McDavid was the fourth fastest in NHL history to do so, needing just 659 games. MacKinnon, meanwhile, hit the mark in his 856th career contest.</p>

<p>NHL commissioner Gary Bettman upheld the suspension of Minnesota Wild forward <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/3289" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/3289">Ryan Hartman</a> but reduced the length from 10 games to eight, the league <a data-in-app-uri="" href="https://media.nhl.com/public/news/18724">announced</a> Monday.</p><p>Hartman was suspended for roughing Senators forward <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/9189" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/9189">Tim Stutzle</a> during Ottawa's 6-0 win Feb. 1. He is now eligible to return to the Wild's lineup March 4 against the Seattle Kraken.</p><p>In his <a href="https://media.nhl.com/site/asset/public/ext/2024-25/HartmanRuling.pdf">decision</a>, Bettman noted Hartman's most recent previous suspension was for three games. He determined that an increase of seven games was "excessive" and not proportional, and that the eight-game ban should "serve as an appropriate 'wake-up call' to Mr. Hartman."</p><p>It's the first time Bettman has reduced a suspension on appeal since lowering a six-game ban against Toronto's Jason Spezza to a four-game suspension in 2021.</p><p>Hartman has seven goals and 10 assists in 48 games for Minnesota this season.</p>

<p>The New York Rangers signed defenseman <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/9738" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/9738">Will Borgen</a> to a five-year contract extension, the team announced Saturday.</p><p>The deal carries a $4.1-million average annual value, <a href="https://x.com/vzmercogliano/status/1883290477753167960">according to Vince Z. Mercogliano of USA Today</a>.</p><p>New York acquired Borgen on Dec. 18 in a trade with the Kraken that sent former No. 2 overall pick <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/8593" href="https://thescore.com/nhl/players/8593">Kaapo Kakko</a> to Seattle. The Rangers also received a third- and sixth-round pick in the 2025 draft from the Kraken as part of the deal.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>The contract includes a no-movement clause for the rest of the 2024-25 season, <a href="https://x.com/Peter_Baugh/status/1883293043060867481">Peter Baugh of The Athletic reports</a>. It then becomes a 15-team no-trade list in 2025-26, a 10-team no-trade list in 2026-27, a six-team list in 2028-29, and finally, no protection for the last year of the deal.</p><p>Borgen has one goal and a pair of assists in 17 games since arriving in New York. He registered a goal and an assist over 33 contests this season with Seattle before the deal. The 28-year-old had a career-high 25 points for the Kraken last campaign.</p><p>Borgen was playing out the final year of his contract with a $2.7-million cap hit and set to be an unrestricted free agent at season's end. He's now signed with the Rangers through the 2029-2030 campaign.</p>

<p>Camryn Rogers won gold in the women's hammer throw Tuesday in Paris, becoming the first Canadian woman to ever medal in the event.</p><p>It's a hammer throw golden sweep for Canada at the 2024 Paris Games after Ethan Katzberg won the men's competition Sunday. It's only the third time in Olympic history that the same country won both gold medals and the first time it's been accomplished by a country other than Poland. </p><p>Rogers qualified for the final with a 74.69-meter throw and earned gold with 76.97 meters on her penultimate toss, putting her nearly 1.5 meters ahead of the rest of the competition. By the time she stepped up for her final throw, she had already secured gold.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Annette Nneka Echikunwoke of the United States took the silver with 75.48 meters. She is the first American woman to medal in the event and the first person from the U.S. to medal in hammer throw since Lance Deal in 1996.</p><p>China's Zhao Jie was the bronze medalist at 74.27 meters.</p><p>Rogers is the reigning world champion, having claimed gold in Budapest in 2023 with a 77.22-meter toss after capturing silver at the world championships the year prior.</p>

