<p>In any other year, the Toronto Maple Leafs would be taking a lot of heat right now. Fortunately for them, the Blue Jays' World Series run has largely made the Maple Leafs an afterthought in Ontario's capital this October.</p><p>The Maple Leafs enter Thursday 11th in the Eastern Conference with a 5-5-1 record. The reigning Atlantic Division champions have three wins in regulation and none on the road. Their goal differential sits at minus-4. All this while playing just two games against teams that made the playoffs a year ago.</p><p>And yet, history shows us that the slow start should be no reason to hit the panic button. The Maple Leafs, who own the NHL's longest active playoff streak at nine seasons, typically rebound from sluggish Octobers with scorching Novembers.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><figure class="article-segment--table"><div class="table-responsive"><table>

</table></div></figure><p>Can they do it again this year? There's reason to believe that a drastic turnaround once the calendar flips to November is less of a guarantee than it has been in the past. That's in part due to the gaping hole on the team's top line. For all the flak Mitch Marner received for his playoff performances, there's no denying he was integral to Toronto's regular-season success.</p><p>Without Marner, the Maple Leafs continue to search for someone to flank first-line center Auston Matthews - who has yet to really take off with just five goals and three assists in 11 games. The combination of the Maple Leafs captain between Matthew Knies and Max Domi that jelled during Matthews' 69-goal season in 2023-24 hasn't worked. Newcomer Matias Maccelli alongside Matthews and Knies didn't last long. The underlying numbers with Matthews, Knies, and rookie Easton Cowan were strong, but the production wasn't there.</p><p>Bobby McMann and William Nylander have most recently featured on Matthews' line, but it's fair to wonder if McMann has the playmaking chops to get the most out of the three-time Maurice "Rocket" Richard winner. While Nylander and Matthews have chemistry, in a perfect world, Toronto's two best forwards anchor their own lines.</p><p>It feels inevitable that the Maple Leafs will attempt to add a top-six winger at some point before the deadline, but with only three picks in the 2026 draft and no first-rounder until 2028, it won't be easy. Other than Cowan and 2024 first-round pick Ben Danford, Toronto's prospect pool is lacking.</p><p>Regardless, one forward won't fix all of Toronto's problems. This is still a team that's been largely outplayed most nights dating back to the start of last season when Marner was still in the fold.</p><p>The Maple Leafs rank 15th in shot differential and 19th in expected goals share at five-on-five this season. Anthony Stolarz, who's started eight of the team's 11 games with Joseph Woll unavailable to begin the year, hasn't been particularly sharp. He owns an .886 save percentage after leading the league with a .926 mark last season. He's saved 0.87 goals above expected after finishing second in the NHL with 31.2 GSAx a year ago.</p><p>Toronto's underlying numbers were below average in its first season under head coach Craig Berube in 2024-25, but much of that was hidden thanks to great goaltending and an opportunistic offense. The Maple Leafs finished 19th in xGF%, 20th in xGF/60, and 16th in xGA/60 at five-on-five last season.</p><p>More sustained offensive pressure and, in turn, less time defending could lead to better results from Stolarz. Increased O-zone time could be achieved if the Maple Leafs find the right mix up front, but that seems like a big "if" given the results under Berube since the start of last season.</p><p>If everything does come together, the Maple Leafs could take off and, as usual, re-establish themselves as a top-10 team in the league. <p>Chicago Blackhawks phenom <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/13829" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/13829">Connor Bedard</a> put forth arguably the best performance of his NHL career Tuesday, scoring his first hat trick and adding an assist in a 7-3 drubbing of the Ottawa Senators. </p><p>If he's lucky, the decision-makers for Canada's Olympic team took notice.</p><p>"If that's something that I get to do, that would be unbelievable, and I would do anything to be on that team," Bedard told reporters postgame when asked if he was thinking about the Olympics. "But I'm just trying to take things day by day and have fun playing in the NHL and trying to grow as a team and win hockey games and do everything I can to play my best hockey. In the end, that'll be what puts me in a spot to make it."</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Bedard was one of 26 forwards invited to Canada's Olympic orientation camp in the summer. With five forwards already named to the team in June, and several others on the inside track due to strong showings at the 4 Nations Face-Off, Bedard knows making the roster won't be easy.</p><p>"I mean, it's Canada, there's so many amazing players, you never know," the 20-year-old said. "I've just got to keep doing what I'm doing. I'm focused on the Hawks. That stuff kind of comes later down the line."</p><p>The 2023 No. 1 pick appears to be making the kind of leap that could earn him serious consideration for the roster. He's up to six goals and six assists in 10 games this season with a plus-4 rating.</p><p>Bedard's skating has also improved enough that the pace of Olympic hockey wouldn't be an issue. His max speed of 22.36 mph ranks in the 79th percentile among NHL players this season, up from 21.44 mph last season, which ranked below the 50th percentile.</p><p>His two-way game remains a work in progress, however. Chicago owns a 36.9% share of the expected goals with Bedard on the ice at five-on-five, per <a href="https://evolving-hockey.com/">Evolving-Hockey</a>. He also owns a negative defensive goals above replacement at minus-0.8.</p>

