<p>The season's final major is upon us, with the shores of Northern Ireland hosting the Open Championship at the iconic Royal Portrush.</p><p>Rory McIlroy looks to exorcise the demons of 2019 when he missed the cut at his local event by adding to his Masters win with another epic victory. While he's one of the top golfers to watch this week, he's not one of the top two players we expect to perform well on the links this time out.</p><p>Here's the top 20 players for the 153rd Open Championship.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p><strong>20. Justin Thomas</strong></p><p>If this were a PGA TOUR event, Thomas would be one of the top names on the list. However, it's a major championship, which means he's lucky to find himself at No. 20. When the golf gets tougher, Thomas has essentially been a complete no-show. His usually elite ball-striking has disappeared in the biggest events, as the two-time PGA champ has lost strokes off the tee and on approach over the three majors this season. That likely doesn't bode well for the challenging test at Portrush.</p><p><strong>19. Adam Scott</strong></p><p>Scott threatened to win the U.S. Open for 63 holes at Oakmont before fading in horrendous conditions late Sunday. The Aussie clearly thrives in links golf, nabbing a top-25 finish in almost half of his 24 starts in The Open. His brilliant driving should put him in a prime position to attack at Portrush. Whether Scott can do so for four straight days at age 45 is the question he needs to answer.</p><p><strong>18. Young has yet to win on the PGA TOUR, but he raises his game in majors - this won't be the last time we say that on this list.</p><p><strong>17. Robert MacIntyre</strong></p><p>The Scottish star feels right at home across the Irish Sea, boasting a T-6th finish in The Open six years ago at Portrush. MacIntyre nearly nipped the U.S. Open in June, only to fall just short to J.J. Spaun's late heroics. He showed at last year's Scottish Open that he can rise to the occasion, and nobody would be shocked if he seizes the moment Sunday in Northern Ireland.</p><p><strong>16. Patrick Reed</strong></p><p>Is Reed the 16th-best golfer in the field this week at Portrush? Probably not. However, is a motivated Reed looking to make a shock return to the Ryder Cup team in two months a threat at The Open? Absolutely. Reed's best showing in an Open Championship came six years ago at this venue, and he enters showing some solid form over the past three months. A course like Portrush places a premium on short-game acumen, something Reed excels at as well as anybody in the world.</p><p><strong>15. Jordan Spieth</strong></p><p>Only 15 golfers worldwide have gained more total strokes than Spieth over the last six months, according to Data Golf. He's also been a menace on links courses, posting seven straight top-25 finishes in The Open, including a win in 2017 and a runner-up in 2021. So why isn't Spieth higher on this list? He withdrew from his last start and welcomed his third child to the family last week. Any parent will tell you that's probably not the most productive way to prepare for a big event at work.</p><p><strong>14. Henley winning would be less of a long shot, as the Georgia alum has quietly been one of the best players on the PGA TOUR the past couple of years. He finished fifth in last year's Open Championship and nabbed a solid 10th-place showing at the U.S. Open at Oakmont.</p><p><strong>13. Hideki Matsuyama</strong></p><p>Trouble lurks around Portrush for anybody straying even remotely off course, with thick gorse and internal out-of-bounds providing major challenges for the field. That leads us to one of the best ball-strikers in Matsuyama. The Japanese star is ranked 20th in the world in strokes gained: tee-to-green over the past six months and possesses the type of elite chipping skills needed in links golf.</p><p><strong>12. Ludvig Aberg</strong></p><p>Early returns on Aberg's brief major career suggest he's either threatening to win or packing up the car early Friday. Seven majors in, the Swede has three top-12 finishes against four missed cuts, including this year's PGA Championship and U.S. Open. Which Aberg are we getting this week at Portrush? An eighth-place finish last week in Scotland points toward the one who contends down the stretch.</p><p><strong>11. Brooks Koepka</strong></p><p>Koepka finally showed signs of major life with a 12th-place finish in June's U.S. Open after missing the cut in the Masters and PGA Championship. His form has been spotty on LIV Golf, but that rarely means anything for one of the best major players of his generation. While golf is largely an individual endeavour, Koepka has the best "teammate" this week with caddie Ricky Elliott. The veteran looper hails from Portrush and got his start caddying at the historic course. That knowledge likely helped Kopeka to a T-4 finish six years ago at the same track.