They achieved the pinnacle in college football by dominating the third-down battles against the Crimson Tide, who were not used to trailing late in games this season, let alone failing to establish drives on a consistent basis.By doing so, Clemson is now at the top - a place that’s been within its grasp for so long. Dabo Swinney joins the likes of Urban Meyer and Nick Saban in hoisting up the College Football Playoff title trophy, solidifying himself as arguably the only coach with a program that currently can compete and beat Alabama on a regular basis.The journey to this point was fraught with uneven play at times, nail-biting finishes, and doubts that they could do what no team had done. However, Swinney believed Clemson was the only squad capable of dethroning Alabama, and it was the conviction he carried with that statement that fueled the team through a slow start, third-down battles, and a back-and-forth final quarter. The Tigers know the Crimson Tide want to establish dominance up front, then use Hurts to open up the field.In many regards, Clemson’s defensive line can determine the outcome of this contest. The Tigers have been explosive, as they registered 11 tackles for a loss in their dominating shutout win over <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///ncaaf/teams/507" href="http://www.thescore.com/ncaaf/teams/507">Ohio State</a>. While it is far too early to tell which hires have been the right ones, judging a coach's pedigree and new environment are good indicators of how effective he might be in his new role.With this in mind, here's a look at the coaching hires so far and how effective each might be:<h3>Tom Herman, Texas</h3>It's hard to argue with Herman's track record, as he led Houston's program to a 22-4 record in two years. A big reason for his success was his ability to build a culture similar to what Urban Meyer built at <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///ncaaf/teams/507" href="http://www.thescore.com/ncaaf/teams/507">Ohio State</a>. Due to this, and his recruiting ties in Texas, it won't be surprising to see the Longhorns take their next step back to national title contender. The only question will be how long it takes Herman to do this?<div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div>Grade: A<h3>Major Applewhite, Houston</h3>Applewhite's hire is important because it keeps continuity within the program since Herman's departure; this can be a huge selling point to attract recruits. At the same time, Herman elevated Houston's program to the point that having nine to ten win seasons are becoming the new expectation. The expectations, coupled with this being Applewhite's first head coaching job could create some concerns. He's also sticking to basics, understanding the Ducks have to be more physical to compete in an improving Pac-12 North.Grade: A<h3>Matt Rhule, Baylor</h3>What Rhule did at <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///ncaaf/teams/629" href="http://www.thescore.com/ncaaf/teams/629">Temple</a> was phenomenal, as he took a football program that almost ended and helped transform it into conference champions. Rhule is old school in that he believes in power run football and strong defenses. There's no doubt he can change the culture at Baylor, the biggest question concerns how does his on-field philosophy translate with the rest of the conference?Grade: B<h3>Luke Fickell, Cincinnati</h3>Fickell has strong recruiting ties in the state; he's been able to learn from one of the best head coaches of all time in Meyer and most importantly for Bearcat fans, he's loyal. Though his head coaching sample size is small, he did well leading the Buckeyes through a tumultuous year. The short-term benefit is high, but the long-term effects can be riskier if he leaves early.Grade: C+<h3>Butch Davis, FIU</h3>Davis returns to Miami to take over a program that has had four consecutive losing seasons. He has the vision, the talent, and the name recognition to transform the Panthers into a conference championship team.Grade: B<h3>Ed Orgeron, LSU</h3>Orgeron led the Tigers to a 5-2 record after taking over for Les Miles. He did a great job leading the resurgence of the Tigers' offense and his hiring of Matt Canada as LSU's new offensive coordinator shows his emphasis on making its offense one of the country's best. He’s a Louisiana native; he's learned from his rough stint as coach at <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///ncaaf/teams/425" href="http://www.thescore.com/ncaaf/teams/425">Ole Miss</a> and he has the passion for