Miller</a> is embracing the extra meaning of his first game back in Vancouver since the Canucks traded him last season.</p><p>"It's going to be emotional for me, no doubt," Miller told reporters ahead of Tuesday's clash at Rogers Arena, according to the <a href="https://x.com/MollieeWalkerr/status/1983251470452699509">New York Post's Mollie Walker</a>. "Just trying to worry about our task at hand for the Rangers. I know that emotion is going to be there. Just going to try to use it to the best of my ability."</p><p>The Canucks traded Miller to the Rangers in January following a highly publicized rift with teammate <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/7699" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/7699">Elias Pettersson</a>. The Canucks reportedly shopped both players, but opted to keep the younger Pettersson. You can't go back and change anything," he said. "Obviously it's ugly sometimes at the end, but I think for the majority of the time I was here, it's been all positive, it's been a lot of good things. I'm not going to sit here and dwell over the way it ended. I didn't expect that to be pretty."</p><p>His time with the Canucks was highly successful before things turned sour. Miller tallied 437 points in 404 games across six seasons with the club, adding nine goals and 21 assists in 30 playoff appearances.</p><p>However, Miller admitted he's unsure what kind of reception he'll get from Canucks fans.</p><p>"I never said a bad thing about Vancouver when I left," Miller said. "I loved it here. It was like home away from home. The way they treated myself and my family is something we'll always cherish."</p>

He's averaging 14:43 per contest, which would be his lowest mark since he was an 18-year-old rookie.</p><p>The 25-year-old has managed 15 total shots and five hits this season. He averaged 223 shots and 167 hits per 82 games in his career entering 2025-26.</p><p>Svechnikov set career highs with 30 goals and 39 assists in 2021-22. He tallied 20 goals and 28 assists last season before adding 12 points in 15 playoff appearances.</p><p>He says he isn't overly concerned with his early-season slump.</p><p>"If you go negative, then it's going to get worse and worse. So I try to stay positive. It's fine," Svechnikov said Monday. "Maybe for some it's a bigger deal, but for me, it's not that big of a deal. I've been there - maybe not in the start of the year, but I've been there many times, so it's fine, totally fine. I could have scored last game. I didn't.</p><p>"I've just got to find my game, that's all. I don't worry about the points or goals."</p><p>The Hurricanes drafted Svechnikov second overall in 2018. He's in the fifth season of a eight-year contract carrying an average annual value of $7.75 million.</p>

While his sophomore campaign has been slightly underwhelming relative to the lofty standards he established as a rookie, Thomas still paces Jacksonville with 365 receiving yards in seven games.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>He's under contract for at least two more seasons - three if the team decides to pick up his fifth-year option. The Jaguars drafted Thomas 23rd overall in 2024, although that was under the organization's previous regime. Jacksonville hired Liam Coen as head coach in January and James Gladstone as general manager in February.</p><p>The Jaguars, who rank 16th in the NFL in points against, are also shopping for players on defense, Russini adds. They enter Sunday holding the third and final wild-card spot in the AFC with a 4-3 record.</p><p>Jacksonville owns 12 picks in the 2026 draft, but it's without a first-rounder after trading up to select two-way star <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nfl/players/209912" href="https://thescore.com/nfl/players/209912">Travis Hunter</a> in 2025.</p>