</p><p><strong>10. Collin Morikawa</strong></p><p>Morikawa's form has taken a dip as he speed dates caddies looking for someone who fits his eye. Last week was the first in a two-week pact with veteran Billy Foster, but the new partnership flamed out with a missed cut. Foster is as experienced as anybody in the game - something that should help Morikawa at Portrush. One area that needs drastic improvement is putting. Morikawa has lost strokes on the greens in four straight tournaments, including a dismal performance at Oakmont in the last major. His minus-2.17 strokes gained: putting was the worst showing of his major career.</p><p><strong>9. Young may be the newcomer on that block, but Fleetwood is absolutely the OG. Despite the Englishman constantly being in contention in golf's biggest events, he remains snakebitten in getting things across the line. That includes a solo second in 2019 at Portrush as the only man to finish within seven shots of Shane Lowry.</p><p><strong>8. Shane Lowry</strong></p><p>The hero at Portrush six years ago returns with much fanfare, with Lowry's major triumph easily one of the most popular in recent memory. A second Claret Jug hitting Lowry's locker would shock no one. The Irishman comes to The Open having gained the 10th-most strokes worldwide in the last six months. Expect the crowd support to be loud and boisterous again for the lad who grew up just 170 miles from Portrush.</p><p><strong>7. Tyrrell Hatton</strong></p><p>It's hard not to love Hatton's chances this week, considering the Englishman is fresh off his best career major finish in June at the U.S. Open. He also posted his top showing ever in the Open Championship last time out at Portrush in 2019. Although he's got a volatile demeanour on the course, Hatton has thrived in links-style golf, scoring three victories in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship played at St. Andrews.</p><p><strong>6. Xander Schauffele</strong></p><p>The defending champion comes to Portrush sitting 138th in putting, a steep drop from the 12th-place finish in his career-defining season last year. That's the major difference in Schauffele's brilliant 2024 run compared to 2025. However, there's reason for optimism in Schauffele's camp, with a T-12 finish at the U.S. Open and an eighth-place result at last week's Scottish Open now on his resume. Those results suggest he might be trending toward the form that won him two majors last year.</p><p><strong>5. Bryson DeChambeau</strong></p><p>It might be good, it might be bad, but either way, DeChambeau is guaranteed to be a box office draw. DeChambeau is one of the most entertaining golfers on the planet on a week-to-week basis, and the unpredictability of the Open Championship only heightens that spectacle. But his scientific approach thrives on controlled conditions, something the season's final major doesn't offer. The numbers back that theory up with a T-8 in 2022 being the only top-30 finish of DeChambeau's major career. Watching the LIV star try to overpower Portrush will be must-see TV - a strategy that'll likely either result in a win or a missed cut and nothing in between.</p><p><strong>4. He's a hot putting week away from cashing that in with a first major victory.</p><p><strong>3. Rory McIlroy</strong></p><p>Imagine telling McIlroy at the start of the season that the pressure would somehow be off his shoulders heading into The Open at Portrush. That's essentially what the Masters victory has done for the 36-year-old, making things slightly less stressful at the tournament played just 60 miles from his hometown. McIlroy's first Open at Portrush - a place he broke the course record as a 16-year-old - got off to a disaster with an opening-round 79 dooming him to a missed cut. It's hard to see that happening twice, and it would be stunning if he weren't in the mix come Sunday.</p><p><strong>2. Scottie Scheffler</strong></p><p>Grading on the immense Scheffler scale, the Open Championship has traditionally been his "worst" major. Considering a 23rd-place showing in 2023 was the poorest finish in his career at the event, that's all relative. It seems the only thing that baffles the brilliant Scheffler these days is a bad bounce or a ball not reacting as he expected. That's frankly the essence of links golf - something Scheffler still has to show he can handle. If he figures that out, it would likely result in a runaway win given how exceptionally he's striking the ball lately.</p><p><strong>1. Jon Rahm</strong></p><p>Rahm has quietly been one of the best major players in the world over the last calendar year, posting four straight top-15 finishes. That streak includes a T-7 at last year's Open Championship and a T-7 at June's U.S. Open. Fresh off nearly winning his home event on LIV in Spain last weekend, Rahm comes to Portrush in full flight. He grabbed a T-11 finish in 2019 at Portrush and has shone bright in previous events across Ireland in his career. It feels like it's Rahm's time to re-establish himself in the argument for the planet's best male golfer.</p>