"But then my name popped up and I'm like 'Oh my gosh, amazing!" Lyles added</p><p>“I thought I had (him) cleared,” Thompson said<a href="https://apnews.com/article/2024-olympics-100m-lyles-thompson-ccf37184afc2f3318271d4c495d2a16b">.</a> “But I wasn’t sure. It was so close.”</p><p>American Fred Kerley, the silver medalist in the event at 2020 Tokyo, earned the bronze in a time of 9.81 seconds. Akani Simbine of South Africa just missed the podium, finishing in fourth place 0.01 seconds behind Kerley.</p><p>Italy's Marcell Jacobs, the defending Olympic gold medalist, finished in fifth place at 9.85 seconds.</p><p>The win marks Lyles's second career Olympic medal after he took bronze in the 200m in Tokyo. The official time of 9.784 seconds marked a personal best for the American.</p><p>The finish was the closest in the 100m since at least Moscow 1980. In that race, Britain's Allan Wells just beat out Silvio Leonard of Cuba, but electronic timers didn't go into thousandths of a second in that era, so it's unknown if this year's finish was even closer.</p><p>Lyles spent a large chunk of the race trailing and had to chase down Thompson to force the finish. He then had to wait around 30 seconds to actually hear his name called as the winner. Fred Kerley and Kenneth Bednarek also qualified for the final with times of 9.84 and 9.93, respectively.</p><p>Lyles, the 2023 world champion at both 100m and 200m, is looking to become the first U.S. male sprinter to earn Olympic gold in this event since Justin Gatlin at the 2004 Athens Games. Kerley was the silver medalist behind Italy's Marcell Jacobs at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Seville and fellow Jamaican Kishane Thompson were the fastest to qualify for the final. Thompson had the best time at 9.80 seconds, with Seville just .01 seconds behind.</p><p>Jacobs will look to defend his gold medal after advancing to the final. <p>Canadian sprinter Andre De Grasse won't medal in the 100m in Paris after failing to qualify for the final.</p><p>De Grasse posted a time of 9.98 seconds, putting him in fifth place in his semifinal and just outside the eight men who advanced to the final.</p><p>The Canadian was attempting to medal in the event for the third straight Olympics after earning bronze in both the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics and 2020 Tokyo Games. He's one of only 11 men to have multiple Olympic medals in the 100m.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>World champion American Noah Lyles claimed gold in the event with a thrilling photo-finish victory over Jamaica's Kishane Thompson.</p><p>This won't be the final medal chance for De Grasse in Paris as he'll still compete in the 200m, beginning Monday, where he's the defending Olympic gold medalist.</p>

<p>Team USA's defense of its gold medal in women's 3x3 basketball got off to a rocky start with three straight losses in pool play, but the Americans have found the win column at the Paris Olympics.</p><p>The U.S. improved to 1-3 in round-robin play with a 17-11 victory over Spain. The win came following earlier losses to Germany, Azerbaijan, and Australia.</p><p>Hailey Van Lith and Rhyne Howard led the way with five points apiece for the Americans, who made 11 of their 18 shots from the field in the win. Spain, meanwhile, shot 8-of-20 on Thursday.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>Despite the win, the U.S. still remains in the basement of pool play, while Spain sits in the middle of the pack with a 2-2 record.</p><p>The U.S. men's 3x3 team hasn't fared much better, as it also lost its first three games in Paris after failing to qualify for the competition at Tokyo 2020. Led by former BYU standout Jimmer Fredette, the Americans were soundly beaten by Serbia in their opener before losing a close one to Poland. Fredette was then unable to play in Thursday's loss to Lithuania.</p><p>The U.S. women's team will look to keep their winning ways going with matchups against France, Canada, and China to come. The men have a Thursday afternoon game against Latvia to try to earn their first victory.</p>