leading the Tigers back to SEC prominence.Grade: B+<h3>Charlie Strong, USF</h3><figure class="article-segment--image"><img src="https://assets-cms.thescore.com/uploads/image/file/130946/cropped_GettyImages-459669778.jpg?ts=1442720380"><figcaption></figcaption></figure>Strong has many recruiting ties in the state; he has a track record of helping to develop NFL caliber talent at Louisville and he knows how to build a championship culture. Luckily, they might have found the guy to give them a needed change. Brohm is an offensive mastermind who learned his craft under Bobby Petrino. He led a dynamic Western Kentucky offense that was seventh nationally by averaging 517 yards a game. He's more than capable of transforming Purdue from hapless to competitive.Grade: A

Since Florida Atlantic doesn’t have a foundation of recent success, Kiffin has the opportunity to put his imprint on the program by instilling his principles and vision.For a coach looking for a challenge and a way to prove himself, this is a unique opportunity. The program is newer, as the Owls didn’t have a football team until 2001. Since then, and especially as of late, it’s been more "Charlie Brown trying to kick the football" moments for the program, which in some regards draws parallels to Kiffin’s career.After all, Kiffin had it all going for him. He coached the <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nfl/teams/7" href="http://www.thescore.com/nfl/teams/7">Oakland Raiders</a> at 32, then moved on to head coaching stints at <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///ncaaf/teams/630" href="http://www.thescore.com/ncaaf/teams/630">Tennessee</a> before ditching them after one season to go back to <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///ncaaf/teams/676" href="http://www.thescore.com/ncaaf/teams/676">USC</a> where he was fired in 2013. He arrived in Tuscaloosa knowing he needed to prove himself. Therefore, after rejuvenating the Crimson Tide offense over the past three seasons, this move seems unusual to some.At the same time, it wasn’t as if he didn’t try to land positions elsewhere. He interviewed with <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///ncaaf/teams/290" href="http://www.thescore.com/ncaaf/teams/290">Houston</a>, but the administration tabbed offensive coordinator Major Applewhite to take over the head coaching duties instead. In the past, Kiffin was rumored for the <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///ncaaf/teams/388" href="http://www.thescore.com/ncaaf/teams/388">Maryland</a> job, but he didn’t receive the offer there either.Therefore, it’s easy for some to come to the conclusion this is all there is for Kiffin. That he must start at the bottom and prove himself again. In many ways, this sets up a redemption story for him, if he can build the program.However, that won’t be easy. Even though he'll take over a struggling program and his name recognition should help attract talent, he'll have plenty of competition particularly in acquiring in-state recruits. He'll be going against the likes of Charlie Strong, who just took over at <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///ncaaf/teams/577" href="http://www.thescore.com/ncaaf/teams/577">USF</a>. Then, there’s Butch Davis at <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///ncaaf/teams/236" href="http://www.thescore.com/ncaaf/teams/236">FIU</a> and Scott Frost at <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///ncaaf/teams/663" href="http://www.thescore.com/ncaaf/teams/663">UCF</a>.Of course, there are elite teams like <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///ncaaf/teams/507" href="http://www.thescore.com/ncaaf/teams/507">Ohio State</a>, Alabama, and <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///ncaaf/teams/158" href="http://www.thescore.com/ncaaf/teams/158">Clemson</a> who all come to the state to attract talent. The chances of him landing another head coaching job in the foreseeable future will be in jeopardy. While it’s unlikely it would hurt him receiving another offensive coordinator stint at a big school given his success at Alabama, it’s clear Kiffin wants to run a program.Therefore, he weighed his opportunities and now has the chance to turn around a program that's struggling to find its identity. It’s a risky gamble that could result in his last head coaching opportunity. At the same time, if he's able to have success there, it could lead to him becoming one of the bigger coaching commodities, bringing him back to where his career was heading six years ago.

