their roster heading in, and Warren is a physical, do-it-all playmaker who can also contribute as an in-line blocker. Tuimoloau is a talented power rusher who flew under the radar as part of this edge group. His game should translate well, giving Indy a long-term running mate for 2024 first-rounder Laiatu Latu. Walley is an exciting sleeper in the secondary, and Travis could be a candidate to challenge for one of the starting guard spots up front. And keep an eye on Giddens. Parting with future first-rounders, among other assets, for non-QBs is generally not a good idea. But this is a true unicorn prospect we're talking about. Hunter's got legitimate All-Pro upside at both receiver and corner. The Ransaw pick was a little early, and it would have been nice to see the Jaguars dip into a loaded defensive tackle class to address their needs up front. But Milum has starter potential if he moves into guard, and Tuten is a big-play machine at running back. Could Tuten be this year's version of Bucky Irving for Liam Coen's offense? The Titans had to take a swing on a quarterback, and the Miami star has the arm talent, athleticism, and creativity to be a high-end starter. Oladejo and Dike feel like reaches in their respective draft slots, slightly weighing down the overall grade. However, moving down in the second round to replace the third-round pick lost in the L'Jarius Sneed trade was a good move. Winston should be a significant upgrade on the back end of the defense, and Ayomanor gives Ward an athletic, competitive receiver to develop alongside in the years to come. Green fills a big need on the edge, and the expected first-round pick was available on Day 2 because he's twice been accused of sexual assault. Jones is a talented lineman who could have some starter upside with a transition inside to guard, and Buchanan's coverage skills at linebacker made him one of my hidden gems of this class. But it's not so easy to get on board with how they went about their business. Stewart is a project player up front. He's one of the best athletes at the position, but he's got a long way to go before he puts it all together. Knight is a solid run defender, but he doesn't quite offer the same upside in the pass game. And Fairchild in the third round isn't great value. Passing on Travis Hunter by trading out of the No. 2 spot is a questionable move; the two-way Colorado star truly is that special. That being said, it's easy enough to understand why Cleveland preferred the picks haul. Jacksonville's 2026 first-rounder could help the Browns get in position for the quarterback of their choice in next year's draft. And it's easy to be excited about what they did with this year's collection of picks. Graham, my No. 4 overall player, is an elite talent on the interior defensive front. He'll be a lot of fun lined up next to Myles Garrett. Schwesinger is this draft's best coverage linebacker, Judkins and Sampson can provide a true thunder-and-lightning combination in the backfield, and Fannin is a unique run-after-catch playmaker at tight end. And then there's Sanders. The Browns taking Gabriel two rounds earlier is definitely strange, but we'll overlook that for now. Sanders could compete to start right away, potentially making him one of the draft's biggest steals. Harmon fills a pressing need on the defensive line, providing a power skill set equally effective against the run and pass. The second-round pick was traded for DK Metcalf. Johnson's a perfect fit for this Steelers offense after dominating as an outside-zone runner at Iowa; he should immediately step in as the lead back. Sawyer could also prove to be a nice value pick in the fourth round, as he's always managed to produce despite an average athletic profile and lack of length.
