<p>Chicago Cubs left-hander <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///mlb/players/10586" href="https://thescore.com/mlb/players/10586">Justin Steele</a> will undergo season-ending surgery to repair his left elbow, Cubs manager Craig Counsell announced Sunday, according to <a href="https://x.com/PJ_Mooney/status/1911518071657046028">Patrick Mooney of The Athletic</a>.</p><p>Steele's procedure is going to be reconstructive, but it's not yet clear if it will be full Tommy John or primary repair, per <a href="https://x.com/JeffPassan/status/1911519922091704496">Jeff Passan of ESPN</a>.</p><p>The 2023 All-Star was placed on the 15-day injured list Wednesday with what the Cubs called elbow tendonitis at the time. </p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>However, the team said Friday that Steele was seeking other opinions because he's already dealt with the same injury three times.</p><p>The 29-year-old owns a 4.76 ERA with 1.15 WHIP and 21 strikeouts over 22 2/3 innings (four starts) this season. He's authored a 3.30 ERA with 9.2 K/9 across five years with Chicago.</p>

The four-time All-Star reportedly rejected a seven-year, $158-million extension in June 2023.</p><p>The 30-year-old could be the top first baseman available if he builds on a great start to 2025, as he's slashing .314/.429/.657 with three homers and 11 RBIs over 10 games.</p><p>Alonso added that while he's not opposed to having contract talks during the season, his primary focus is helping New York on the field.</p><p>"Obviously, if something happens, then I am sure Scott (Boras) and Steve (Cohen) or David (Stearns) will talk about it, but my job is to focus and lock in on the season, and win," Alonso said.</p>

The pact also includes a $2-million signing bonus and $4-million buyout.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>The base salaries from 2031-2034 can also increase due to performance escalators, reports Cotillo, who adds that Campbell can earn as much as an extra $2 million per season during those years for winning MVP.</p><p>The 22-year-old has gone 6-for-16 with a homer and four walks over the first five games of his career this season after making the Red Sox following a stellar spring camp. He slashed .330/.439/.558 with 20 long balls, 77 RBIs, and 24 stolen bases across 115 contests over three minor-league levels in 2024.</p><p>Campbell is the No. 6 prospect in all of baseball, according to <a href="https://www.mlb.com/milb/prospects">MLB Pipeline</a>.</p><p>The Red Sox selected Campbell as a compensation pick in the fourth round of the 2023 draft. <p>The Milwaukee Brewers placed right-hander <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///mlb/players/9543" href="https://thescore.com/mlb/players/9543">Aaron Civale</a> on the 15-day injured list with a strained left hamstring, the club announced Monday.</p><p>Civale surrendered five earned runs on four hits (three homers) with one strikeout and one walk over three innings in his first start Sunday in a loss to the New York Yankees.</p><p>The 29-year-old's injury is the latest for the Brewers' depleted rotation. <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///mlb/players/12432" href="https://thescore.com/mlb/players/12432">Aaron Ashby</a>, <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///mlb/players/15561" href="https://thescore.com/mlb/players/15561">Robert Gasser,</a> <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///mlb/players/12262" href="https://thescore.com/mlb/players/12262">DL Hall</a>, <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///mlb/players/13648" href="https://thescore.com/mlb/players/13648">Tobias Myers</a>, and <a data-in-app-uri="thescore:///mlb/players/8683" href="https://thescore.com/mlb/players/8683">Brandon Woodruff</a> are also sidelined.</p><div class="the-score-article-ad-unit"></div><p>New York hit an MLB record-tying 15 long balls over the first three games of the season, outscoring Milwaukee 36-14 in the series sweep.</p><p>Right-hander Grant Anderson was recalled from Triple-A to take Civale's spot on the active roster.</p>