<p><a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///pga/players/599" href="https://thescore.com/pga/players/599">Rory McIlroy</a> couldn't wait to tee it up at home in Northern Ireland on Monday, hitting Royal Portrush for an early practice round just hours after his runner-up finish at the Scottish Open.</p><p>The Holywood native was off at 7:00 a.m. local time - over 90 minutes before any other player - to get his first look at the course since he missed the cut at the 2019 Open Championship.</p><p>McIlroy - who famously broke the course record at Portrush as a 16-year-old - hit his opening shot out of bounds in 2019 and trudged along to a first-round 79 before rebounding with an electric 65 in Round 2. That push ultimately fell one shot of the cutline, but the chase captivated the crowd.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>The newly crowned Masters champion discussed that experience Monday when meeting with the media and pointed to some lessons he learned. </p><p>"You get to an Open, it's a major championship, everything that comes along with it, and I just think that that feeling, the walk to the first tee and then that ovation, I was still a little surprised and a little taken aback. Like, geez, these people really want me to win," <a href="https://x.com/theopen/status/1944766687611355306?s=46&amp;t=tz5gD5QMDqV_qrw4oZWkJw">McIlroy said</a>. "I think that brought its own sort of pressure and more internally from myself, and not really wanting to let people down.</p><p>"I guess it's just something I didn't mentally prepare for that day or that week. But I learned pretty quickly that one of my challenges, especially in a week like this, is controlling myself and controlling that battle."</p><p>While McIlroy left Portrush full of disappointment, he returns having become just the sixth man to complete the greatest achievement in professional golf - the career grand slam.</p><p>His Masters win capped an incredible start to the 2025 season, with victories at Pebble Beach and TPC Sawgrass also on the resume. However, since claiming the green jacket, McIlroy has struggled to find the same motivation with his career Mona Lisa complete.</p><p>"I think everyone could see over the last couple of months how I struggled with that. I've done something that I've told everyone that I wanted to do, but then it's like I still feel like I have a lot more to give," he said. "I've alluded to this, but I probably just didn't give myself enough time to let it all sink in. But that's the nature of professional golf. They do a very good job of keeping you on the hamster wheel, and you feel like it's hard to get off at times."</p><p>Should McIlroy triumph at Portrush this week, he'd become just the 15th man to win at least six major championships.</p>

To have my own moment like that at this championship, I'll never forget this moment for the rest of my life."</p><p>Spaun bogeyed five of his first six holes Sunday and made the turn with a 5-over 40. He was seemingly out of the tournament until a 97-minute weather delay soaked Oakmont with torrential rains. While the rest of the field struggled after the restart of play, Spaun thrived in the wet conditions and charged to the title in epic fashion.</p>

Spaun</a> is the U.S. Open champion thanks to one of the most insane final-round turnarounds in tournament history.</p><p>Spaun began the day just one back, but made five bogeys en route to an opening-nine 40 on Sunday. However, a 97-minute weather delay allowed him to reset, and he flipped the script with a back-nine 32 to erase a four-shot deficit standing on the 10th tee.</p><p>While Spaun was thriving in rain-soaked conditions at Oakmont Country Club, the rest of the field was dropping back, and when the dust cleared, <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///pga/players/4894" href="https://thescore.com/pga/players/4894">Robert MacIntyre</a> represented the biggest challenge.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>However, Spaun's birdie on the 17th hole pushed him one clear, and he capped the win with an outrageous 64-foot birdie on the iconic 18th to make the final margin two strokes.</p><figure class="article-segment--table"><div class="table-responsive"><table>