The club initially considered him day-to-day. The 27-year-old has managed one assist while averaging 12:36 per contest.</p><p>Injuries have played a major role in Laine's career in recent years. He played in only 181 out of a possible 328 games over the last four seasons.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Laine tallied 20 goals and 13 assists in 52 games during his first season with the Canadiens in 2024-25.</p><p>The No. 2 pick in 2016 by the Winnipeg Jets, Laine took the NHL by storm with 138 goals in his first four seasons. However, he's scored just 86 in the six campaigns since.</p><p>Laine is in the final year of his contract with an $8.7-million cap hit. He'll be an unrestricted free agent at season's end.</p>

Columbus general manager Don Waddell said at the time that he'd talked to teams but wouldn't trade Chinakhov just for the sake of accommodating the request.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>The 24-year-old winger has averaged only 8:41 per game in three appearances this season. He set career highs with 16 goals and 13 assists in 53 games during the 2023-24 campaign. Injuries limited him to 30 contests a year ago, in which he managed 15 points.</p><p>The Blue Jackets drafted Chinakhov 21st overall in 2020. The New York Islanders expressed interest in hiring Shanahan before ultimately tabbing Mathieu Darche to lead their hockey operations department in May.</p><p>Despite his new role, the 56-year-old could be a leading candidate to latch on with another NHL team if an opportunity arises, Dreger adds.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Shanahan worked in the league office for five years prior to his tenure with the Maple Leafs, spending three seasons as the vice president of player safety.</p><p>A three-time Stanley Cup champion during his 21-year NHL playing career, Shanahan was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2013.</p>

<p>Ottawa Senators captain <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/7845" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/7845">Brady Tkachuk</a> could be out at least four weeks with a wrist injury suffered in Monday's game against the Nashville Predators, head coach Travis Green told reporters Tuesday, including <a href="https://x.com/jkamckenzie/status/1978134340027506993">The Athletic's Julian McKenzie</a>.</p><p>Tkachuk crashed into the boards after being hit by <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/1663" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/1663">Roman Josi</a> in the first period. After initially leaving the game, Tkachuk returned to log 13:53 in the contest, though he didn't play the final nine minutes of the 4-1 loss. He notched 29 goals and 55 points in 72 games last campaign, finishing 18th in Hart Trophy voting while captaining the Senators to their first playoff appearance since 2017. He also led the team in shots (296), hits (228), and penalty minutes (228).</p><p>The 26-year-old was one of six players named to the United States' Olympic team back in June, along with his brother, <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/5591" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/5591">Matthew</a> (who's also injured), <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/4558" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/4558">Jack Eichel</a>, <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/5586" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/5586">Auston Matthews</a>, <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/7960" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/7960">Quinn Hughes</a>, and <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/5599" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/5599">Charlie McAvoy</a>.</p><p>Team USA opens its tournament Feb. 12 against Latvia.</p>

<p>The Montreal Canadiens have locked up their management team, signing president of hockey operations Jeff Gorton and general manager Kent Hughes to five-year extensions, the club announced Tuesday.</p><p>Gorton held the title of executive vice president of hockey operations before Tuesday's announcement. Both his and Hughes' contracts were set to expire at the end of the season.</p><p>"I am very pleased that Jeff and Kent have committed to the Montreal Canadiens for an additional five years. Their commitment to building a world-class organization has been unrelenting and will only get better as we progress in the years to come," Canadiens owner, president, and CEO Geoff Molson said.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>"I would like to thank Jeff and Kent for taking this team and organization to where it is today, full of talent, size, and speed with a support structure that is second to none, an objective from Day 1. I look forward to many more years working with them."</p><p>Gorton joined the Canadiens in November 2021. Montreal hired Hughes in January 2022.