Instead, the Trojans regrouped, made key changes and now are the best team in the Pac-12.On Saturday, USC came full circle from the beginning of the season by beating Washington 26-13. In doing so, it illustrated its growth in key areas. <div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div>The biggest of which has been the Trojans' defense. This was a unit that gave up 465 total yards to <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///ncaaf/teams/40" href="http://www.thescore.com/ncaaf/teams/40">Alabama</a>. Against the Huskies' potent offensive attack, USC's defense dominated the line of scrimmage. Washington headed into the contest averaging at least 200 rushing yards a game, but the Trojans held them to 17.This was all-around domination by one of the most improved defenses in the country.However, this is just one part of the Trojans' development. The other comes from the offense and freshman quarterback <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///ncaaf/players/98048" href="http://www.thescore.com/ncaaf/players/98048">Sam Darnold</a>.Darnold took over as the starter against <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///ncaaf/teams/677" href="http://www.thescore.com/ncaaf/teams/677">Utah</a>, and since then, USC has gone 6-1, with that first start his only loss. Darnold belies his experience by delivering consistently. He is completing 68 percent of his passes and has 22 touchdown passes. Most importantly, he has only thrown six interceptions, illustrating his great decision-making abilities.This stunning reversal is a testament to Clay Helton and his staff's ability to keep their players focused when things were not going well.Meanwhile, Washington is in deep trouble. Though this was its first loss of the season, it couldn't have come at a worse time. The Huskies played the fourth easiest schedule to this point, according to <a href="http://www.espn.com/college-football/statistics/teamratings">FPI</a>. Therefore, an easy schedule combined with playing an upstart USC squad led to a perfect storm. But it also raises the question: Since this is arguably the Huskies' toughest challenge to this point, how legit are they?The Huskies still control their destiny as it concerns the Pac-12 North division race. The Huskies must win out, including the conference title game, to have a chance to play in the College Football Playoff.This weekend was chaotic with three of the top four teams losing. What shouldn't be lost in the undercurrent is the fact USC is playing some of the best football in the country right now. It’s safe to say nobody in East Lansing expected <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///ncaaf/teams/408" href="http://www.thescore.com/ncaaf/teams/408">Michigan State</a> to take such a large step back this year.While the Spartans lost a bevy of talent in the offseason, Mark Dantonio and his staff are usually adept at earning the most from their players.This year is different, though. Nothing has seemed to work, and Michigan State has lost seven games in a row - its longest losing streak since 1982, <a href="http://www.espn.com/espn/now?nowId=21-0586642481060255699-4">according to ESPN Stats and Information</a>.<div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div>What makes this plunge even more confounding is the Spartans going 0-6 in conference play. The best example of their struggles came in a 31-27 loss to <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///ncaaf/teams/298" href="http://www.thescore.com/ncaaf/teams/298">Illinois</a> on Saturday.In that game, the Spartans’ defense did an excellent job containing Illinois’ offense throughout most of the first half, holding it to just 26 total yards and no first downs. However, right before halftime, Illinois sustained an 11-play, 73-yard drive and took the lead on <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///ncaaf/players/74142" href="http://www.thescore.com/ncaaf/players/74142">Kendrick Foster</a>’s 19-yard touchdown run.Limiting big plays continues to be a problem for Michigan State’s defense. Judging by their recent performances, it’s possible the Spartans win just three games this season after making the College Football Playoff last year.No matter its final win total - which at most will peak at five - this is a stunning reversal for a team that's been so consistent.If there's a bright side, it’s that Michigan State has not given up. After losing to <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///ncaaf/teams/107" href="http://www.thescore.com/ncaaf/teams/107">BYU</a>, <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///ncaaf/teams/493" href="http://www.thescore.com/ncaaf/teams/493">Northwestern</a>, and <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///ncaaf/teams/388" href="http://www.thescore.com/ncaaf/teams/388">Maryland</a> by double-digit deficits, the Spartans played well against <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///ncaaf/teams/407" href="http://www.thescore.com/ncaaf/teams/407">Michigan</a>, holding the Wolverines to 32 points - two touchdowns below their season average. And at times against Illinois, the Spartans showed great poise on offense, orchestrating a six-play, 52-yard, fourth-quarter drive to take the lead. That's progress.However, some of Michigan State's weaknesses, such as poor red zone offense, are difficult to overcome, especially against better competition. Therefore, it will be interesting to see how Dantonio and his staff handle the rest of the season, and how the players respond.If the last few weeks are any indication, it's that regardless of results, the Spartans will keep fighting. While that spirit won’t be reflected this season, the growing pains will prepare them for the future.This isn’t the same Spartans team the Big Ten is used to seeing, but don’t expect them to stay down for too long, either.