</table></div></figure><p>Spaun credited that break in the action as a timeout of sorts that allowed him to get things pointed back in the right direction.</p><p>"All I was thinking was - and even my whole team, my coach, my caddie, they were like, 'Oh, dude, this is exactly what we need.' And it was," Spaun said. "We went back out and capitalized on kind of - I changed my outfit. I'm like, I'm done wearing those clothes. I just needed to reset everything, kind of like start the whole routine over."</p><p>Spaun is the first U.S. Open champion to make six bogeys or worse in the final round since Hale Irwin in 1979. He can thank his putter for delivering when he needed it most, as he entered the week ranked 84th on the PGA TOUR in putting but finished second over four rounds at Oakmont.</p><p>While the highlight was the <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3300661" href="https://thescore.com/news/3300661">absurd finisher on the final hole</a>, the slippery 40-footer for birdie on the 12th hole really represented where things began to change. He ended up holing a mind-boggling 136 feet of putts over his final seven holes.</p><p>Spaun's win came as a surprise given his lack of success in previous majors, but he was in the mix throughout the entire week at Oakmont. The same can't be said for runner-up MacIntyre, who began the day seven strokes off <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///pga/players/1319" href="https://thescore.com/pga/players/1319">Sam Burns</a>' 54-hole lead. The Scotsman thrived in the wet conditions, putting up a sizzling 2-under 68 to grab the clubhouse lead at 1-over. That forced Spaun to play the final two holes in at least 1-under to win the trophy, a task he was up to and then some.</p><p>Spaun and MacIntyre seemed to be the only two players that made runs following the restart, as the majority of the field wilted away in the testing conditions at Oakmont. The final group of Burns and Adam Scott both ended up shooting 78 to fall well out of contention before reaching the final hole.</p><p>"It just wasn't easy out there," Scott admitted to <a href="https://asaptext.com/asap_media/media/1017/1081/browse_file.php?browse_file_name=transcripts/157125.html">ASAP Sports</a>. "All things being equal, it's Sunday of the U.S. Open, one of the hardest setups, and the conditions were the hardest of the week. Thank God it wasn't like this all week."</p><p>Burns actually looked to be the likely winner after a birdie on the 10th but immediately gave that back with a double-bogey on the 11th. He ended up playing his last eight holes in 6-over to end up well off the lead. His fall also continued the trend where 54-hole leaders struggle at Oakmont, as only one has closed out a U.S. Open at the Pittsburgh-area layout.</p>

It's a small piece of positivity for the 36-year-old, who has admitted multiple times that he's struggling to find the same motivation after the most momentous achievement of his professional career in April.</p><p>However, that should change at the final major of the season, when the Open Championship heads to Royal Portrush, an oceanside layout just 60 miles from his hometown of Holywood, Northern Ireland.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>"If I can't get motivated to get up for an Open Championship at home, then I don't know what can motivate me," McIlroy said, according to <a href="https://asaptext.com/asap_media/media/1017/1081/browse_file.php?browse_file_name=transcripts/157078.html">ASAP Sports</a>. "I just need to get myself in the right frame of mind. I probably haven't been there the last few weeks. But as I said, getting home and having a couple weeks off before that, hopefully feeling refreshed and rejuvenated, will get me in the right place again."</p><p>McIlroy will play next week at the Travelers Championship in Hartford before heading to Europe and settling in his new house just outside London. He will then tee it up in the Scottish Open before heading to Portrush.</p><p>Many assumed his win at Augusta National would free him up moving forward, but the opposite has occurred, and he looks like a different person both on and off the course than he did over the past 15 years.</p><p>"Look, I climbed my Everest in April, and I think after you do something like that, you've got to make your way back down, and you've got to look for another mountain to climb," McIlroy said. "An Open at Portrush is certainly one of those."</p><p>This will be the second time McIlroy has played an Open at Royal Portrush, a place where he broke the course record as a 16-year-old with an absurd 61. But the first major played there did not go well for the Ulsterman, as he missed the cut by one stroke after hitting his opening tee shot out of bounds en route to an 8.</p><p>However, he made a charge at the cut with a second-round 65, much to the delight of the roaring home crowd.</p><p>"I didn't realize how emotional I was going to be at Portrush. I think that was a thing I was unprepared for more than anything else," McIlroy admitted. "I remember I hit a shot into 12 or 13 Friday night, obviously trying to make the cut. I remember the roar I got when the ball hit the green, and I felt like I was about to burst into tears. Just that support and that love from your own people. So I was unprepared for that."</p><p> </p>

