Ali, Foreman documentary 'When We Were Kings' to be turned into musical
The "Rumble in the Jungle" is getting the musical treatment.
Producer David Sonenberg announced Thursday he's developing a musical version of "When We Were Kings," the 1996 Academy Award-winning documentary about Muhammad Ali's historic bout against then-undefeated world heavyweight champion George Foreman in Zaire, Africa in 1974.
"Muhammad Ali was called 'The Greatest of All Time' for good reason," Sonenberg said in a statement, according to David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter. "Ali went toe to toe with everyone from Sonny Liston and Joe Frazier to Howard Cosell, Norman Mailer and the Supreme Court of the United States.
"Ali remains an indisputable cultural icon. Not only was he an extraordinarily gifted athlete, poet, spiritual and political leader, he was certainly one of the most charming, disarming, controversial and electrifying personalities of all time."
In addition to Ali and Foreman, the musical will include depictions of promoter Don King, civil rights organizer Stokely Carmichael, author Norman Mailer, former military dictator and Democratic Republic of the Congo president Mobutu Sese Seko, and more.
The musical score will feature R&B classics performed at the Zaire music festival organized to promote the fight, as well as the Fugees song "Rumble in the Jungle," which was recorded for the "When We Were Kings" soundtrack.