The junior ball carrier had just come off an amazing season in which he gained the most rushing yards of any Volunteers sophomore with 1,288.Entering this season, Hurd made some interesting comments during fall camp when reporters asked him if he wanted to run more from the Deep-I formation.<div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div>“Yeah, I mentioned that to them, and we ran some in the bowl game,” he said. Hurd finished that contest with 130 rushing yards and one touchdown as Tennessee destroyed <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///ncaaf/teams/493" href="http://www.thescore.com/ncaaf/teams/493">Northwestern</a> 45-6.In past comments which seem to echo more now given his stunning announcement, Hurd offered an explanation as to why he prefers the I-formation.“You definitely have a better vision of the field in some cases,” Hurd remarked to reporters. Though, he did also mention to the press he could run from any formation.Hurd was in dominant form to start the season, running for 110 yards and one score in Tennessee’s opener against <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///ncaaf/teams/56" href="http://www.thescore.com/ncaaf/teams/56">Appalachian State</a>. Few, if any of the Volunteer faithful expected this to be his last game rushing for 100 yards or more.Since that time, his production and touches have dropped. He had just 10 carries against <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///ncaaf/teams/255" href="http://www.thescore.com/ncaaf/teams/255">Georgia</a> and eight rushing attempts in the <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///ncaaf/teams/573" href="http://www.thescore.com/ncaaf/teams/573">South Carolina</a> game. While rumors swirled about possible injuries and fights with the coaching staff, it became clear Hurd wasn’t going to fit into Tennessee’s future plans.When Hurd announced his decision to transfer he didn’t specify a reason. However, Knoxville radio station WNML announced the reason he opted to transfer was due to a desire to play tight end or wide receiver.If this is indeed the case, it illustrates a new vision for his future.At 6-foot-4, Hurd has the size to play both positions and possesses the athletic prowess to excel wherever he lines up on the field. He wouldn’t be the first person to try this change either.<a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nfl/players/51108" href="http://www.thescore.com/nfl/players/51108">Braxton Miller</a> made things easier for Urban Meyer and <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///ncaaf/teams/507" href="http://www.thescore.com/ncaaf/teams/507">Ohio State</a>’s coaching staff last season when he made the move from quarterback to H-Back due in part to an ailing shoulder that wasn’t going to heal quick enough to play quarterback. Out of the gate, his transition seemed a success, as he had a highlight reel of a game against <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///ncaaf/teams/689" href="http://www.thescore.com/ncaaf/teams/689">Virginia Tech</a>. Though he didn’t have a huge season from a production angle, he made enough of an impact from an athletic and character standpoint for the <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///nfl/teams/13" href="http://www.thescore.com/nfl/teams/13">Houston Texans</a> to draft him with the 85th pick.If Hurd is trying to replicate this same type of transition to garner attention from NFL teams, he’s going about it the wrong way.Miller stayed with the Buckeyes in his last season, he didn’t abandon his team like Hurd did. While head coach Butch Jones supports Hurd on his move, it’s important to consider the situation from the standpoint of those at his next stops. What will his new teammates think about him? More importantly, if he is lucky enough to become a draft prospect, how will NFL teams analyze his decision to jump ship?Players shift positions all the time to create better opportunities for themselves and their teams. While Hurd saw the writing on the wall and how he was unlikely to fit into Tennessee’s offense - at least this season - he took the wrong approach. Instead of staying with the team, working it out, and possibly even changing positions, he left in puzzling fashion.For a player with his promise and athletic pedigree, change can be good if he finds the right fit. Along the way, though, he will invite questions he never thought he would have to answer.