The 44-year-old is playing in his 97th consecutive major - an outrageous number considering the trio of Burns, Spaun, and Hovland have played in 59 majors combined. After playing what he called "old-man par golf" with two rounds of 70, Scott made four birdies Saturday to match the lowest score of the day with 67.</p><p>While his win came 12 years ago at Augusta, Scott is the only major champion within seven shots of the lead at Oakmont. The Australian's picture-perfect golf swing has produced an incredible career thus far, but a second major feels appropriate to give his 25-year professional resume some added prestige. </p><p>His ball-striking has been brilliant thus far, but perhaps the most impressive showing he had Saturday was out of the bunkers. Scott went 3-for-3 on sand saves for the day, including one from the greenside bunker on the 17th that led to a birdie to book his place in the final group.</p><h3>J.J. Spaun: The underdog</h3><p>Spaun, 34, is in the midst of a career year after finishing runner-up in a playoff to Rory McIlroy at the Players Championship in March. He's been a fixture at Oakmont since the opening day, largely thanks to an incredible putting week on the slick greens. Spaun entered the week ranked 84th in putting this season on the PGA TOUR but is leading the field at the U.S. Open through three rounds. Putting is the most fickle of golf skills day-to-day, so Spaun could crash back down to Earth in the final round, but it's clear he's comfortable on the lightning-quick surfaces this week.</p><p>Another reason to doubt Spaun's legitimate contender status is a quick look at his majors resume. Not only has Spaun never seriously been in the mix, he has just one career top-25 finish in a major. Hovland might just be the most interesting man in golf. He's also an absolute flusher of the golf ball.</p><p>Hovland's iron-play has traditionally been among the best in the world, and remains that way this season with a ninth-place ranking on TOUR in approach. He's third this week in that area as well, so don't be shocked if he's beating down flagsticks all day Sunday. However, like Spaun and his putting, it's an area where Hovland doesn't usually excel that is shining at Oakmont. The Norwegian who once famously said "<a href="https://x.com/PGATOUR/status/1457144297879388160">I suck at chipping</a>," is third in the field at the U.S. Open in strokes gained: around the green. In the rare instance he misses a green, Hovland is getting up-and-down almost every time. That combo makes him a dangerous man on the leaderboard.</p><p>While a win would be Hovland's first major, his resume is already dotted with impressive achievements at age 27. He's already got a FedEx Cup title under his belt, and he would be the 14th player to win the U.S. Amateur and U.S. Open if he notches a comeback victory.</p>

He ranked second last in the field in that area of the game but led the way in approach and was fourth in strokes gained: around the green.</p><p>While there's obvious pressure for a man sleeping on a narrow lead looking to close his first career major, Burns seems to be embracing that challenge heading to Sunday.</p><p>"I think, as a kid growing up, you dream about winning major championships, and that's why we practice so hard and work so hard," Burns said afterward, according to <a href="https://asaptext.com/asap_media/media/1017/1081/browse_file.php?browse_file_name=transcripts/157068.html">ASAP Sports</a>. "All these guys in this field, I think, would agree that to have the opportunity to win a major is special. I'm definitely really excited for tomorrow."</p><p>Scott, 44, is the only major champion on the first page of the leaderboard thanks to a sizzling 3-under 67. A win 12 years after Scott claimed the 2013 Masters would represent the longest period between first and second major titles in men's golf history, according to <a href="https://x.com/JustinRayGolf/status/1934021381127110880">Justin Ray of the Twenty First Group</a>.</p><p>"It would be super fulfilling," Scott said, per <a href="https://asaptext.com/asap_media/media/1017/1081/browse_file.php?browse_file_name=transcripts/157069.html">ASAP Sports</a>. "Everyone out here has got their journey, you know. Putting ourselves in these positions doesn't just happen by fluke. It's not easy to do it. I really haven't been in this kind of position for five or six years, or feeling like I'm that player. But that's what I'm always working towards. It's not that easy to figure it all out."</p><p>Spaun held the co-lead heading to the 18th but made bogey from the greenside bunker to fall back into a tie for second and out of the final group for Sunday.</p><p>Hovland also bogeyed the final hole after finding a bunker, with an errant tee shot forcing him to pitch out back into the fairway. However, he'll have the attention of the trio ahead of him thanks to his impressive resume over the past couple of seasons.</p>

