<p>San Jose Sharks captain <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/1422" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/1422">Logan Couture</a> will announce his retirement Tuesday, <a href="https://x.com/frank_seravalli/status/1911875789181644956">Daily Faceoff's Frank Seravalli</a> reports.</p><p>Couture hasn't played since Jan. 31, 2024, due to a nagging groin injury. The 36-year-old is under contract through 2026-27 at an $8-million cap hit.</p><p>He hasn't played a full season since the 2022-23 campaign when he tallied 27 goals and 67 points in the full 82-game slate. Couture then missed the first 45 games of the following season rehabbing a groin injury, which he thought at the time might end his playing career.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>His comeback attempt was ultimately limited to six games, and he hasn't played since.</p><p>Couture appeared in 933 NHL contests, all with the Sharks, and racked up 323 goals and 701 points. He ranks fifth in franchise history in games played, third in goals, and fourth in points.</p><p>The Guelph, Ontario, native was a superb playoff performer. He notched 48 goals and 101 points in 116 career postseason games, leading the playoffs in scoring in 2016 and in goals in 2019.</p><p>San Jose named Couture captain ahead of the 2019-20 campaign. The Sharks drafted him ninth overall in 2007.</p>

He led the league in scoring and crushed the single-season scoring record by a defenseman. The previous record of 53 points was shared by three-time Stanley Cup champion Brian Rafalski in 1998-99 and former Calgary Flame Pekka Rautakallio in 1978-79.</p><p>The 26-year-old added three assists in eight playoff contests. Leppanen was also named league MVP.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Leppanen has spent his entire career playing in his native Finland. It's f----d," according to <a href="https://x.com/MollieeWalkerr/status/1911471108575957415">New York Post Sports' Mollie Walker</a>.</p><p>De Haan has been a healthy scratch for the last 18 games. He's suited up for just three contests for the Rangers after being traded by the Colorado Avalanche, where he played 44 games before the deal.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Rangers PR had a conversation with de Haan after he came off the ice, and he decided to wait until the end of the season to speak with the media, according to <a href="https://x.com/MollieeWalkerr/status/1911471464806490557">Walker</a>.</p><p>De Haan later took to social media to address the situation.</p><p>"I said what I said because I am frustrated, and any competitor who says that they would be happy in this position would be lying to you," de Haan <a href="https://x.com/cal_dehaan/status/1911494041503510704">wrote on X</a>. "After playing three games for the team and going 2-0-1, I thought I maybe would have got an opportunity to jump into the lineup and help win some games.</p><p>"Did I help win those games I played, maybe? I understand the youth movement in the NHL, and I'm getting older in hockey years, and I may not play every single night. ... I feel like I can still keep up and help a team in certain facets of the game.</p><p>"I'm not trying to be the villain or gain attention or throw shade on the organization. I would have preferred a scrum setting to chat about how my time with the Rangers has gone. As a player, you have to respect the lineup decisions, whether you like them or not, it's just been frustrating not being able to compete and do what I love to do. I hope everyone understands."</p><p>De Haan is set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer. The 33-year-old has played 679 NHL games over 13 seasons.</p>

"There's so many ways you look at it: respect and integrity and character, family name, my teammates, fans. It's every single which way you look at it. The money that I lose on top of all that - not that I care about in that sense; I'd give it all back to play.</p><p>"A lot of regret, but (it) is what it is, and I have to find a way to move forward."</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Ekblad was suspended March 10 after failing a random drug test. The veteran blue-liner <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///news/3238904" href="https://thescore.com/news/3238904">said</a> he mistakenly took something to help recover from recent injuries without first checking with proper medical and team personnel.</p><p>He resumed team activities with the Panthers on Thursday but remains suspended through Game 2 of the first round.</p><p>"(Games 1 and 2 will) be the toughest two games, of course," Ekblad said. "That's obvious. So, I'm just going to try and keep myself in as best shape as I can so that once Game 3 rolls around, it's easy for me to come back in. And it's not the first time that I've stepped into the playoffs cold, after injuries even, so I'm confident that I'll be fine coming into it. But those two games would be very tough to watch, for sure."</p><p>Ekblad missed the last 20 games of the 2021-22 regular season with a lower-body injury and returned for Game 1 in the first round versus the Washington Capitals.</p><p>The rest that's coincided with his suspension is a silver lining for Ekblad.</p><p>"Obviously, all of this happening, it's a ton of rest," Ekblad said. "My body hasn't felt this good since coming into Game 1 of the season. It's almost like a mini training camp. It's the best I've felt in a while, for sure."</p><p>The Panthers have gone 6-8-1 in Ekblad's absence.</p>