<p><a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/players/5586" href="https://www.thescore.com/nhl/players/5586">Auston Matthews </a>seems to have taken his game to another level.</p><p>The Toronto Maple Leafs superstar came into this season as arguably the most reliable goal-scorer in the NHL, but his ability to find the back of the net has gone from incredible to otherworldly in recent months.</p><p>Matthews registered a hat trick less than halfway through Saturday's 9-2 drubbing of the Anaheim Ducks. He racked up only 14:52 of ice time because of the lopsided nature of the contest. "It's pretty remarkable," Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe said postgame.</p><p>Matthews has notched three goals in consecutive games for the second time this season. He's the first NHL player with back-to-back hat tricks on multiple occasions since Wayne Gretzky in 1983-84, according to <a href="https://twitter.com/SNstats/status/1759027428242948154">Sportsnet Stats</a>.</p><p>Keefe noted that other teams are well aware of the pace Matthews has been on, but perhaps the most impressive part of his game is that he keeps finding ways to light the lamp.</p><p>"As much as Auston has been scoring, you know teams are talking about him," Keefe said, adding, "And one of the greatest things about Auston is he continues to find ways to get available and get to spots."</p><p>Matthews also set a franchise record with his sixth total hat trick this season, which is the most for any player since Mario Lemieux had six in 1995-96. "Definitely pretty cool."</p><p>The three-goal barrage puts Matthews' season total at 48 goals through 53 games, and he's now on pace for just under 75 tallies. No one has reached that rarefied air since Alexander Mogilny and Teemu Selanne each scored 76 during the 1992-93 campaign.</p><p>Matthews will look to add to his total Monday afternoon when the Leafs travel to St. Louis for a matinee against the Blues.</p>

<p>Despite a perfect 13-0 season, Florida State was on the outside looking in when the College Football Playoff semifinal participants were announced Sunday.</p><p>The Seminoles had to settle for the fifth spot in the rankings, watching Michigan, Washington, Texas, and Alabama get the coveted positions instead. </p><p>Florida State athletic director Michael Alford didn't mince words while offering his disappointment with the selection committee's decision.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>"The consequences of giving in to a narrative of the moment are destructive, far-reaching, and permanent," Alford said in a <a href="https://seminoles.com/news/2023/12/3/football-statement-from-michael-alford-vice-president-and-athletics-director-florida-state-university">statement</a>. "Not just for Florida State, but college football as a whole."</p><p>Florida State became the first Power 5 conference champion to go undefeated and yet still be left out of the top four since the College Football Playoff was instituted in 2014. Texas and Alabama were selected ahead of the Seminoles despite both suffering losses, which Alford believes to be a travesty.</p><p>"The argument of whether a team is the 'most deserving or best' is a false equivalence," Alford said. "It renders the season up to yesterday irrelevant and significantly damages the legitimacy of the College Football Playoff."</p><p>Florida State head coach Mike Norvell was equally incensed by the decision, questioning the committee's process and what the selection will ultimately mean for college football.</p><p>"I am disgusted and infuriated with the committee's decision today to have what was earned on the field taken away because a small group of people decided they knew better than the results of the games," Norvell <a href="https://x.com/FSUFootball/status/1731387330278351135">said</a>. "What is the point of playing games?"</p><p>"What happened today goes against everything that is true and right in college football," he added. "A team that overcame tremendous adversity and found a way to win doing whatever it took on the field was cheated today. It's a sad day for college football."</p><p>The decision by the selection committee was made in large part due to the quarterback situation for FSU. Star QB <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///ncaaf/players/128710" href="https://www.thescore.com/ncaaf/players/128710">Jordan Travis</a> sustained a devastating injury against North Alabama, and backup <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///ncaaf/players/148653" href="https://www.thescore.com/ncaaf/players/148653">Tate Rodemaker</a> missed the ACC Championship Game against Louisville, leaving the Seminoles down to their third-stringer at the most important position. This adversity should have fueled Florida State's candidacy rather than hurt it, according to Alford.</p><p>"The fact that this team has continued to close out victories in dominant fashion facing our current quarterback situation should have enhanced our case to get a playoff berth earned on the field," Alford said.</p><p>Travis echoed Alford's thoughts, lamenting his injury coming so late in the season and unfairly, in his mind, taking the opportunity away from his teammates.</p><figure class="article-segment--embed"><blockquote class="twitter-tweet">