<p><a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///pga/players/599" href="https://thescore.com/pga/players/599">Rory McIlroy</a> has dominated the landscape during this year's major championships - both for his on-course performances and his decision to skip media availability on a regular basis.</p><p>But McIlroy finally spoke Saturday at the U.S. Open after electing to avoid post-round media for the last six rounds at major championships, and he offered an interesting answer when asked if his decision to do so was based upon his less-than-stellar play. </p><p>"No, not really. It's more a frustration with you guys," McIlroy said, according to <a href="https://asaptext.com/asap_media/media/1017/1081/browse_file.php?browse_file_name=transcripts/157041.html">ASAP Sports</a>. "I've been totally available for the last few years, and I'm not saying - maybe not you guys, but maybe more just the whole thing."</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Those last six rounds include the opening two days at Oakmont, where he snuck inside the cut line by a stroke thanks to a strong finish Friday. However, a 74 on Saturday saw him drop to 10-over and sit 13 strokes off Sam Burns' lead.</p><p>McIlroy admitted last week in Canada that one of the reasons he wasn't as eager to chat during tournaments was the leaked report that his driver was deemed nonconforming at the PGA Championship. McIlroy was among a handful of players, including Scottie Scheffler, whose driver failed the test, but he was the only one who saw his name reported.</p><p>He touched on that once again Saturday.</p><p>"I mean, that was a part of it. Yeah, that was a part of it," McIlroy admitted. "But it's not as if - like at Augusta I skipped you guys on Thursday. So yeah, again, it's not if as if - it's not out of the ordinary. I've done it before; I'm just doing it a little more often."</p><p>Part of McIlroy's massive swell of fan support over the past 15 years has come from his openness with the press. He routinely gives incredibly thoughtful answers and was one of the most outspoken players about the PGA TOUR-LIV Golf divide prior to the framework agreement signed between the two organizations.</p><p>McIlroy leaned on that extensive history of speaking to the media as part of his justification for his current pause.</p><p>"I feel like I've earned the right to do whatever I want to do, yeah," McIlroy said.</p><p>The 36-year-old has looked like a completely different person on the course since achieving his lifelong goal of winning the Masters and completing the career grand slam in April. He seemed visibly frustrated at both the PGA Championship and this week at Oakmont, even throwing a club and smashing a tee marker in Round 2.</p><p>Much of that can be attributed to his less-than-stellar play. McIlroy recently admitted he was struggling to find the same motivation after claiming the elusive green jacket two months ago.</p><p>It doesn't appear the media will be getting much post-round reflection Sunday after he laid out his goal for the last day at Oakmont.</p><p>"Hopefully a round in under four-and-a-half hours and get out of here," McIlroy said.</p><p> </p>

His last seven majors are the ultimate boom-or-bust proposition with five top-six finishes and two missed cuts.</p><p>While DeChambeau is the biggest name to miss the cut, he's certainly not the only notable player done after two rounds. <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///pga/players/1747" href="https://thescore.com/pga/players/1747">Justin Thomas</a> once again struggled in one of golf's biggest events, finishing 12-over to miss a cut for the seventh time in his last 11 majors. <p>Apparently nobody told Sam Burns that Oakmont was supposed to be the hardest test of the year.</p><p>The 28-year-old made the iconic layout look like a regular PGA TOUR stop Friday with six birdies against one bogey to post a sizzling 5-under 65. The stellar second round pushed him up the U.S. Open leaderboard and gave him the clubhouse lead at 3-under as the afternoon wave began teeing off.</p><p>Burns' strong performance was the latest in a series of solid play. He fired a final-round 62 in Canada last week before falling short in a playoff against Ryan Fox.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Burns showed throughout Friday's round why he's statistically the best putter on the PGA TOUR, canning all 16 of his putts inside 10 feet. He also ranked second among the morning wave in approach - a deadly combo that explains how he moved up following a 2-over opening round.</p><p>Burns ranked 106th in the field in putting Thursday, but the veteran insisted he didn't make many changes going into the second round.</p><p>"Other than they're extremely difficult, not really," Burns <a href="https://asaptext.com/asap_media/media/1017/1081/browse_file.php?browse_file_name=transcripts/156996.html">told</a> reporters when asked if he learned anything from the greens in Round 1. He credited a scolding from coach Pete Cowan as a big reason behind his turnaround.</p><p>"Pete got into me again on Monday, in the bunker for about 45 minutes. I just sat there, and he scolded me pretty well," Koepka said, according to <a href="https://asaptext.com/asap_media/media/1017/1081/browse_file.php?browse_file_name=transcripts/156969.html">ASAP Sports</a>. "Yeah, Pete, I'll keep that between us. I wasn't happy with it, but it was something I think you need to hear, or I needed to hear at the right time. It's not the first time he's done it. He's not afraid to."