</table></div></figure><p>Ovechkin's pursuit of the all-time goals record was mesmerizing and brought the most out of the Capitals. It's impossible to gauge the impact Ovechkin's chase had on Washington exceeding expectations, but it's more than fair to assume the positive momentum generated from both was mutually beneficial.</p><p>At 39, Ovechkin is scoring at a 55-goal 82-game pace and has a career-high shooting percentage of 18.5%. He still ranks second in team scoring despite missing 16 games with a broken leg.</p><p>Obviously, other players have had better seasons. Jack Eichel set the Vegas Golden Knights single-season scoring record and has been excellent at five-on-five. And Ovechkin's defensive metrics leave a lot to be desired.</p><p>But at the same time, how many players have truly been more valuable to a team's season? Ovechkin has the Capitals flying high heading into the playoffs, and he'll certainly sneak onto Hart ballots as a result.</p><h3>4. </table></div></figure><p>Kucherov hasn't hit the same heights as his 44-goal, 144-point campaign last year, but his overall impact has been similarly vital for the Tampa Bay Lightning.</p><p>The Russian dynamo could be on his way to a second consecutive Art Ross Trophy. That's something only Connor McDavid has done since 2001.</p><p>Kucherov's been the most lethal power-play playmaker in the league for the past two seasons and has now racked up three straight campaigns with more than 80 assists. Only Wayne Gretzky, Bobby Orr, and Paul Coffey have done that before, which is decent company to keep.</p><p>And while Kucherov's prowess on the man advantage gets most of the attention, his five-on-five game has been especially notable this campaign. His 58 five-on-five points rank second in the NHL, and he's won his minutes 77-47. That's a significant improvement from 2023-24 when the Lightning were up 81-76 in Kucherov's five-on-five minutes, and that came in a season where he finished second in Hart voting.</p><h3>3. </table></div></figure><p>If you take the meaning of Most Valuable Player as its exact definition, the Hart Trophy should go to a goaltender every season.</p><p>That's not the way the award is voted on, though. Carey Price is the most recent netminder to claim the Hart in 2015, and it takes a special year for a goalie to get in the mix.</p><p>That's what Hellebuyck has put together. His record is absurd, and by every metric, he's been far and away the best man between the pipes this season. He leads the NHL in wins, shutouts, goals-against average, and save percentage. No goaltender has done that since 1986, and three of the four netminders who have accomplished the feat are in the Hockey Hall of Fame.</p><p>Hellebuyck's the biggest reason the Winnipeg Jets might win the Presidents' Trophy, and he deserves the recognition of Hart votes, not just the Vezina.</p><h3>2. It's a feat the likes of Mario Lemieux, Sidney Crosby, and McDavid haven't accomplished.</p><p>Ultimately, MacKinnon likely comes up just short, but it's not for a lack of effort. He's the joint top scorer in the league with 116 points but almost certainly won't stay atop the leaderboard, as he's expected to miss Colorado's remaining regular-season games while he nurses a minor injury.</p><p>MacKinnon continues to be arguably the league's most unrelenting offensive driver. He has the outright league lead in assists (84) and shots on goal (320), and he ranks second in even-strength points (78). No forward has played more per game than MacKinnon's 22:47.</p><h3>1. He's done precisely that, leading the NHL in goals as likely the only player to reach the 50-goal mark this season.</p><p>He's also done it without running mate McDavid at times. The German has notched 16 points in nine games without McDavid in the lineup to put the Oilers on his back in important moments.</p><p>What we don't typically expect from Draisaitl is two-way dominance, and yet that's the evolution we've seen this campaign. Draisaitl's 60.3 xGF% is the best mark of his career. He has his lowest on-ice expected goals-against per 60 mark since 2015-16, all while maintaining elite chance creation at the other end of the ice.</p><p>Recent injuries shouldn't prevent Draisaitl from claiming his second Hart Trophy. <p>Pittsburgh Penguins general manager Kyle Dubas was tabbed as Canada's general manager for the upcoming World Championship, Hockey Canada announced Thursday.</p><p>Dubas served as Canada's associate GM at last year's Worlds. Canada finished fourth after losing to Switzerland in the semifinals and Sweden in the bronze-medal game.</p><p>He was also director of player personnel for Canada at the 4 Nations Face-Off, and he'll fill that same role during the 2026 Olympics.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Doug Armstrong, the St. Louis Blues' GM and director of the Canadian national men's team, selected Dubas and the rest of the staff.</p><p>"Kyle is an excellent general manager, and his recent experience at the 4 Nations Face-Off and last year's men's Worlds will be beneficial in building and leading Canada's national men's team as it looks to reclaim gold at the IIHF World Championship," Armstrong said in a press release.</p><p>"Kyle has great relationships with players and staff throughout the NHL, and as a member of (the) management group for the 2026 Olympics, we are confident he is the best person to lead Team Canada."</p><p>Dennis Bonvie of the Boston Bruins, Gregory Campbell of the Florida Panthers, Andrew Cogliano of the Colorado Avalanche, and Jason Spezza of the Penguins will assist in player evaluation and selection.</p><p>Dubas has been an NHL general manager for seven seasons - five with the Toronto Maple Leafs and two with the Penguins. It has been for a little bit now."</p><p>Since March 3, New York has outscored opponents 33-28 at five-on-five but has lost the special teams battle 14-7. "We're close to dead last. That's not good enough."</p><p>The Rangers' power play has operated at a 17.2% clip in 2024-25 to rank 27th in the NHL.</p><p>Fox believes the man-advantage struggles have been compounding game by game.</p><p>"The execution is certainly not there, but I think when you go on one of those slumps, you start maybe trying to force the issue a little more," Fox said, per <a href="https://x.com/MollieeWalkerr/status/1908599632843723207">Walker</a>. "I think it could be a reason we're even giving up chances more than ever, too. It's not that we're not scoring, it's we're not even generating any momentum from it."</p><p>Head coach Peter Laviolette suggested the shorthanded chances against are caused by the power play trying too hard to break through.</p><p>"We're looking for something offensively, maybe pressing too much," Laviolette said, according to <a href="https://x.com/MollieeWalkerr/status/1908600311486332963">Walker</a>. "Any time you're doing that, you're subject to get caught the other way."</p><p>The Rangers remain two points out of the final wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference.</p>

His 26 goals are tied for third in the country. The Tampa Bay Lightning drafted the Michigan State standout 31st overall in 2022. It's an effort thing."</p><p>Duclair has seven goals and 11 points in 44 games this season but just four goals and five points in 34 contests since the start of 2025.</p><p>The 29-year-old signed a four-year, $14-million contract with the Islanders last summer.</p><p>Duclair previously played for Roy with the QMJHL's Quebec Remparts from 2011-13.</p>