<p>UFC 295 has seen a major shakeup as heavyweight champion Jon Jones is out of his title fight with Stipe Miocic, UFC president Dana White announced.</p><p>Jones tore a tendon in his pectoral and will require surgery, which will keep him out of action for eight months, according to White.</p><p>The bout between Jiri Prochazka and Alex Pereira for the vacant light heavyweight title slides in to replace Jones-Miocic as the main event, while Sergei Pavlovich and Tom Aspinall will now square off for the interim heavyweight championship in the co-main event.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>With Jones' injury, Miocic has also been removed from the card completely. The hope is for the UFC to rebook Jones versus Miocic at some point in 2024 once Jones has healed from his injury, reports <a href="https://twitter.com/marcraimondi/status/1717050104522350603">ESPN's Marc Raimondi</a>.</p><p>The fight was supposed to be the first heavyweight title defense for Jones after he secured the belt in his debut in the weight class by choking out Ciryl Gane just over two minutes into the first round of their UFC 285 fight in March. Miocic hasn't fought in the Octagon since losing the heavyweight title to Francis Ngannou at UFC 260 in March 2021.</p><p>UFC 295 is scheduled for Nov. 11 at Madison Square Garden in New York City.</p>

"We had the opportunity to do that tonight and we did it. We rose to the occasion."</p><p>Making the playoffs caps a remarkable turnaround for the second-year franchise after Seattle finished 27-49-6 in its inaugural season. That was good enough for 60 points and last place in the Pacific Division.</p><p>"You look at the leap that we've made and it’s special," Eberle said, per Baker. "We've got a special group in here."</p><p>The Kraken become the seventh Western Conference team to clinch a postseason berth this season, leaving only one up for grabs. The Winnipeg Jets and Calgary Flames are currently tied for the last spot with 89 points, while the Predators sit one point back. The Jets and Predators each have one game in hand on Calgary.</p><p>By making the playoffs in their second season, the Kraken follow in the footsteps of the expansion franchise that preceded them, the Vegas Golden Knights. Vegas managed to not only make the playoffs in its first season but went all the way to the Stanley Cup Final before losing to the Washington Capitals. The Golden Knights made the playoffs in each of their first four seasons before missing out for the first time last year.</p><p>The Kraken have four games remaining in the regular season, concluding their schedule with a pair of contests against Vegas.</p>

<p>The <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nhl/teams/10" href="https://www.thescore.com/nhl/teams/10">Pittsburgh Penguins</a> spent much of Wednesday's 5-4 overtime loss to the Ottawa Senators killing off penalties. Pittsburgh was shorthanded nine times, giving up four power-play goals along the way that allowed Ottawa to claim victory. </p><p>Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan was at a loss trying to describe his team's performance following the defeat.</p><p>"It's pretty tough to assess a game like that when half the game is special teams," Sullivan <a href="https://twitter.com/penguins/status/1615912889109315584">said</a> after the game. "There was no flow to it, there was no five-on-five, it was ridiculous."</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>In addition to the nine power plays for Ottawa, the Senators were also called for five penalties, leaving just over half of the game played at five-on-five.</p><p>Sullivan's main gripe postgame appeared to be with the officiating on the night.</p><p>"Let's just say I question a fair amount of the calls," Sullivan added.</p><p>While he took issue with the calls against his team, Sullivan also recognized that giving up four power-play goals is hardly a recipe for success and gave credit to his penalty killers for trying to fight through the adversity. </p><p>"We gave up four goals against, it's not good enough," Sullivan said. "We battled hard but when you're spending a third of the game trying to kill penalties it puts an awful lot of burden on those guys."</p><p>The loss dropped Pittsburgh to 22-15-7 on the year as the Pens currently sit in fifth place in the Metropolitan division. They return to action Friday, once again against the Senators.</p>