</p><p>While Koepka and Rahm were among the notable players in contention, the three biggest stars in the sport struggled to start the tournament.</p><p><a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///pga/players/1540" href="https://thescore.com/pga/players/1540">Scottie Scheffler</a> once again looked human during a U.S. Open, with the challenging layout in the season's third major getting to the World No. 1. His 3-over 73 was his first opening round over par since last year's U.S. Open at Pinehurst.</p><p>Defending champion <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///pga/players/437" href="https://thescore.com/pga/players/437">Bryson DeChambeau</a> struck the ball well enough to be near the top of the leaderboard, gaining a whopping 4.07 strokes off the tee and approach combined. If he can sort out his flatstick overnight, he could make a big run in Friday's second round.</p><p>"For whatever reason, just couldn't get the speed of the greens dialed in," DeChambeau <a href="https://asaptext.com/asap_media/media/1017/1081/browse_file.php?browse_file_name=transcripts/156949.html">admitted</a>. "I was in the collar a couple times, just three-putted on those holes, and three three-putts and doing whatever happened on 12, then No. 9, three-putting there, too. I mean, it could have been a couple-under round pretty easily."</p><p>It was a tale of two nines for McIlroy, who looked like the Masters champion for the first few hours Thursday but closed resembling someone who finished 149th in Canada last weekend. He turned in 2-under after a bogey-free opening nine but made four bogeys and a double on his final stretch to finish with a 4-over 74.</p><p>He once again declined to speak to the media after the round, the fifth straight time he's done that in a major after doing so following all four days of the PGA Championship.</p>

<p><a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///pga/players/599" href="https://thescore.com/pga/players/599">Rory McIlroy</a> achieved the greatest feat of his storied career in April, when he completed the career Grand Slam at the Masters, ending his 11-year major drought in the process.</p><p>One would certainly forgive the 36-year-old if he wanted to celebrate the momentous achievement accordingly, but recent results suggest he's struggling to solidify his place as one of the world's top golfers.</p><p>McIlroy comes to Oakmont for the U.S. Open on the heels of the worst PGA TOUR finish of his career in Canada last week. He admitted Tuesday it hasn't been easy to get back to business after putting on the green jacket.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>"You dream about the final putt going in at the Masters, but you don't think about what comes next," McIlroy <a href="http://asaptext.com/asap_media/media/1017/1081/browse_file.php?browse_file_name=transcripts/156861.html">told</a> reporters. </p><p>He added, "I always struggle to show up with motivation the next week because you've just accomplished something, and you want to enjoy it, and you want to sort of relish the fact that you've achieved a goal. I think chasing a certain goal for the better part of a decade and a half, I think I'm allowed a little bit of time to relax a little bit. But here at Oakmont, I certainly can't relax this week."</p><p>The five-time major winner was a man on fire to begin the season, notching wins at Pebble Beach and The Players Championship ahead of Augusta. The stretch culminated with a Masters win for the ages - a performance McIlroy was building toward since last fall.</p><p>"I worked incredibly hard on my game from October last year all the way up until April this year," McIlroy said. "It was nice to sort of see the fruits of my labor come to fruition and have everything happen. But at the same time, you have to enjoy that. You have to enjoy what you've just accomplished. I certainly feel like I'm still doing that, and I will continue to do that."</p><p>Many assumed McIlroy would run wild with the weight of an elusive Masters victory off his shoulders. The early returns suggest the opposite, as he finished 47th at the PGA Championship and 149th at the Canadian Open.</p><p>"At some point, you have to realize that there's a little bit more golf left to play this season - here, Portrush, Ryder Cup," McIlroy said. "So, those are obviously the three big things that I'm sort of looking at for the rest of the year.</p><p>"But I think weeks like Quail Hollow or even weeks like last week, it makes it easier to reset in some way, to be like, okay, I sort of need to get my stuff together here and get back to the process and what I'd been doing for that seven months from October last year until April this year."</p><p>McIlroy's quest for a second U.S. Open begins Thursday at 7:40 a.m. ET in a very comfortable group alongside good friends Shane Lowry and Justin Rose.</p>
