Texas Tech icon Emmett shot and killed at 37
Andre Emmett, who starred for Bob Knight's Texas Tech teams from 2000-04, died in Dallas on Monday, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram's Stefan Stevenson.
Emmett, 37, was approached by two unknown suspects while sitting in his vehicle outside his home early Monday morning, according to the Dallas Police Department. He was shot while running away from the aggressors after an altercation and later died in hospital.
A three-time All-Big 12 selection and a consensus first-team All-American in 2003-04, the 6-foot-5 guard averaged 20.4 points and 6.6 rebounds per game over his final three collegiate seasons after being promoted to the Red Raiders' starting lineup as a sophomore. He finished his college career as Texas Tech's all-time leading scorer with 2,256 points.
Emmett was enshrined in the Texas Tech Hall of Fame as a member of the 2018 class and inducted into the basketball program's Ring of Honor earlier this year.
Thank you for the competitor you were on the court and the incredible person you were off of it.

After starring in Lubbock, Emmett was selected with the No. 35 pick of the 2004 NBA Draft, landing with the Memphis Grizzlies in a draft-day trade with the Seattle SuperSonics. He made 14 career NBA appearances in stints with the Grizzlies and New Jersey Nets but mostly plied his trade overseas and in the NBA's developmental circuit. He was twice selected as a D-League All-Star.
Most recently, Emmett emerged as a standout performer in the BIG3 league. Playing for 3's Company during the 2019 season, he finished second only to league MVP Joe Johnson in total scoring.
The BIG3 is in a state of shock over the sudden and tragic death of Andre Emmett. Andre was a member of the BIG3 family for two seasons and never without a smile on his face. His kindness towards others and easy-going demeanor made him a joy to be around. pic.twitter.com/QoNJ7NH2k0