Following a puzzling 24-21 loss to <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///ncaaf/teams/521" href="http://www.thescore.com/ncaaf/teams/521">Penn State</a>, Ohio State’s offense struggled to find its rhythm consistently against a feisty <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///ncaaf/teams/493" href="http://www.thescore.com/ncaaf/teams/493">Northwestern </a>defense. Favored by 26 points, the scarlet and gray’s offensive inconsistency made this game much closer than most thought it would be, as Ohio State won 24-20.Both games illustrated the Buckeyes’ offensive struggles.<div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><h3>Offensive-line concerns</h3>The problems begin up front, as Ohio State’s offensive line is still developing cohesion. A great illustration of the unit’s struggles is the Penn State game. The Nittany Lions unleashed a relentless pass rush, where they pressured<a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///ncaaf/players/71818" href="http://www.thescore.com/ncaaf/players/71818"> J.T. Barrett</a> 26 times in 51 dropbacks. Because the offensive line has been unable to provide adequate protection constantly, the Buckeyes’ passing game has struggled to find the tempo it needs.Keeping defenders out of Ohio State’s backfield has been a recurring problem for its offensive line. Entering the Northwestern game, the Buckeyes were fifth in the country in tackles for a loss allowed, averaging 3.86 per game.<h3>Lack of receiver depth</h3>Blocking isn’t the only area hindering Ohio State. The Buckeyes have failed to develop wide-receiver depth the past two seasons. While the trio of backs in <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///ncaaf/players/82871" href="http://www.thescore.com/ncaaf/players/82871">Curtis Samuel</a>, <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///ncaaf/players/97660" href="http://www.thescore.com/ncaaf/players/97660">Mike Weber</a>, and <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///ncaaf/players/71843" href="http://www.thescore.com/ncaaf/players/71843">Dontre Wilson</a> have provided Barrett with other targets, the failure of the receivers as a whole to generate separation from defenders has been a big problem.<h3>Play-calling</h3>The other issue concerns play-calling. Ohio State’s offensive staff has fallen into a predictable pattern, as evidenced by the Penn State game. On first-down plays against the Nittany Lions, the Buckeyes ran the ball 12 of 14 times. This made it easy for Penn State to defend because it knew what was coming.Conversely, the Buckeyes flipped the script against Northwestern during their opening drive, calling two passing plays initially. This opened up the running game, leading to a 14-yard scamper for Weber. It kept the Wildcats’ defense guessing, allowing Ohio State’s offense to march down the field for the game’s first touchdown. This progression shows the coaching staff is able to make adjustments.As the game progressed, though, the Buckeyes struggled to maintain that momentum. During the midway stretch of the game, Ohio State punted on five consecutive drives. While Northwestern’s defense deserves the lion's share of the credit for holding the Buckeyes in check, Ohio State wasn’t able to generate consistent push up front, receivers dropped passes, and Barrett missed open targets.This is par for the course for a young team.However, what was promising for Buckeye faithful was the way this unit ended the game. Tied at 17 apiece, Ohio State orchestrated a beautiful, six-play, 63-yard drive that culminated in Samuel’s touchdown run. This drive not only gave the Buckeyes the lead, it displayed their mental toughness on a day when things were not going their way.This unit might be flawed and inconsistent, but it's also battle-tested. The Buckeyes are growing through these pains, and as that growth comes, so should consistency. Ohio State’s offense is far from a finished product - at times it’s hard to watch - but by fighting its way back against a good Northwestern defense, it showed resiliency.This success inspires confidence, something this unit needs more than anything.

That alone should have sounded warning signals that perhaps coach Gus Malzahn was overthinking things. Not surprisingly, Auburn couldn’t generate much offensive momentum, losing 19-13.<div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div>Then, two games later, the Tigers couldn’t take advantage of their strong defensive performance in a 29-16 loss to <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///ncaaf/teams/635" href="http://www.thescore.com/ncaaf/teams/635">Texas A&amp;M</a>. Rumors surfaced that Malzahn might not be the coach at the end of the season due to the Tigers losing 10 of their last 12 SEC games.However, what was lost in the undercurrent of coaching rumors and second-guessing was a sense of progression. Auburn’s run game came alive during this difficult moment. First, it ran for 462 yards in a win over <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///ncaaf/teams/60" href="http://www.thescore.com/ncaaf/teams/60">Arkansas State</a>, then the Tigers gashed Texas A&amp;M’s stout defensive line for 236 yards on the ground. The foundation was being built, but some ignored it because the scoreboard reflected different results.To help the team move in a different direction, Malzahn didn’t call plays against <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///ncaaf/teams/370" href="http://www.thescore.com/ncaaf/teams/370">LSU</a>.
